About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Everything about riding in traffic I learned from my four-year-old
by Kristin Butcher        People for Bikes

The other day, I was embarking on one of my favorite activities: riding around town with my family. With my four-year-old attached to my bike on one of those newfangled trail-a-bikes, I took him straight over a small section of bumpy rocks. I assumed he’d ridden on rocks before. I’d assumed he’d enjoy bouncing up and down. I assumed he’d think riding rocks was cool.

“Mommy, that was NOT cool,” I was quickly informed.

Here I was, in the middle of a bike ride with my son, and I’d just broken one of the major tenants of cycling: I didn’t ride predictably. And though this lesson was reinforced with a few tears (his) and pangs of guilt…

Bicyclists: College Station becoming more bike-friendly
By ALLEN REED        www.theeagle.com
The College Station City Council proclaimed May as National Bike Month with a presentation to the Bicycle, Pedestrian and Greenways Advisory Board on Thursday.

The city holds the distinction of ranking No. 1 in Texas for the highest percentage of people who bike to work, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

That recognition, according to staff and cyclists, is unknown to many. Local cyclists said College Station has made several significant pedestrian improvements during the past decade but acknowledged that the…

No Love for the Bugs – May 11th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 11, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2017

I failed to mention the love bugs in my ride recap video. Up to now the bugs were in small random patches along the route but today they became more noticeable colliding into me and landing on my arms and legs. The worst is when they get on my helmet and then crawl over the brim into my eyesight where it is difficult to get at them because of my sunglasses or something else. My stop at the Huffman Chevron was shorter than normal with the pesky bugs flying around and being a general nuisance. Sometimes they hit my sunglasses lens and make a noise catching me off guard.

Last May I rode 826 miles. It will be interesting to see how close I can get to that with missing so many days this May.

How I fell in love with bikes: Lauren
It was the summer of 2009 and I bought my first bike off craigslist. It was a mid 90’s Specialized Hardrock for $75 that my mom picked up for me in my hometown of Belton, Texas. When I got my hands on it I was super pumped and cleaned it up the best I knew how.
I rode that little bike everyday to work at the Texas Tech Aquatic center and thought it was awesome. My commute to work started around 5:30 am, in the pitch-black starry sky, sometimes needing a jacket even…

Tubeless Repair Tricks
by John            www.AustinBike.com

Tubeless tires are great, until they aren’t.  When you first get that set from the shop you can’t believe that you rode with tubes for so long.  Then you have a blowout down the road, or you just need to change your tires.  Everything is nice and smooth the first time, but here are a couple of extra tips to help in putting new tires on older wheels.
First, when you take off your old tires, there will still be some fluid in the bottom of the tire if you are lucky, so try not to spill that all…

Comedian embarks on bicycle trip to Texas
bangordailynews.com

Chris Quimby is a standup comedian, author and graphic designer who is undertaking an eight-week adventure, Spokes and Jokes, with his family, cycling to Texas with their logistic support and performing in venues en route while staying in the homes of hosts across the nation. The family’s blogs of the mission can be viewed at spokesandjokes.com.

It’s one thing to say you believe in something. It’s entirely different to allow that stated belief to have it work in you, for good or for bad.

The evolution of Spokes and Jokes (which rightfully has been referred to as either a mission, adventure, tour or thingie) occurred over the course of about six months, starting as merely a…
