About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Over Half Way – April 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 16, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 14, 2017

Overcast sky, 16 mph SE wind and 82 degrees awaited my ride today. This allowed me to wear a short sleeve jersey and I was comfortable even with the firm wind. My route selection took me south and east into the wind until I turned north on FM2100 from Old Atascocita Road. I wasn’t the only rider out today as I saw two others. The first biker was in front of me and turned off from the street I was on so I doubt that he saw me. The other one was going the opposite direction on Old Atascocita Road.

I battled the wind until the turn on FM2100 so my average speed for the 33.78 mile ride did not move above 15 mph until I was able to recover the lost time during the last 13 miles. Average speed ended at 15.1 mph. I am making progress on the April goal and with today’s ride miles total 369.02. Today marks over halfway for April. Year to date miles: 1683.66. Link to RideWithGPS.com.

The weather tomorrow should repeat today’s. I plan on riding after I watch the La Flèche Wallonne on Eurosport.

As usual Thursday’s weather brings another front with rain and cooler temperatures. It will bounce back some for Saturday and Sunday for the BP MS150 bicyclists.

Got skills? Prove it and attend Traffic Skills 101
Bike Friendly Oak Cliff
Education is a key component in helping build a bike friendly community, however it usually gets put aside because it’s too expensive, too timely or not cool!

We’d like to help change those notions by working with Bike DFW and certified League of American Bicyclists to encourage more riders to learn the basics of riding in traffic. …

As Population Grows, Sugar Land Looks For New Ways To Bike And Walk
by: Gail Delaughter                kuhf.org
The Sugar Land City Council adopted a hike and bike master plan in 2008. Now officials want to revisit that plan as part of a comprehensive mobility study.

Patrick Walsh is Sugar Land’s Director of Transportation and Long-Range Planning.

“We needed to look at walking and biking as a mode of transportation not just for recreational purposes but for non-recreational purposes as well.”

Sugar Land is doing the study as the city is expected to grow by thousands of new residents. In 2011 the Census…

Support Safe Passing!
BikeHouston

This week, the Houston City Council’s Public Safety Committee reviewed two measures intended to keep Houston roadways safe and secure for all citizens.

The Committee considered a Vulnerable Road Users Ordinance (also known as the ‘Safe Passing Law’), which would protect Houstonians using our roads other than in a motor vehicle, and a No Texting While Driving Ordinance.
As an advocacy group, BikeHouston is encouraged that the Council is…

Clog city’s streets on Bicycle Sunday
Rick Brown, Kearney View
No excuses. Air up the tires, lubricate your chain, dust off your bike seat and make it a point to support bicycling in Kearney when Bicycle Sunday rolls around April 28.

The event features checkpoints along the Kearney Hike-Bike Trail and you could win a 2013 Family Pool pass. OK, forget the checkpoints and the pool pass for a minute and just concentrate on the supreme joy of simply riding a bicycle.

As a child, I remember learning to ride. It felt like…

Woodlands man with MS rides in annual cycling event
By Jonathan Garris                www.yourhoustonnews.com
Ask Hal Agron what bicycling means to him and he’ll say one word: “Freedom.”

“You don’t have any hassles or disruptions,” Agron said. “It’s a great feeling. Being outside and exercising on a pretty day doesn’t get much better.”

At first glance, most would assume Agron is a perfectly healthy 52-year-old husband and father of two children. However, 15 years ago Agron was…

Texas 4000 helps community fight cancer with annual Hope Day

Participants in Texas 4000, a UT student organization, complete an annual bike ride from Austin to Anchorage to raise funds for cancer research.
