About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for June 17th

Houston: Tanner Road to Addicks Dam Trail: Need to contact frequent users
by flangehead        www.bikeforums.net
I am working with a group to re-establish the connection between Tanner Road (about 1/2 way between North Eldridge Parkway and Brittmoore) and the Addicks Dam. We are identifying users or potential users of the trail to show local support for the project. This would be of particular interest to cyclists and hikers in the subdivisions Lakes on Eldridge, Lakes on Eldridge North, Twin Lakes, Eldridge Park, and Villages at Lakepointe as well as the business parks Brittmoore Park and Brittmoore-Tanner.

This connection, which will require about 1000′ of trail, will provide access to the concrete top of spillway south to Clay Road, then the gravel top-of-dam road to…

Veterans Romney and Manning Ride with President George W. Bush
Veterans Omar Romney and Michael Manning rode with former President George W. Bush during the third annual Warrior 100K Ride in Texas May 23-25.
www.prweb.com
Army Staff Sergeant Omar Romney was impressed. As one of 15 participants in the George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Warrior 100K Ride May 23-25, he had the opportunity to not only meet the former president, but also ride with him.

“The President says this is not a race but he sure likes to go fast,” Romney recalled, noting that Bush fondly called him “his wing man.”

Injured during deployment to Iraq in 2003, Romney was sent to Fort Campbell in Kentucky for rehabilitation. Medically retired from the…

Groundbreaking Tuesday on Mockingbird Pedestrian Bridge at Katy Trail
www.dallasnews.com        By JOE SIMNAC
Years of planning, negotiation and problem solving will culminate Tuesday in a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction this fall of the Mockingbird Pedestrian Bridge at Katy Trail.

“This is kind of the big critical piece that connects the existing Katy Trail,” said Jared White, a Dallas transportation planner. “This is how we can get across Mockingbird and get everybody out to the northeast Dallas White Rock Lake area.”

The $7 million construction project is the last phase of the popular Katy Trail, which now runs 3.5 miles from American Airlines Center downtown to near the…

Gravel, fsr, smooth dirt, etc in central TX
by mack_turtle        forums.mtbr.com/texas
I have a sscx bike that is mostly used on the road and i would like to put some knobbies on it and grind some gravel. Where can i set out on a long stretch of dirt that is smooth enough for a non-mtb but not too brutal for this bike? I might even take it on relatively smooth songletrack. …(replies)

Running in a Sprinkler – June 17th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 17, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 18, 2017

Today’s ride brought back memories from 60 years ago when I saw some young children playing in a sprinkler in the driveway. I can remember when I was that age and running through the sprinkler to keep cool. Back where I grew up the summer temperature usually did not reach the level in the Houston area but I didn’t know any better and thought it was hot. When I got back home the temperature was 95.5 degrees under a partly cloudy sky and a 8 mph SW breeze.

To get the week of to a good start I went on the Eagle Springs – Walden – Huffman route of 34.52 miles averaging 15.5 mph. I saw the children in the sprinkler on Timber View Drive as I headed to FM1960 to ride over Lake Houston to Huffman. I noticed that the street sweeper made a pass on the east bound shoulder over Lake Houston to clean up the dead bug piles and other debris. When I got to the Cedar Landing restaurant entrance the sweeper idled there waiting to head to the next job. I did see another bicyclist at the corner of Will Clayton Parkway and Timber Forest Drive. I wanted to wave but I was accelerating through the intersection and could not take my hands off the handlebar.

The march to my June goal of 524 miles is well on its way with my miles totaling 500 and year to date standing at 2940 miles.

Tomorrow looks like another great bicycling day weather wise repeating today’s weather plus a 20% chance of rain.

Hit the Trails – June 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 31, 2017

After yesterday’s ride I thought I would take today as a rest day but then I remembered I had rode my mountain bike in a while and this would be a good variation for Father’s Day. Riding my road bike I have a set group of routes but deciding on the route for today I had to use my brain and think up what route to take. I wanted to go 15 miles or more and ride on some dirt. It has been a week since our last rain so I figured the dirt would be dry and hard. There were a few low places with mud  but no water to avoid. I stopped to take some pictures along the way.

[wppa type=”slideonlyf” album=”167″][/wppa]

I hit today’s mileage goal riding 17.33 miles. Plenty of grass and shade kept me cooler than I thought I would be even though it was 95 degrees; not too much hot pavement to push heat up to me. I did drink one and half water bottles during the ride. I stopped at the Subway on Mills Branch Drive to get a refill. With today’s ride I have biked 14 of the 16 days, rode 465.51 miles in June, 212.86 miles this week and 2905 miles year to date.

The partly cloudy and light breeze made today a perfect one to ride in the shade of the trees along the trails. tomorrow should repeat today and I expect to ride.
