About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Tires for dry, dusty conditions
by Koin            forums.mtbr.com
Hello, I’ve recently started getting more serious into mountain biking and have been riding on some pretty dry trails. I’m running with Kenda Slant 6s front and rear and find myself sliding out on loose dirt (they are awesome on hardpack and just about everywhere else).

I’ve done some research on tires and the options are so mind boggling. So many out there. What tires/tire combination would be recommended for the Texas summers? I’m in the DFW area.

My main goal is to find a do-it-all tire, something that can grip but not too slow (well I guess that’s really what everyone is looking for). But if this summer is like all summers, it’s going to bone dry and very dusty – but maybe a bit wet at times. … (several replies)

Watch for Tricky People on Bikes
by Steve A        DFW Point-to-Point
In any given situation, the safety of someone on a bike depends on his or her actions and the actions of other road users. This morning, on my commute to work, there was a guy on a bike going southbound down Bellaire a bit north of Bellaire Elementary School. He was hugging the right edge where the gutter pan meets the traffic lanes. Before long, he sort of wandered across the street, more or less in the middle of the left turn lane as he…

Downtown TIFs allocate funds to crucial bicycle infrastructure
Bike Friendly Oak Cliff

The kick in the pants we needed as a city to rev up the implementation of the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan has spurred more entities to help in getting wet paint on asphalt.   Robert Wilonsky reports today that the Central Core Connector has received small, but significant funding from two local TIF entities to help get that…

Bike Month Across Texas – 2012 Review
by Jack Sanford        BikeTexas
Bike Month came and went in Texas with proclamations, events, and celebrations in cities across the state. From a proclamation and group ride in El Paso, a month filled with walking and cycling events in San Antonio, to cities like Sugar Land and Pearland hosting Bike to Work Day events for the first time, Texas grabbed Bike Month with enthusiasm befitting the Lone Star State.

Other firsts for communities include Richardson’s Bike to Work Day Energizer Station. Bike Friendly Richardson reports that they were able to serve around 24 cyclists and motivate many more commuters to try cycling to work. They conclude, “Since it was…

Bicycle progress report: Trails in Houston, parking in Nevada City
by Elly        Taking the Lane

While on tour for the last three years, we’ve had the pleasure of visiting many communities that are in the middle of big changes for bicycling. It’s a heady time right now. A lot of the people we met in the south and midwest this spring said that the bicycling movement in their city had just started taking off in the last three years.

Here are a couple of recent updates from places we’ve visited.

I wrote in April about the grand plan to make Houston the next big bike city, using Minneapolis’s model of developing a city-wide network of off-road trails. Tom McCasland just got in touch to say that a major goal has been achieved in his plan to fund that trail system. Houston will receive $15 million in federal funds from the TIGER grant pool (here’s a pdf of their application), which comes with a $10 million local match, and will go…

Riders who register in advance will receive a tie-dyed T-shirt and pin made by a Bridgewood Farms client. Food and beverages will be available at the rest stops and upon completion. What group should I ride with when I go to Ride Like A Girl?
by Laura Scagno            Austin Ridge Riders
Good question!

If you’ve never attended an RLAG ride before you might be a little bewildered about which group to chose. Remember…it is always your choice.

And if you start off with a group that is going too slow, we try to hook you up with a faster group on the trail. If we are going too fast…well, there is really no such thing. The group goes the speed of the last rider. Please…

The Good Block
by Eliot Landrum        Biking in Dallas

This morning, the sky was blue and the temperatures hadn’t yet reached 90 °F, so I decided it was a good morning to head to The Good Block.  Good 2 Go Taco, Cultivar Coffee, and Goodfriend are the trio that make “The Good Block”. This little renovated shopping strip is an East Dallas treasure, and I’m sure you’ve heard all the great reviews about them.  I threw my laptop in my backpack and made my way to Bike Route 89, aka Peavy Road.  I love stopping in for the morning and working for a few hours with a taco and a…
