About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Anthills were recently voted Best Bike Trail in Houston by the Houston Press. GHORBA brought these trails to official status in 2010 and since then has put in significant work to improve and maintain the trails through bridge rebuilds, reroutes, and other maintenance. Help GHORBA support the Anthills by volunteering to helpout in a work party or joining GHORBA to support our mission.

Check out the article at the Houston Press, good job Anthillers!

To Encourage Biking, Cities Lose the Helmets
By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL            www.nytimes.com
ONE spectacular Sunday in Paris last month, I decided to skip museums and shopping to partake of something even more captivating for an environment reporter: Vélib, arguably the most successful bike-sharing program in the world. In their short lives, Europe’s bike-sharing systems have delivered myriad benefits, notably reducing traffic and its carbon emissions. A number of American cities — including New York, where a bike-sharing program is to open next year — want to replicate…

Rain adds element to grueling Tejas 500 bike race
By John Henry, Special to the Star-Telegram
GLEN ROSE — Ultra cyclists who traveled from around the country and various parts of the world to a remote area of Somervell County this week found more than a grueling course of hills and winding trails during a ride the equivalent of a bicycle trip from Fort Worth to McAllen on the border.

Wind and a continuous driving rain throughout Saturday that swelled the Brazos River was Mother Nature’s hard-hearted contribution that gave competitors an additional dynamic to deal with in…

Cyclists ride around Arlington in underwear to raise cancer awareness
Lindsey Juarez, The Shorthorn news editor        www.theshorthorn.com

Moderate rain Saturday afternoon did not stop a group of UTA students and community members from riding around on bicycles in nothing but their underwear.

The group participated in the first annual UNDER(a)WEAR RIDE, a bicycle ride meant to raise money for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas Foundation.

Ellie Hernandez, Maverick Bike Shop bicycle safety coordinator, said she came up with…

Bike for Kids’ Sake in Wylie, TX
by WB admin            The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas
The Bike for Kids’ Sake invites you to join their ride on October 6, 2012 starting at Wylie High School Parking Lot

We were lucky enough to be granted an interview with Michelle Parrish, BBBS event organizer to ask some questions about their upcoming ride.

Why join the Bike for Kids’ Sake?
Bike For Kids’ Sake will help to raise funds and support the hundreds of Abilene children being supported by Big Brothers Big Sisters. It’s also offers 3 different courses and will feature some very scenic areas of West Texas and Taylor County.

How long has the event been around?
This is the first Bike For Kids’ Sake ever organized!

What was the motivation behind starting the tour and who benefits from it?
We realized that our community does not feature any rides during this time of year, so it seemed like a natural fit for local riders. The event will promote Big Brothers Big Sisters, and help to raise awareness for the mission of…

by WB admin                The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas
The Wheels for Meals invites you to join their ride on October 6, 2012 starting at Food Pantry-Jeff Davis County – 609 E Compromise St, Fort Davis, TX

We were lucky enough to be granted an interview with Margaret O’Connell, Chairwoman of Wheels for Meals to ask some questions about their upcoming ride.

Why join the Wheels for Meals?
1. It’s a GREAT cause and crucial service.
2. It’s FUN!

How long has the event been around?
2012 ride is our 4th year.

What was the motivation behind starting the tour and who benefits from it?
I have personally participated in many charity bike rides and saw the power they have to not only raise money, but to raise awareness. When I moved to Fort Davis, I quickly realized the the Pantry was perhaps the single most crucial nonprofit in JDCty, because without the supplemental food it provides, children would not do well in…

Bike Lanes Sprouting Up All Over Dallas
Bike Friendly Oak Cliff

In case you missed the latest news, Dallas is beginning to stripe bike lanes which finally moves us off the list of major US cities without on-street bike infrastructure. Bicycling Magazine, who ranked us the worst city for bicycling again this year, even took note in a recent article. BFOC was instrumental in getting this project put together and was supported by school officials at Rosemont Elementary after the extremely successful iBike Rosemont project which saw bicyling increase to record numbers at the school in short order. The…

Mile 1120  Spirit of America Ride for Hydrocephalus Day 21 – 22 Recap
celsiusbrightconnections.com

On Monday, we took a rest at the Texas border as we traded Louisiana roads for Texas. So far, I have to say, cycling road conditions in Texas are much easier on us. I’m not sure our tires agree. Flat tires have become an almost daily part of our cycling journey. I am not complaining although it is becoming a little “tire…some.” Gatorskin tires and Mr. Tuffy linings are not top sellers in cycling shops back in Florida. I remember talking about them with a few people when we were planning this trip but, at the time, they did not seem worth the extra expense. Man, was I wrong and I’ve learned this lesson the hard way! So far on this trip, I have become a strong advocate of…
