About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Just Moved to Houston from CA – help me find a trail please
by mtbnozpikr        forums.mtbr.com
…I appreciate your insight but have to respectfully disagree. I have been here for about three weeks now and am actually getting ready to fly back to get my stuff and move permanently. I believe that a place of residence is what you make of it (good employment definitely helps). It is definitely different than I’m used to (mountain biker and downhill skier), but am approaching it with an open mind willing to learn the traditions and customs of the area as well as take on some of the hobbies done by the locals. I grew up about an hour south of the Canadian border and have lived most of my life in the northern U.S. (northern Idaho and North Dakota) but so far I am having a great time getting used to Houston and exploring what Texas has to offer.

Meet up with your cycling buddies and join the fun!

The Best Bike Lock
by Mario Aguilar        gizmodo.com
Leave a bicycle locked up on the street, and a pro with the right tool can spring it faster than you can buy a Slurpee. We’re not bike thieves—not even close—and we were able to slice through cheap locks with $20 bolt cutters and a hacksaw, on our first try.

So we wanted to see how much a quality U-lock increases the odds that your ride will still be there when you get back. We put four popular brands of locks against those hand tools, and the bike thieves’ weapon of choice—a cordless angle grinder. In the end, we found some locks that…

Marines pass through Texas in cross-country bike ride to benefit wounded soldiers
by Kevin Reece / KHOU 11 News
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas—Four men on recumbent cycles toiled through the Texas heat in Liberty and Montgomery counties on Friday on the third week of a cross-country trip to raise money for injured U.S. service men and women.

And among the cyclists was an injured Marine, cycling without the legs he already gave to his country in Afghanistan.

“One of the guys behind me stepped on a pressure plate, activated the IED and that was that,” said Ben Maenza of the incident that took his legs…

A Donkey and Jenny – June 29th Bicycle Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2012

For a change the weather moderated some today. No 100 degrees just some clouds just 84 to while I rode. When I got back home the electricity was off and a fire truck with flashing lights and siren was moving west on North Park Drive. There may be a connection. The electricity stayed off for almost an hour so something happened.

Starting at 9:44 AM I rode 32.35 miles going north to New Caney and then northwest to Gene Campbell Road. I thought my route would be a couple of miles longer. This road came into existence several years ago for access to a big WalMart distribution center. When I ride on this road 18 wheelers accompany me but so far the drivers give me a wide berth. Now several other businesses reside along some side streets from Gene Campbell Road. It has been awhile since I went by these other businesses so today I took a spin and was surprised to see the number has increased. One empty building now has construction people working on it expanding and updating it.

Riding southeast on FM1314 after turning off Gene Campbell Road the headwind slowed me down some but not so much to lower my average speed too much. At one time I thought my average speed would be 16 mph or more but it ended up at 15.5 mph. My max speed was a strong 24.7 mph and average cadence of 79.0 RPM was a 1 RPM improvement from yesterday. This table shows I need to get the zone 3 speed up if I am going to hit the 16 mph average speed.

Riding time was 2:05:28, around my normal length, with 39:34 time stopped. Most of the time stopped was at the Exxon station at US59 and FM1314 in Porter. I picked up a Greensheet newspaper to read the for sale ads while I drank my Diet Pepsi. Nothing caught my eye to buy but I did see someone selling a donkey and jenny for $60; just what I need for my backyard.

Mileage standings: 94.86 this week, 523.04 for June, 3313.42 YTD. With one more day in June I could make it to 555. My long term average for June is 536 miles.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup June 28th

National Bike Challenge Update
BikeTexas.org
Back in May, BikeTexas mentioned the National Bike Challenge right as it was kicking off. The challenge is now coming up on its halfway point.

To date, the program has just over 28,000 riders nationwide who’ve ridden more than 6 million miles. Altogether, riders in the challenge have burned more than 144 million calories and saved over $1 million in transportation costs since May 1. (Please remember that the challenge site updates frequently; these numbers will go up quickly!)

Here in Texas, 834 people are taking part in the challenge, for a combined…

DATES Ride and Event Schedule

Where:   Home of Roane & Juanita Logan – Farmers Branch
Category:     DATES ride
4th of July Ride, Cook-out, and Swim
Join Roane and Juanita for a no-drop ride on July 4.  Due to the closure of several bridges over I-635, and the near impossible commute over the ones that are still open, we put together a new route this year.   The ride starts at our house in Farmers Branch, as always, but we’ll go to Las Colinas instead of Dallas.  On the way, we’ll hopefully catch the July 4th Walk…

A bicycle and a few friends lead a big man into an even bigger world
by VeloNews.com
Two years ago, Ernest Gagnon weighed 570 pounds. The 30-year-old lived in self-imposed exile in his Massachusetts apartment, leaving only to go to work and to the grocery store. He was depressed, lonely and suffering from crippling anxiety.

Then the doctors gave him the news and two choices: Gagnon had type 2 diabetes; he could undergo gastric bypass surgery or die.

Gagnon chose a third option — cycling. …
