About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

If you are paranoid about getting a flat tire on your mountain bike this will help you step back from the edge a little.

Armouring a bicycle tire for final puncture protection.
by Mariano            www.instructables.com

Puncture protection tires are available (quite expensive) which have either an inlay of thick elastic material or a web of strong fibres. Liners can also be placed between the tire and the tube. An alternative to buy one of this products is to cut the bead of old tires and mount them as liners inside of…

Cyclists contribute miles in national bike challenge
Written by Melody Brumble        www.shreveporttimes.com (Video)
Mark Rath turned to pedal power after his knees told him it was time to stop running.

“I’ve only been seriously riding a year and a half,” said Rath, 56. “I was a runner for more than 30 years. When my oldest son was born, I stopped smoking and started running. I wanted to be healthy and be around for him.”

His son, Ben, also is the motivator behind Rath’s increasing dedication to long-distance cycling. Rath is training for the 100-mile Hotter than Hell bike race in Wichita Falls, Texas, this summer. He’s…

Bresenham: Distracted driving hurts cycling hobby
By – Janet Lyn Bresenham        amarillo.com
I love life. I love to ride my bicycle. I should not have to choose between the two. No one should.

Yet, these days, going for a bicycle ride — or even a walk or a drive — sometimes feels like a daily life-or-death choice with the increase in distractions on the road.

When I’m out cycling, I always wear a good helmet and…

NPS streamlines process for trail expansion
WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN) Friday July 6 2012 1:07 PM MT—The National Park Service has updated its regulations around bike access in its parks nationwide. The new rule streamlines the process of trail expansion.

In a press release, the NPS said the rule gives park superintendents the authority to allow bicycles on roads that are closed to motor vehicles—like fire roads and roads used by park maintenance vehicles. Bikes are allowed on park roads open to vehicles. It also moves decision-making about where bike use is appropriate from a regulatory…

Commerce Cycling, a “Wheely” Good Idea
By Cooper Welch            ketr.org
COMMERCE – This summer a local organization is offering a chance to get fit and make friends at the same time.

Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Outdoor Adventure Center is now offering group cycling sessions every Tuesday night at 6. Roger Greer is head of Outdoor Adventure and founder of the group ride.

“I came from Dahlonega, Georgia, and cycling is something I’ve been doing for several years now…” said Greer. “When I got here, we had two bike stands and two bikes, but not really a bike program, and I was like, ‘ok’. There’s lots of cycling around here, but it’s not really something that’s [caught on] here. I mean, we’ve got kids riding around…

Mountain Bike Crashes & Why I Love Them
by Shawn McAfee            Texas Mountain Bike Trails
Mountain bike crashes are just so much fun aren’t they!

Watch this video of me crashing my bike just this week!
So Why Am I So Happy About Mountain Bike Crashes?

Short answer. Because I’m doing it.

I spend 40 hours a week working in a tiny cubicle in an office I highly dislike. 35 of those hours I spend dreaming about mountain biking. The other 5 hours I’m eating lunch. So to be honest I love crashing while mountain biking, because at least I’m out on the trail and enjoying it. …

4th of July Breakfast Ride
by Chris Mathews        Plano Bicycle Association

As the sun rose in the East, 25 of us rolled out of Plano at 6:30 a.m.  Duane and Brent led one group on somewhat of a wild goose chase but got to White Rock Lake and Barbecs safe and sound. Chris led the second group and used a more conventional method to get to Barbecs: He followed the route map. Five Novice riders organized by Tricia Elliott started from Valley View Park and met us for breakfast.  We had 30 cyclists in the restaurant’s private room enjoying grits, beer biscuits, and other breakfast delicacies.  For the return trip we…

My Other Bike – July 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJuly 5, 2012

Another bike lives in my garage! Today the ride was on my Motobecane 700HT MTB. It has been almost two months since I rode my MTB so I thought a change of pace was in order. I am not feeling 100% because of a mild case of sinusitis. Not sure what has irritated my sinus but it could have been the smog last week. Riding the Kingwood greenbelt trails the drought effects from last year are starting to go away as far as the undergrowth is concerned. Of course the trees are another story but small trees are growing up through the debris. At a park in Trailwood Village a toppled tree was a playground for young boys to climb on. I passed several swimming pools some were open and some were not. The trails were not heavily populated but I did pass several other bicyclists. I actually rode on a dirt section from North Park Drive to Kingwood Drive along the drainage bayou.

Riding in the woods the 8.1 mph south wind and sun were minimized. The temperature ranged from 86 to 91 under partly cloudy skies. Tomorrow I want to be back on my road bike if my sinus cooperate. 18.16 miles today, 82.67 miles this week and July, 3396.09 miles YTD.
