About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2012 DORBA Fall Series Race At Sansom Park

Texbiker.net Posted on September 4, 2012 by Shawn McAfeeSeptember 4, 2012

2012 DORBA Fall Series Race At Sansom Park

It’s race time again here in Dallas. Race #1 at Oak Cliff Nature Preserve (OCNP) was a great introduction to the fall series and with race #2 at Erwin Park getting rained out we finally arrive at our next event. Sansom Park.

Virtual Pre-Ride of Sansom Park

(My apologies for not having the tail end of the course on video, after 2 attempts to ride the course and a flat on each try the camera’s battery was dead. Be sure to read my note in orange below about flat prevention for this race.)

For anyone who hasn’t ridden the trail at Sansom Park it is one of the most incredible trails we have in Texas. Not only do you have a spectacular view of Lake Worth and the Dam but you get to ride some of the most challenging singletrack in the metroplex.

Sansom Park has a Ton of climbing, and likewise for descending. The race course uses just 4.5 miles of the entire trail, and lucky for us all it skips the most brutal climbing on the backside of the trail. You can check out this link to see the full race course map.

Click Here To View Race Map

Cat 1 & 2 will ride a slightly different course than the Cat 3 racers here at Sansom. The video above (up until I got flat #2 of the day) was of the Cat 1 & 2 course. As shown in the race course map, Cat 1 & 2 will follow the Green and Blue loops as well as the pink dotted line for Joel’s Loop. Cat 3 follows only the Green and Blue loops, you lucky dogs are skipping Joel’s climb.

The start of the race will be towards the lake next to the pavilion at the back of the parking lot. It will be a dead sprint to the front of the parking lot and onto the beginning of the singletrack on the green loop. After about a mile on the open grass section you dive into the trees and immediately it becomes a much more technical ride.

The split where Cat 1 & 2 head down to Joel’s loop and Cat 3 turns off is a tricky section. It would be a very easy turn to miss for Cat 3, while Cat 1 & 2 should be cautious taking it with too much speed. It has an immediate right turn at the tree line and several hairpin switchbacks. Joel’s climb is roughly half way through the race course and along the way there are several abrupt turns and short-punchy climbs.

After Joel’s loop you are back on the standard singletrack. Mind the rocks and more than anything be consistent, it is a challenging trail but a fun one.

Race Start Times & Distances

Cat 3 – 7:30am – 9 miles

Cat 2 – 9:00am – 14 miles

Cat 1 – 10:45am – 20 miles (age groups 40-49 & 50+ will do 3 laps, or 14 miles)

Analysis & What To Expect

The terrain of the course is rocky, technical and climbs are pretty loose. For those racing on Joel’s Loop, go ahead and expect for the majority of people to be walking up this long climb. It is incredibly loose, with so much loose soil that it was piled up like sand dunes in a few areas. It’s climbable, but it’s going to require that you get into the correct gear ahead of time and maintain a good momentum. A cyclocross dismount and run up the hill will more than likely save you time over trying to ride up.

All racers should very seriously consider using tubeless tires for this course, the trail is filled with rocks and cactus. This combination leads to plenty of thorns in tires and pinch flats from the sharper rocks. A tubeless setup will help prevent the vast majority of flats.

A tip for anyone already using a tubeless system, be sure to add fresh sealant to your tires roughly once a month. I let mine get too low before my pre-ride at Sansom and had 2 flats on consecutive laps. My father raised me with the 6 P’s: Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. I didn’t properly plan, my performance suffered. Such is life. Keep fresh sealant in your tires.

As for winning times; My guess is that the most competitive riders will have lap times around or just under 25 minutes per lap. It will be a very cool race for new Cat 3 racers as they get to experience a water handup. It will also be a great race for spectators because of so many viewing opportunities and the multiple laps.

Race Course Map & Altitude Profile

The map and altitude profile below contains close to 4 laps of the course.

Total distance: 15.22 mi
Total climbing: 994 ft

To register for the race, please see the DORBA race page at http://www.dorba.org/events/69058892/.

I wish everyone a safe and fun race, remember the 6 P’s and you will do great!

A jock moving to Houston
by Lanky_Stu            forums.mtbr.com
Hello everyone,
At the end of October I’m moving to Houston for work, still don’t where I’ll be staying, however I know I will want to continue enjoying mtbing!

I ride downhill, xc and road… Just a bit of everything I guess.

From the googling I’ve been doing so far, it looks like dh in Texas in pretty much non existent sadly, angel fire resort in new Mexico being the nearest for proper gravity riding.

Howevere there seems to be plenty of trails all over Houston to keep me on the xc bike.

I’d like to meet some people who could show me what the Houston area has to offer and generally just looking for riding buddies. I’m not…

“Can’t stop; don’t want to.”
by bikedenton

Happy Labor Day!
Seeing as its my first post go-around, I thought I might begin with a lighter fluff piece.

The cinema lured me out with “Premium Rush”, the tale of a no-holds bar NYC bicycle messenger named Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who receives a package that sets him out on a perilous ride. Wilee is meant to represent the most stereotypical of fixed-gear riders; “Brakes are death. Pedestrians can get you killed. Taxis are a menace. Can’t stop; don’t want to.” make up his credo. His persona makes up the typically likable…

Summer Is Ending – Time To Enroll In Class
by dickdavid            Bike Friendly Richardson
Safety is one of our biggest concerns for cyclists in Richardson. Along with having better awareness, better designed infrastructure and safer routes one of the best things that will keep cyclists safe on the road is being better educated. Whether you are new to cycling around town or a seasoned commuter, there is always something new to be learned with a good bicycle safety course.

Fortunately for us, there are some really good options near by. I am the recent graduate of both the the League of American Bicyclists, Traffic Skills 101 course (hosted by BikeDFW) and Cycling Savvy DFW‘s bicycle…

Dove Season 2012 – Precautions on the bike
by sooner1            Shawnee Trail Cycling Club
“Private tracts used for hunting doves must be at least 10 acres, must be at least 1,000 feet from schools, hospitals, and day care facilities and must be at least 600 feet from residential housing and multi-family residential subdivision property lines. The new rules were approved by the state legislature in 2009 after several close calls and complaints from several cities, including Frisco.”

Another year, another Dove season is upon us.  And, yes this is my annual “cautionary tale” for cyclists in the area.  Although one might think the rules above would preclude a lot of hunting in the area, Frisco is only about 45% built out with a lot of open land.  Couple that with the fact that we are fortunate to have easy access to routes that are mostly out in the country, and this becomes the time for cyclists to be very aware of their…

Summer Not Giving Up – September 3rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 3, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 31, 2017

Labor Day used to be the final send off to summer but today I think summer plans on staying around awhile. As I write this at 3:43 my home weather station shows 100.4 degrees. When I rode earlier the temperature range was 91 to 96 degrees with 44% humidity. The sky is what I call a Texas sky with a few clouds scattered around and plenty of sunshine. The shade felt good when I could find it and the light 6.9 mph WSW breeze sometimes helped cool me off. The WSW direction is what is driving the temperature up. The next several days could be 100 degrees and the heat index could go past 110 degrees.

After riding my mountain yesterday I moved back to my road bike today. My late start of 11:38 came about from watching stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana. The finish included some 24% climbs and the riders moved so slow. I don’t know if I could turn the pedals on a 24% climb. The commentators mentioned the riders might be able to run up the route faster than riding except for their cleats. My route today did not include any climb near that percentage. The steepest climb today went over US59 on Community Drive and I did get out of the saddle to pedal up over it but because I am flat land bike rider. Tomorrow is a rest day at the Vuelta so I should get an earlier start.

My route went north to Community Drive before turning west and back home. The Love Bugs are becoming more numerous but spread out more along the road. I did see a SUV in Oakhurst with bugs splattered over the windshield and grill. My first thought was the Love Bug population has been reduced so they won’t bother me so much. The most problem some thing about them is getting them in your mouth. If you get in a swarm you almost need to stop to brush them off. Be careful though, brushing too hard will smash them. Today’s ride went 28.02 miles at 15.1 mph average speed, 21.3 mph max speed and 77.5 RPM average cadence. Moving time totaled 1:51:19 and stopped time totaled 7:54. My longest stop came at 24.6 miles to wring out my gloves and wrist bands. September miles now total 44.34 and YTD shows 4761.60 miles. Link to Garmin Connect metrics and map.

What’s a Warning to Do?
by Steve A            DFW Point-to-Point

Sometimes government, at least at the local level, is phenomenally responsive. One might wonder about this sometimes. I’ll give you an example. NCTCOG sends me email alerts when pollution levels get high. Things are, in theory, pretty bad when there is an Orange Pollution Warning. We’re told to limit outdoor activity. …

Airmen’s presence uplifting for fatigued cyclists
The Norman Transcript
WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The nearly 12,000 cyclists making their way to the finish line in this past week’s Hotter ‘N Hell 100 mile ride enjoyed temperatures in the mid 90s. But the relatively mild day didn’t matter when we turned south for the final 16 miles and were met with a 13 to 24 mile per hour wind, gusting to 32 miles per hour.

Many took to pushing their bicycles up the interstate access inclines. Others took advantage of trucks and farm trailers for a ride to the finish line. One motorcyclist with a trailer was ferrying…
