About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

USA Travel: Cycling through the hills of Texas wine country
by Robin Soslow             www.thestar.com

FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS—Pedalling by pastures in the chilly crease of dawn, I’m spirited along by chirping birds and sun rays silhouetting trees and distant peaks. On this 44-kilometre journey north to a massive bald batholith dubbed Enchanted Rock, I’ve bypassed straight-shot Highway 965 in favour of loping eastward on my steel steed on Lower Crabapple Road. The reward: grazing cows, horses and deer leaping crossbeam fences.

Those Texas Hill Country inhabitants would appear again, in a completely different context.

The scenic detour was suggested by Lisa Nye-Salladin, a racer who runs Hill Country Bicycle Works. She’d invited me to join her training group’s “leisure” ride, but anyone who takes…

The Main Point: Current bike routes dangerous for all involved
star.txstate.edu
In the interest of students and residents, more efficient and convenient bike lanes need to be installed throughout San Marcos roadways.

The inefficiency of the city’s bike lane system is not only inconvenient for cyclists, but dangerous for pedestrians and motorists. Biking is a unique part of the San Marcos culture. Students and residents who choose to bike should not have to cycle on the shoulders of highways and in the middle of traffic.

According to a Sept. 27 University Star article, bike lanes have been added to River Road, Thorpe Lane, Cheatham Street and portions of C.M. Allen Parkway. The city has also issued a map detailing San Marcos’ different bike lanes and their varying…

If there’s one thing I love more than a bike it’s being able to shake hands and have a conversation with the person who actually built the thing.  There is something special about talking to the builder before the torch touches the tube.  To be able to tell them that I’d prefer to put that rack mount there, or maybe that I think the chainstays should be a little shorter — because, you know, I like to wheelie all day.  You simply can not get that when you…

Cyclocross Madness!   by Raul Bonifacio
You would never think that twenty minutes plus three laps is all you need to push yourself to the limit. I am at the state line of Texas and New Mexico after rattling off 88 miles (140 km). I have covered 700 miles (1000 km) so far. So you get the picture Iam cycling across the US on my global trek….. blah blah blah. Talking about my miles bike and biking is likely getting boring for non-cyclists.The most interesting part of the journey is not only the people one meets but wildlife I am coming across outback on the lonely less traveled roads. Being a true Canadian Im actually used to bears, raccoons, coyotes etc  but the…

Athlete Profile-Jenna Emerick
by Shelby Sementelli        hilltopviewsonline.com

Last fall, senior Jenna Emerick started mountain and road cycling because of her twin sister, who cycles at Texas State University. She wanted to bring the sport to St. Edward’s University and start cycling competitively. With the help of Student Life and Andy Lemons, the director of Campus Recreation, Emerick re-founded the cycling club on campus as a group for students to cycle socially and competitively. Until this weekend, Emerick was the only member to compete through the South Central Collegiate Cycling Conference, but competitive membership tripled this past weekend in the University of Texas at Austin Mountain Bike Weekend 2012 at Flat Rock Ranch in…

Rode Both Bikes – October 3rd Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 3, 2012 by Rick AnkrumApril 20, 2017

I started today’s ride at 1:03 but I actually took a short ride to the post office earlier on my mountain bike. The post office is about 1 1/2 miles away if I take the greenbelt trails. So I set off but along the trail route I ran into three crews cutting trees down in different places. Getting around them delayed me some but I completed my mission to deliver a letter and headed back home. Since it was a short ride I did not bother using my Garmin Edge. After eating some food I started the “real” ride for today going to Atascocita, Walden on Lake Houston and Huffman before turning back to home. This route was slightly longer than yesterday’s coming at 31.69 miles. Average speed settled at 15.8 mph but at the 25 mile point I averaged 16.1 mph. Once I get in the residential areas the starts and stops quickly pull down the speed. Top speed was 22.8 mph and cadence averaged 81.3 RPM.

The weather was one of those perfect fall days: scattered clouds, 87 degrees, 34% humidity and a light 9 mph SE breeze. The weather forecast said the clouds should increase with the SE wind but that didn’t really happen. Sitting in the shade in Huffman felt nice as I drank my Diet Pepsi and ate a Kashi Trail Mix bar. In the short time I was at the Huffman Chevron station two freight trains sped through. There is something about watching trains that I can’t explain. Maybe wondering what is in all of those cars? Moving time totaled 2:00:30 plus 31:17 time stopped.

In the past I noticed that when I stop for an extended time my Garmin Edge 500 registers a given elevation of say 58 ft. When I resume the ride but do not move but 50 feet or so the elevation drops to say 9 feet. This shows up in both Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com elevation charts. Not sure why this happens.

Mileage standings after today’s ride: this week = 92.68; this month = 92.68; YTD = 5389.53. I am course to break my total miles for a year of 5640 in 2011.

My last rear tire patch continues to hold air. I might 4500 miles out of the rear Continental Gatorskin tire. The front one should get many more, maybe 6000 or 7000 miles.
