The SCCCC made its 2012 mountain bike season debut at the Camp Eagle Classic in Rocksprings, TX, claimed to be the largest mountain bike festival in the state.  This event brings a wide variety of racers, even including a unicycle race.

The collegiate short track course was relatively smooth with a couple of sandy areas, and scattered changes in elevation; the middle end provided a bit of wooded and rocky single track.  Texas State dominated the Men’s A category, with Brian Barrow finishing first and Alex “Cub” Garza following just behind.  The Super D was quite an unusual event for this conference, but it was a welcome challenge.  This was a mass start event, providing quite a time for the largest category of Men’s C, with seventeen…

Amongst Trees on the Trails – September 5th Bike Ride

After watching the 17th stage of the Vuelta a Espana I went for my ride but not on the the bike I originally planned. I put back my road shoes and got the mountain bike shoes. I thought today would be a good day to ride on the greenbelt trails in mostly shade. Leaving the house at 11:18 I quickly thought of a route riding the opposite direction of Monday’s ride but with only one dirt section; W. Lake Houston to Mills Branch Way. The dirt was packed hard so it felt like I was on the paved greenbelt. We have not had any rain for over a week so with the heat (could reach 100 today) the ground is very dry. This route ended up at 15.1 miles with a 12.1 mph average speed and 17.8 mph max speed. Moving time was 1:14:49 with 3:37 time stopped.

The greenbelt shows the problems from last year’s drought with trees cut and stacked by the trail in many places. With all of these trees cut down there are stretches without any shade but lots of sawdust on the ground. There were a few people on the trails but not enough to cause any problems.

With later start the temperature had time to get up there but only to 90 degrees. The scattered clouds in the sky and calm breeze indicated it would be very warm later in the day. The weather forecast hints at a “cold” front coming to town this weekend but I am doubtful. Last year on this date we were in Chattanooga sloshing around in the warm rain at Rock City. Chattanooga set a record for the most rain in one day.

Love Bug Contact – September 4th Bike Ride

The Love Bugs were out in force today during my ride. They started on FM2100 going north to FM1960. I managed to not taste any of them but they tried. I could hear them hitting my helmet and sunglasses as I rode. The warm moist weather must be bringing the out of hibernation or whatever they do.

I got an earlier start today leaving the house at 9:32 and getting back at 11:47. Scattered clouds with 90 degrees and not much of a breeze made it seem warmer than it really was. I chose a route to Huffman and back. I thought it would be around 27 miles but it ended up at 30.03 miles at a 15.1 mph average speed. I hit 23.8 mph as my max speed and 77.4 RPM average cadence. Moving time was 1:59:38 and 14:59 time stopped, mostly in Huffman at the Chevron station refilling my waterbottle and drying out my gloves and wrist bans. Even though it was not super hot I perspired a lot. Mileage standings after the ride:

  • 74.37 miles for September
  • 4791.63 miles YTD
