About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I  don’t thin that you could have asked for better weather and quite frankly, the trail conditiones were outstanding.  We managed to squeeze out about 12 or 13 miles today and couldn’t have been happier.

The new trials that Brad has been working on were great, I was really happy to see the flow of the upper trails and they just seemed to blend into the hillside, awesome riding.  Now, let’s get cracking on that last…

Visit with Steve Bode – Yuba Bicycles – Director of Sales.
by Matthew Rottman            bike4heck.com

Friday morning I checked my email and was surprised to see a message from Steve Bode the director of sales for Yuba bicycles, makers of the new Boda Boda Cruiser and my beloved Yuba Mundo long tail cargo bicycle. Steve was going to be in San Antonio to talk with a bicycle shop that wanted to possibly start carrying Yuba bicycles. He wanted to know if I wanted to possibly go on a ride with him or if we could sit down and have a beer together. We did both! I was equally excited at the idea of…

First Three-Peat This Year – January 20th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 20, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2017

I delayed the start of today’s ride until after we ate lunch. The plan was to wait for the temperature to warm up and it worked. When I started the ride at 1:47PM it was 71 degrees. I did not let this fool me though. I wore a long sleeve jersey and my windbreaker jacket but no leg warmers. For the first half hour I thought maybe I should have added the leg warmers but as my legs warmed up and I spent some time in the sun I got comfortable. At least one other bicyclist agreed me with me; he passed me around the 2.1 mile point dressed like me. Scattered clouds meant the sun was in and out but fortunately there was no wind.

My route went south today through Atascocita and then Walden at Lake Houston but different from the route two days ago. I avoided going over Lake Houston because the breeze blowing over the lake onto the road was probably very chilly. This route was 23.28 miles long. Thanks to the somewhat mild weather the last three days this is the first time I was able to ride three days in a row since December 17 to 19 last year. So I was able to ride 73.01 miles this week and increase the January total miles to 122.39. I am now only 145 miles away from last January’s total miles. Monday and Tuesday will probably be in the mid-60’s so I hope I can get on the bike.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for January 19th

Cyclocross enjoys banner year throughout region
By Bill Cullins            San Angelo Standard-Times
SAN ANGELO, Texas — The 2012-2013 cyclocross season is winding down, with only a few races remaining on the calendar.

It’s been a banner year for cyclocross both in Texas and across the United States.

At the local level, over 50 cyclists took part in this year’s San Angelo CX series that was held on the campus of Angelo State University. Many of the participants were new to the sport, which bodes well for the future.

Other West Texas locations such as Abilene, Lubbock and Amarillo have hosted similar…

January
RGV Cycling
January has traditionally been a slow month for me and cycling, Cold, wet weather doesn’t appeal to me. I usually end up riding only on the weekends where I can utilized the warmth of the sun to it its maximum.

I was hoping to get the Wahoo Fitness KICKR PowerTrainer to use indoors after work but as of yet it is still not available. Rumors are that it wont be available until March! By then why bother. Not much info about it other than it’s power based trainer and you have to take your rear wheel off and attach it. I was looking forward to crank out some good intervals…

See you at the Cross

Another Almost Warm Ride – January 19th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 19, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2017

Waiting for the temperature to reach 60 today did not take as long as I expected. From a low of 38 when I got up at 8:00 AM it only took about 4 hours to reach the 60+ degree point when I left at 12:48 PM. When I start riding it was 65 and by the time I finished at 2:59 PM it reached 68. The partly cloudy sky helped keep me comfortable along with leg warmers, a long sleeve jersey, a short sleeve jersey and a windbreaker jacket. No full finger gloves today. The light breeze still had a chill to it so I am still wishing for more warmth. Tomorrow I will watch the Tour Down Under race preview show to savor the heat in Australia. Maybe someday I will spend our winter in their summer.

Since I rode to the south yesterday I rode a northerly route to Community Drive and then through Valley Ranch. Not much changed since my last ride along this route. The Grand Parkway construction has not advanced any that I can see. By adding a few extra streets to my typical route I rode 28.13 miles. I managed to get my average speed to 15.1 mph, up from yesterday. I did not see any other bicyclists out today. With today’s ride I now am up to 99.12 miles for January. The weather is supposed to about the same tomorrow so I should be able to ride then. Maybe I can reach last January’s 267 miles. Next Saturday there is the Bike through the Forest and the Hills ride in Coldspring I would like to ride. That is too far out for an accurate weather forecast so I am not sure I will just yet.

I bought a new computer this week with Windows 8 so I am still learning how to use my bike programs. Some of the things I did automatically I now have to think about.
