About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Give back to your trail – Join in on a Work Party

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2012 by bobdoleJuly 5, 2012
Article category:
General

GHORBA work parties are one of the primary sources of maintenance and enhancement for the local trails.  Each trail has a local trail steward who coordinates and often leads these work parties.  Helping out at a work party is a great way to give back to your local trail and to help maintain the upkeep (overgrown brush, downed trees) or to improve the trails and their structures.  Work party funding is supported through annual Membership Dues and various Grants. For the racers out there, these work parties are also pay-dirt eligible.

Volunteer trail stewards and workers have been busy lately with projects directly affecting the quality of the trails and their work is immediately visible. Through the past few months The Anthills have replaced multiple bridges, Double Lake has re-opened and repaired the trail from the Dangerous Trees Drought Closure, and Memorial Park has built re-routes around unrecoverable trail sections. These are just a few examples of some of the work being done around town; join up with your local trail steward to help make your trail a better place.

Upcoming opportunities are regularly held at trails throughout the Houston area, watch our Calendar Page or join one of the mailing lists below to keep up on new opportunities.  There will also be significant opportunities for work parties at some of our new trail constructions such as the Huntsville Expansion, Flintridge Expansion, and River Bend.  You can read more about these opportunities and their backgrounds on our Advocacy page.

Want to help out? Contact information for our trail stewards is available on each trails page or by selecting the appropriate trail on our contact form.
You can also join in on GHORBA’s email lists to be advised of upcoming work parties

  • Anthills
  • Carl Barton
  • Double Lake
  • Flintridge
  • Memorial Park
  • Sugar Land (This includes both Brindley and River Bend).

Cypresswood and Jack Brooks Park also maintain their own Yahoo Groups. These links will take you outside the GHORBA Domain.

GHORBA is a 501c3 non profit and is comprised of an all volunteer board of directors and contributors.  Your annual member dues are used to support trail work and other club activities.  Looking to renew your membership or join GHORBA? Click here for our membership page.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for July 4th

Texbiker.net Posted on July 4, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJuly 4, 2012

Lots of fireworks and parades today. The community where I live celebrated with an hour and forty-five minute long parade this morning followed by fireworks tonight.

Tips from a pro mechanic #3 – Choosing and working with a bike shop
www.peopleforbikes.org
Whether you are new to bicycling or an experienced rider, it can never hurt to brush up on tips to help you take care of your bike. That’s why we’ve asked pro bike mechanic, local bike shop owner, and friend of PeopleForBikes.org Daimeon Shanks to help us with a four-part series on bike mechanics and maintenance. In this post, Daimeon provides tips on how to choose and work with a bike shop.

(Excerpted from Essential Bicycle Maintenance & Repair by Daimeon Shanks (June 2012) with permission from Human Kinetics Publishers.)
Topic 3 of 4 – Choosing and Working With a Bike Shop

Bike shops, just like car repair shops, can be quite intimidating to the average customer. There’s a specific and sometimes foreign lingo to learn, certain knowledge that’s often taken for granted by experienced shop employees, and a bewildering assortment of options—even for the simplest product categories. It’s important to…

Knob Hills MTB Trail
Had some fun at the trail this morning, but saw several riders without helmets. I’d like to remind everyone that helmets are required on all Dallas/Fort Worth trails. Not only that but considering the response time to come find you if you fall nasty, it’s just common sense.

Saw these guys at a 4th of July ride – they look like #stagewinner material! Post your own photo for a chance to win http://t.co/nPQg6UAJ

2012 ACA SUMMER PICNIC – AUGUST 04
Austin Cycling Association
Come join us for the 2nd Annual CPR Ride and Summer Picnic, aka the Second Annual Memorial Ride and Picnic for the Formerly Late Stanton Truxillo. This ride and picnic, with a free, hands only CPR class, was inspired by the life and brain saving CPR administered by a Good Samaritan when ACA member Stanton Truxillo suffered a massive heart attack on an ACA ride on August 3, 2010.

Last year, we trained about 50+ people on the “Hands Only” or “10 minute” CPR. The CPR class is free to all and will be held at approximately 12:00 noon at the picnic site. …

The City of Irving celebrated their third annual Bike Fest on May 19. The event is a time for cyclists of all ages and abilities to come together for fun and to learn about bicycle laws and safety.

Francesca Funk of the Irving Bike Lane Task Force says, “The Irving Bicycle Fest was started in 2010 to celebrate cycling and give Irving cyclists a chance to gather. Irving is home to so many different types of cyclists, from people who just like leisurely trail rides, to more serious cyclists—such as…

MadeGood Bicycle Tech Library
MadeGood is a free education resource for cyclists, with video and text how-to’s on many common repairs. Sections featuring general information about the basics of how this or that on a bicycle works can be very instructive for new riders, or people looking to understand their bike for the first time. Worth browsing, the site is overall quite well put together.

Bike sales slip, but IBDs ring up strong May
BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) Tuesday July 3 2012 4:59 PM MT— The continuation of favorable weather helped boost May dollar sales to record levels at IBDs despite a drop in the number of bicycles sold, according to new figures from Leisure Trends Group.

Merchandise totaled $372 million for month, up 4 percent from a year earlier and the largest May dollar volume in at least four years, the research firm reported in its RetailTRAK data. Average sale price remained flat as units increased 4 percent. …

Why Endurance Athletes Should Re-Think Fatigue.
by Becca        BicycleLab.com
Fatigue: Why Your Brain Prevents You From Giving Your 100% You’ve probably heard that playing a sport or overcoming a physical challenge is more of a mental effort than it is a physical one. There may actually be some truth to that.   Think about fatigue during a hard workout. It’s extremely uncomfortable, often painful, …

June polo tourney recon
by bikedenton

I had a great time hanging out at the June polo tournament. The draw was good, and I think there were more visitors than Dentonites. Just seeing all these people from near and far coming to participate made me feel proud. Proud that the polo players and the city worked together to make this court happen. Love seeing stuff like…

BikeWrappers brighten up my bicycle
By Pam LeBlanc        Fit City

I dressed up my bike for the morning commute today — not to look any prettier (I kind of like the Cheetoh’s orange paint job), but to make myself more visible on the road.

I do a lot of riding early in the morning, before the sun rises. I’ve got headlights and red blinking tail lights, and I wear a neon green shirt or vest, but I still feel vulnerable when I’m pedaling to swim practice or the office. Now, though, I have a new…

Hotter’N Hell organizers lending their experience
Give advice to planners for race in 2013
by John Ingle        www.timesrecordnews.com
Another bicycle road race could hit the streets of North Texas in June 2013 with support and advice from perhaps an improbable source.

Roby Christie, one of the original organizers of Hotter’N Hell Hundred and current chairman of the Wichita Falls event, said that he and executive director Chip Filer have consulted with people associated with John Peter Smith Health Network in Fort Worth.

They want to create a warm-up ride in the months leading up to the 31-year-old event in Wichita Falls. Although the race in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be the same distance as HHH and offer shorter routes, Christie said he can’t imagine the newly established race…

Houston police raise cancer funds with bike ride
By Jane Jeschke Special to the Standard-Times
SAN ANGELO, Texas — The bike ride can sometimes be punishing. A steep hill, 100 degree plus temperatures, an unforgiving West Texas wind or darkness along a lonely highway.

But they don’t give up. The dog tags around their necks remind them of why they’re riding — to raise money to find a cure for leukemia and lymphoma. And who they’re doing it for — people fighting the disease, survivors celebrating remission and…

Heat Lets Up Some – July 3rd Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 3, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJuly 3, 2012

Nothing dramatic about today’s ride. Overcast skies, a light variable 6 mph breeze, 89 degrees with 60% humidity. The road work on the causeway over Lake Houston on FM1960 moved to the east half so progress to the August finish date looks good. I need to ride in the west shoulder longer now until they move the barriers where they are finished.

Riding through the Bank of America parking lot I rounded a corner and greeted another biker coming towards me. We exchanged hellos.

Today I lengthened my typical Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route to 32.57 miles. Even with a higher humidity I hit 15.6 mph average speed with a 21.3 mph max speed and 79.9 RPM cadence. Mileage standings: 64.51 miles this week and July, 3377.93 miles YTD.
