About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

April 21st Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup

Cycling club competes throughout region
by William A. Darnell / Staff Writer        wordpress1.cws.unt.edu
Pre-English senior Matt Iserman’s legs ache, the hundreds of ounces of water he’s consumed pour from his body, he’s already burned thousands of calories and yet he keeps riding for 50, 60, 70, 80 miles.

“Your legs are screaming at you, but you have to push through it,” Iserman said.  “Surprisingly you can, and your legs recover. You’re gasping for air, trying to catch your breath, your heart rate is maxing out, you’re physically out and you realize your output is going down even though you’re giving it everything you have.”

Iserman is the president of the UNT cycling club, which races against universities from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana in the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference. Iserman rides 70 to…

Texas 4000 for Cancer!!!!
by iOS            www.bikeforums.net/
Hey everybody!
I’m a long time lurker and have only posted a few times. This is my current commuter (No thanks to hours of research on this site), but not the one I’ll be using for this awesome charity ride:

Anyways, a little about Texas 4000:
Texas 4000 is a group of about ninety University of Texas at Austin undergraduate and graduate students with a passion for finding a cure and spreading hope for a future without cancer. In the summer of 2014, LIVESTRONG Texas 4000 riders will embark on our annual 4,500-mile journey across North America in hopes of inspiring communities across the country to join us in the battle against cancer. Starting in June 2014, we will ride our bikes from the University of Texas at…

MS-150 rider puts heart to the test
By Ryan Rockett            www.chron.com

The hilly stretch from Bastrop to Austin is a difficult endurance test for all BP MS150 riders, but 57-year-old Peter Dodd faced it Sunday with an extra challenge: he received a heart transplant just 17 months earlier.

“The hills were a nightmare,” the Katy resident said. “I wondered, ‘Did I bite off more than I can chew?'”

A former maintenance mechanic who loved to exercise, Dodd was diagnosed with genetic heart disease 16 years ago. His health continued to deteriorate until…

Chill in the Air – April 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 21, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2017

The chill was still not out of the air as I rode through Walden at Lake Houston and Huffman. The refused to stay out retreating behind the clouds enough for me to wish I had worn two long sleeve jerseys instead of the short sleeve long sleeve combination I chose. The temperature was 74 at my home when I left on the ride but in Huffman it was 72 according to Action Sign’s banner sign. Whenever I rode into the wind while in the shade I got chilly. This happened frequently because of the numerous clouds. The wind was strong at 3.5 mph but when you add my speed it still created windchill. When I got back home at 3 PM it was 78 degrees.

Riding to Walden and Huffman was a 31.3 mile route and I managed a 15.0 mph average speed. My April mileage is inching up and totals 468.83 miles and year to date totals 1783.47 miles. I did not see any other bikers today. This route is a consistent road surface with the causeway over Lake Houston shoulders containing the usual litter.

Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com data links.

Tomorrow it is supposed to warm up some to 79 with partly cloudy skies. Sounds like a great day to ride.

2013 Council Candidate Questionaire
BikeDenton
*Updated with responses from Brendan Carroll and Jim Engelbrecht*
Howard always did really well to ask simple, pointed questions of our local politicians ahead of elections in years past. This year should be no different, as much of the concerns in the post-Denton Mobility Plan-approval world are much the same as before – with give or take marginal progress.

But first, the quick info:

Denton City Elections will take place Saturday, May 11 with early voting starting on April 29. You can find info on all of the candidates as well as whether you’re up to date on registration on…

March Let Go of April – April 20th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 20, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2017

When will the March weather let go of April? When I first checked my home weather station this morning at 7 AM 42 degrees stared back at me. My plan was to wait for the temperature to warm up while I tended our garage sale. This worked out pretty good with me ending our garage sale around 11 AM. The sun was up further as was the temperature. By the time I left on my ride at 12:54 at my house the temperature was 69 degrees but this was misleading because the wind had a distinct chill in it. My first inclination was short sleeve and long sleeve jerseys but thankfully I changed that to shorts, leg warmers, jerseys and windbreaker.

After the garage sale I checked Twitter and saw that one team riding the BP MS150 to Austin had already arrive at the first day stop in LaGrange at 10:30 or so. They said they averaged 27 mph and no stops. I wondered how the 13,000 bicyclists braved the cold.

On my last ride I went north and I generally repeated that route from Wednesday today except I changed the route going out of Kingwood. This was necessary so that I could back home before 3:30. All went well riding north and northwest with the breeze behind me. But when I rode off of Gene Campbell Road onto FM1314 I hit the headwind. I thought it sure was strong for 7 mph. It turned out to be 21 mph gusts along with the 7 mph wind. At the turn onto FM1314 my mileage was 17 leaving about 16 miles to home. My average speed for those last 16 miles could get above 15 mph. Fortunately I had built up enough speed prior to the slow down to keep my overall average speed at 15.3 mph for the 33.48 mile route. Riding in the shade reminded me of the wind chill and my hand and ear that were in the shade felt chilly.

After not riding for two days my April mileage goal looks doubtful but I still have 10 days left so I will keep at it. April miles total 437.53 and 1752.17 miles year to date. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com data and maps.

Thursday I took my wife to the medical center and when we left home at 9 AM it was 77 degrees. By the time we got back home around 2 PM it had dropped to 58 degrees. It rained Thursday afternoon as the front moved through. Friday it took too long for the temperature to climb into the 60’s to ride.
