About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Thumping Bass – June 26th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 26, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

Hot is the word for today. I wanted to get an earlier start to get back before the hottest part of the day. I left at 9:50 and finished at 12:32. It was still a hot 95.4 degrees as I pulled into the driveway. Scattered clouds did not blot out the sun much nor did the S 8 mph breeze provide much relief. With all of this sun I wore a long sleeve jersey to protect me from the sun. I used to think long sleeves were only for the cool ride days but it does help keep me cool in the heat too.

My route took me north to New Caney before turning south on the US59 service road and then through Valley Ranch. One of the things I look forward to during my rides is to stop at a store and drink a Diet Pepsi. Sometimes I adjust my route to go by a store that serves Diet Pepsi. Today I stopped at the Stripes store on FM1314 at Valley Ranch Drive. I bought my drink and settled down outside with the light breeze occasionally blowing over me. The atmosphere soon deteriorated when a pickup truck pulled in on the opposite end of the parking slots in front of the store with the “music” loudly blaring from their speakers. I probably could have survived that but over the 15 to 20 minutes I was there the same bass and drums looped over and over. To cap it off about half way through my time there the driver moved closer to me so that I could absorb more of the thumping bass. I decided to leave sooner than I normally would and as I moved my bike out to leave the passenger came out of the store and the driver turned the music off and went inside. All the time he was running the engine too which was not the quietest exhaust either. At least the truck exhaust was not smelly.

I rode 32.13 miles today at a 15.4 mph average speed. Traffic during the morning was light over the route. No surprises or changes in the roads. Schools are closed but a couple of New Caney ISD elementary schools are being expanded with additions for the coming school year. Several subdivisions are building new homes at rapid clip.

The June goal of 524 miles is in my rear view mirror as I biked 762.72 miles in June. With 4 potential riding days left I should get to 800 plus miles. The three riding days this week covered 104.3 miles and 3202 miles for the year to date.

Weather forecasts show hot for the rest of the week with Saturday possibly going to 102. As I write this they lowered Saturday to 100 and Friday up to 100. Sunday cools off to 99.

Issues with my New Commuter Bicycle: Novara Transfer from REI
Bicycling for the Heck of It!
San Antonio Couple’s Bicycle Blog

I really wish this post could be different, but it is what it is… about 8 months ago Tina and I took off on the Leon Creek Greenway on our Sun Cruz 3 speed coaster brake bikes. It was scary at times. The rear hub is the only brake on the bike, and it  would scream in protest as I tried to control my speed down hills. I weighed too much for only relying on a coaster brake. My Sun has been a great bike, but I believe I’m starting to outgrow it  the more I cycle. It was my bicycle of choice this time last year on trip to the twin cities, Madison WI, and Ohio. If you are a…

TI sees benefits in encouraging bicycle commuting
By SHERYL JEAN, Staff Writer        www.dallasnews.com

Dave Parks doesn’t mind his daily commute to work.

He passes through quiet neighborhoods and travels along a creek, under a canopy of trees and by patches of wildflowers to Texas Instruments Inc. in North Dallas — on a bicycle.

TI is one of the few large companies in car-centric Dallas — and across the state — that make it easy for employees to bike to work. It estimates that hundreds of its employees ride rather than drive.

It wasn’t always that way. …

Nepal to Texas – June 25th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 25, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

Another route that I do not ride regularly today. I added a leg to the Huffman route going east on FM1960 to the Liberty County line. The reason I turned there is the road surface in Liberty County is the rough chip n seal. Once upon a time FM1960 was smooth all the way to Dayton but TxDot fixed that several years ago. When I stopped at my favorite Huffman Chevron I just refilled my water bottle for the ride east to the county line. There are no stores until I get back on FM1960. Biking on Smith Road from FM2100 I bypassed the Huffman Chevron so I stopped at the Exxon on FM1960 and East Lake Houston Parkway. I had not stopped at this station since they tore down the original building and built a new one behind it. Not sure why I avoided it but maybe because it was closer to home when I go this route.

While I was at the Exxon station I talked with one of the clerks who was taking his break outside. He was Nepal and we talked about my bike and where he lived before coming to Texas. He said while he lived in Colorado he did not have a car so he rode a bike to get around. After there he moved to Minnesota. Minnesota was too cold for him so he moved to Texas. Surprisingly he said the Houston winter was not too different from where he lived in Nepal. We had a nice conversation.

The weather this week is supposed to be hot. I left home at 10:37 and it was already 89 degrees and I finished at 1:34 with 93.6 degrees. The humidity went from 58% to 44% which I welcomed. For some reason I wore wrist bands today and they soaked up a lot of perspiration. A short sleeve jersey, shorts and sunscreen completed my wardrobe. When I stopped at the Exxon station sitting in the shade felt good as the 10 mph SW breeze moved across my clothes. After I got home I watched the temperature go up to 97 degrees.

Today’s route was 37.23 miles. I averaged 15.6 mph. So far I biked 730.59 miles in June on 22 riding days. 800 miles for the month looks possible. 3170 miles for the year over 101 riding days. Already this week totals 72.17 miles. Tomorrow’s weather should be a repeat of today.

Helmet event aimed at getting proper fit
By CALEB MCCAIG        www.yourstephenvilletx.com
Remember the first time your parents helped you ride a bike? More than likely they made sure you had a helmet on whether it was the right fit or not. Safety seems to be one thing everyone is willing to improve. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, in 2011 there were a total of 677 deaths of bicyclists. The 14 and younger age group accounted for 9 percent of those deaths.

If you have a child who bicycle, then head over to Tarleton’s Wisdom Gym July 5 to attend the bicycle helmet giveaway. The Texas Medical Association Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield, local physicians and…

Action Alert: Contact TxDOT to Prevent a Bike Ban
BikeTexas.org
SH 130, a toll road with wide shoulders and low traffic volumesLast month, The Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) added a last-minute item to their May meeting agenda to propose banning cyclists from all TxDOT-controlled toll roads. Fortunately, we heard about the agenda item in time to attend the meeting and testify against such a ban. The TTC pulled the item from the agenda for more study. (Read more about the May TTC meeting and our response here.)

TxDOT has alerted us that the proposed ban is back on the agenda for the June 27 meeting. We feel that the TTC has not studied this issue enough to have the item back on the…

Rotary Riders
BY MIKE SACKETT Daily Light Correspondent        www.waxahachietx.com
More than 1,300 bike riders lined up on the start line for the 27th annual Rotary Club Cow Creek Country Classic bike ride Saturday morning. Riders from as far away as Houston joined local riders for the ride that included a 102-mile route.

“This year, we decided to start the ride off heading west on Indian Drive instead of the eastern direction we have in the past,” Rotarian Melissa Ballard said.

The change was due to safety issues with riders crossing U.S. Highway 77 and the Interstate Highway 35 E exit ramps heading west along the…
