About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Iceman Cometh – June 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 22, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 18, 2017

I rode the route I planned going to Huffman, Crosby and Summerwood then back home to Kingwood. The roads were generally in good condition. As I biked through the Kings River Village in Kingwood I started seeing other bicyclists returning from their ride. By the time I turned south on FM2100 from Old Atascocita Road I saw 30 to 40 bicyclists. They headed home when I passed the 13.5 mile point and biked on to Crosby.

Most of the time when I ride this route I go east of FM2100 and ride around some of the grass farms but today I rode south on FM2100 to Crosby. As I approached the railroad track crossing I turned left off FM2100 because of the railroad overpass construction. Based on my past rides I knew which way to ride to get around the work zone. I stopped at the Raceway station in Crosby to refill my water bottle knowing the lack of places until I got to Summerwood.

Being Saturday I thought Deussen Park would be crowded but there were not that many people. A couple of the pavilions housed some groups and I did see some other bicyclists. The park has a large dog walk and play area and numerous dogs and owners were walking around. I saw one person hosing down two large dogs for coolness or baths maybe.

Overall today’s route was 48.36 miles, a little longer than I guessed. If I had added the roads east of FM2100 I think it would have been around 53 miles. Now June miles total 641.86, this week’s miles are 176.35 and year to date I biked 3081 miles.

The weather forecast said the temperature would be lower today but I think they missed this one. It was 81 when I left home at 8:53 and 93.7 when I finished at 12:48. Partly cloudy sky and a SSE 6.8 mph breeze completed the scene. I continued the long sleeve jersey thing by wearing a blue one today. I figured with the longer ride the sunscreen would be sweated off and the jersey would not. I did take a sweat break at the Raceway in Crosby to dry my bandana and I stopped at the Shell station on W. Lake Houston Parkway in Summerwood for a Diet Coke and granola bars. At this the Shell station the iceman was delivering bags of ice. They must have unloaded 200 bags or more. Being a hot weekend calls for lots of ice and the Shell station should be ready.

Tomorrow heats up again with the high of 97. I plan on riding after church in the mid-day heat.

From the mag: Charity rides lead the pack
by Doug McClellan        www.bicycleretailer.com
RYE, NY (BRAIN) — While the biggest charity “thons” were flat or slightly down in 2012, most dedicated to cycling saw healthy increases.

“When we look at the results, the really strong results are in the cycling area,” said David Hessekiel, president of the Cause Marketing Forum. The forum publishes the annual Run Walk Ride 30, which tracks the top 30 charity athletic fundraisers.

Pelotonia was the fastest-growing big program in America on a percentage basis. It raised $16.9 million in 2012, up nearly 29 percent from the prior year, a rate Hessekiel said…

Cycling lanes planned for Toll 49
By Laura Sadler        www.kltv.com
KLTV.com-Tyler, Longview, Jacksonville, Texas | ETX News
TYLER, TX (KLTV) – Friday morning, the Tyler Biking Club met with toll road officials to discuss plans on creating a bike lane on Toll Road 49.

The lane would travel beside vehicles on the toll road, off on the right hand shoulder of the road.  Tyler Simpson, a member of the Tyler Biking Club, believes the toll road is ideal and safe.

“It has a good shoulder, limited access, it has limited entrances and exits,” said Simpson.

The new cycling lane will cost the Tyler Biking Club $60,000, which has all been collected by…

Dam Loop, Dirt Remedy and Feeling Sluggish
by TC        www.turnincranks.com

On Father’s Day, I snuck out in the wee hours of the morning and did my first ever ‘Dam Loop’, a 42 mile loop around the Lake Austin. It’s a pretty popular route for the roadies and I had been wanting to try it out, but just hadn’t taken the time. Typically when I have 3 hours to ride, I’ll go hit some good dirt somewhere, but a neighbor talked me into a road ride this morning.

We took it pretty easy, keeping effort well below threshold. I hadn’t done a road ride like this so I wasn’t sure what to expect really. So a nice and easy ride worked out well. In the…

Friends Remember Aggie Cyclist Killed in Crash as Passionate, Joyful
By: Michael Oder        www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION A Texas A&M graduate and cyclist is being remembered tonight. Jackie Price Dunn, Class of 2002, died in what many in the cycling world are calling a freak accident Tuesday at a Velodrome in San Diego.

Dunn was knocked off her bike and the fall left her brain dead. She was kept alive at a hospital, but doctors said there would be no change.

Friends and family say Dunn was a woman of passion for Christ and people.

“College Station still had this place in her heart,” remembers Rachel Markham. Telling stories and looking at pictures of her friend Jackie, she can’t stop laughing.

The memories she has of her friend are…

Soaring on the Wind – June 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 21, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 31, 2017

I left home at 10:29 giving the weather time to warm up while I biked. After reading Dr. Mirkin’s newsletter this week about sun protection I decided to wear a red long sleeve jersey. You might think this would be hotter than a short sleeve one but I did not notice any extra heat. One reason could be since the sun did not hit my skin directly it did not get the heat. I did perspire but no more than when I wear a short sleeve jersey and it did not run down my arms like wearing a short sleeve jersey. Another thing Dr. Mirkin pointed out is that white is not the most effective color; dark colors are which is why I chose red. Scattered clouds broke up the sun and the temperature ranged 86.7 to 94.3 at the finish according to my weather station at home.

Today is the first day of summer signalling the daylight will get shorter. When I worked this was a big deal because it shortened the time I had to bike but retirement reduces the angst thank goodness.

The route I chose went north to New Caney before turning south to Valley Ranch, Briar Tree, Auburn Trails and back to Kingwood. Mileage totaled 30.81 at a 15.5 mph average speed. I did not want to ride too far because I plan on a longer ride tomorrow to Crosby and back through Summerwood.

Nothing special about today’s ride except I was watching two birds fly while I stopped at the Stripes station on FM1314. It was interesting watching them float on the wind currents. Sometimes they wobbled as they shifted or turned but not once did they flap their wings. I wondered what their purpose was: hunting for food? keeping cool? or what? Reminded me of floating in retirement.

Mileage standings after today’s ride:

  • this week I biked 127.99 miles
  • June miles total 593.5
  • Year to date is 3033 miles

Tulsa Tough Tales 2013
by Kim        bicyclesoutbackracing.net

Tulsa Tough is always a fun time, both on and off the bike. I equate the weekend to something similar to an epic war battle that meets Mardi Gras. The nights are late and the days are short, with lots of bike stuff in between. We started our weekend with the usual cats herding cats game—which teammates would carpool with whom and what time everyone would be departing. This always ends up the same; “we’ll let you know when we are one the road” phrase, along with the infamous, “Where are you guys at?” texts. We all know each other better, and should always assume we…

Safety Concerns Over City’s Bicycle Lanes

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) – There is a new emphasis on protecting people who ride bicycles around Corpus Christi. New bike lanes could be on the way.

They’re along Ocean Drive and Ennis Joslin and now work is underway to add new bike lanes on the city’s southside. The goal is to eventually connect all of them.
