About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

An Old Huffy – May 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 16, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 10, 2017

I was out the door at 11:40AM into mostly cloudy skies, 79 degrees and a supposedly light 4 mph breeze. Riding through Kingwood to US59 north I choose the longer route through Woodland Hills Villages and onto Kingwood Drive. Once I was on the US59 north bound service road I was able to make for the lost time coming out of Kingwood. The light breeze was at my back and I pushed my speed up to 22.2 mph at times. Once I reached New Caney I took FM1485 west.

On FM1485 I started to get a taste of the wind I could expect at some point when I turned back into it. On Gene Campbell Road the wind was not a problem most of the time because of the trees lining the east side of the road but every so often when I was in an open space I caught some wind. Arriving at FM1314 my timing was good with the traffic light and I did not have to wait until a car tripped the signal. I turned left onto FM1314 and almost immediately the wind slowed me down to 15 mph or less. Some of the gusts were strong enough to lower my speed to 12 mph but when the gust passed I got back up to around 15 mph.

My goal was to get to Old Sorters Road and FM1314 to take a break by 1:25  and I made it. I got a Diet Pepsi and ate two Kashi Trail Mix bars. While I was resting an older man on a Huffy was taking a break too. His bike was set up to collect aluminum cans along the roads. He had several tools with sharp points to stab the cans from a distance. He asked about my helmet mirror and we exchanged stories about 18-wheelers and the wind draft moving our bikes when they passed. When I finished we both headed for Old Sorters Road but I quickly moved away as he looked for his prey.

Later when I was eating lunch on our patio the trees were really swaying back forth from the wind.

With my longer exit route out of Kingwood than Monday’s ride along this route today I biked 36.46 miles (vs. 34.25 on Monday) at a 15.4 mph average speed. I finished at 2:30 PM  with a riding time 2:22:19. May miles now total 211.19 and year to date I am at 2304 miles.

When I got up this morning it looked like the rain might hang around from yesterday but it did not last more than a few minutes. By the time I left the streets were dry except for some low spots in the gutters. Tomorrow calls for partly cloudy sky and 88 degrees. Yesterday I did not ride because of rain until around noon, threatening skies and wet streets.

The West Texas Cycling Association is riding to honor those injured in bike accidents
By: Christian Henson        everythinglubbock.com
Lubbock doesn’t have bike lanes for cyclists in the city but Rachel Forbes of the West Texas Cycling Association says Lubbock does offer a map of an official bike route on streets with less traffic.

“One of the problems that we have is that they’re not all connected. It’s very difficult to get from one place to another if you are just using the designated lanes, or…

Tyler , TX (KETK) — Cyclists in East Texas have been raising money to continue riding on a portion of Toll 49.

They need to raise $60,000 dollars by July for proper signage and biking stripes.

Simpson said the cycling community has been…

Map Says Many Austinites Bike to Work, But Do They Feel Safe?
By Emily Donahue, KUT News and Faith Daniel and Rachel Marino

It’s no secret that Austin is a biking city. And while cities around the country are gearing up for National Bike to Work Day, riding to work is nothing new for Austinites: according to Census data, people here commute by bike four times more often than the national average.

To prove it, the city released a map breaking down bike commuting by neighborhood. But while more people are pedaling to work, cyclists don’t…

How to ride better in a bunch or group ride
www.brownwoodcycling.com
There’s a lot to remember when you’re riding in a pack of 50 or more of your closest friends on race day. When’s the next climb? How far from the front am I? Is the person in front of me a good wheel or is he or she squirrelly?

From a spectator’s point-of-view, a peloton looks like a static group of riders rolling at a high rate of speed. However, the peloton is a dynamic bit of organized chaos, and where you are within it will make or break your results at the end of the day.

1. Riding in a peloton the situation can change quickly, be prepared.

Like I said above, the peloton is a dynamic bit of organized chaos. Someone may form an…

No Hiding from the Wind – May 14th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 14, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2017

Another great biking day weather wise. No matter which direction I rode though it felt like a headwind was holding me back. There were a couple of exceptions though from FM2100 going west to the Lake Houston Causeway start. Once I was on the causeway there was no protection from the wind and I bogged down to 14 mph or so. The temperature ranged from 80 to 85 degrees and that pesky wind showed up as 2 mph from the ESE with 6 mph gusts. My legs reported a higher wind.

While I was headed east over Lake Houston there was another bicyclist going west. We exchanged waves.

My route went south and east through Eagle Springs, Walden at Lake Houston and on to Huffman before heading back to Kingwood. It has been a few weeks since I went this same route. The mileage turned out to be slightly more than yesterday coming at 34.56 miles at a 15.4 mph average speed. This increases May to 174.73 miles and year to date to 2268 miles.

Since my last ride over Lake Houston causeway on Sunday some government entity ran the street sweepers on the shoulders. The clean shoulders will probably not last long but I will be happy.

The love bugs are not as noticeable on this route compared to going north along US59. I did not miss them. There was one pickup at the Huffman Chevron that was really coated with bugs.
