About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Little Trepidation. Spring Creek Greenway + San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on August 9, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 9, 2024

I started the bike ride with a little trepidation after yesterday’s crash. As I pedaled my right knee road rash was stiff but after a few miles I didn’t notice it anymore. Same with my right shoulder. I planned earlier in the week to ride the Spring Creek Greenway today and it was a good choice with no traffic and wide trails. I rolled away at 9:51 AM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. I wasn’t sure how far I would ride on the greenway but I ended up going to John Pundt Park and then returning back to the US59 trail head. There weren’t many people on the greenway but a few cyclists passed me in both directions. Maybe a weekday and possibly high heat kept people away. After completing the greenway I rode the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway back to Kingwood. The greenways showed fallen trees from Hurricane Beryl but the trails were cleared. I finished at 2:00 PM with the heat coming on. This was the second ride to John Pundt Park this year. The 42.44 miles made up some of the shortfall from yesterday’s abbreviated ride. I’m within 20 miles of the pace needed to reach the 904 mile goal for August.

BikeHouston hopes a new bicycle counter will help make the case for cyclists in Houston

By John Lomax V | www.houstonchronicle.com

A new bicycle counter on White Oak Bayou near the University of Houston-Downtown is helping activists make the case for cyclists in Houston.

The counter, which tallies the number of cyclists that ride by it, was purchased by BikeHouston and installed by the Houston Parks Board. It tracks the number of cyclists that pass by on a given day and maintains a running annual total. The data collected will be used to help BikeHouston prove that there’s a demand for expanded bike infrastructure.

“We’re trying to prove that more people ride bikes than some people estimate,” said Joe Cutrufo, executive director of BikeHouston. “You can’t prioritize what you don’t measure.” …

Survivor of a baby boomer life

Tom Purcell | www.news-journal.com

Editor’s Note: This column is an except from Tom Purcell’s book, “Misadventures of a 1970s Childhood.”

The MSNBC.com article said that kids raised in the ‘50s, ’60s and ’70s are survivors.

We survived chain-smoking adults, meat-and-potato diets and rough-and-tumble fearlessness of every kind, such as the bike jump that nearly killed me in 1972.

It was the Evel Knievel era, after all. Knievel became famous doing wheelies and jumping his motorcycle over cars and buses. Every kid with a bicycle tried to emulate him.

We jumped our bikes from ramps built from warped plywood that we set on rickety blocks. …

A dying dog, a honeymoon delayed and 16th-place finish. The Olympics of Houston cyclist Grant Koontz

By Reid Laymance | www.houstonchronicle.com

MONTIGNY-LE-BRETONNEUX, France — As French cyclist Benjamin Thomas raised his arms while crossing the finish line to win Thursday’s omnium event, to the delight of the crowd at the National Velodrome, Grant Koontz briefly dipped his head as he coasted around the oval.

Koontz finished what he called “a brutal day” in his Olympic debut, finishing 16th in the field of 22 in the event that features four different races in which cyclists earn points.

As he made his way out of the arena some 20 miles west of Paris, Koontz took time to remember the journey from Klein High School, where he played four sports before …

Critical Re-Entry Angle Mistake: Crash

Texbiker.net Posted on August 8, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 8, 2024

After watching stage 4 of the Vuelta de Burgos I set out on the bike ride. Yesterday evening I adjusted the front disc on my Cervelo Caledonia bike and the ride would tell if I fixed the rubbing noise. I rolled out at 10:14 AM to ride the Atasccocita South – Walden – Huffman route. This route averages about 35 miles which help cut into the mileage shortfall to my August goal. The forecast called for 102 degrees later today and I wanted to get back home before that happened. The ride went through Elm Grove Village, North Woodland Hills Village, and Bear Branch Village. I rode beside Kingwood Drive heading east dodging the fallen trees on the greenbelt when I made a re-entry mistake back onto the concrete greenbelt. The front tire caught the edge of the concrete propelling me various directions before landing on the concrete greenbelt. As I got back up pulling the Cervelo from the grasp of the limbs and vines my head was spinning. My right knee had a scrape from the concrete but not enough to bleed though I expect road rash by tomorrow. With my head spinning I couldn’t get back on the Cervelo so I walked the trail to the old HEB building. There I was able to get back on the bike but with the dizziness I rode back home, not wanting to chance any more damage. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be back on the bike. It has been awhile since my last crash.
