About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Myth or Method?
by Steve A            DFW Point-to-Point
Amazingly often, I hear people advocate riding against traffic. Almost invariably, their stated reason is to see oncoming traffic in case they need to jump off their bike.

Well, in the one recent time I had an “oncoming car” experience, I didn’t have any time to take evasive action or to jump off my bike. Which brings up the question of whether it is actually possible to actually jump off a moving bike. For that matter, might my loyal reader know how such a feat might be accomplished even from a stationary bike. It MIGHT be possible with a step-through frame, but even then it seems much more just a theoretical…

Mountain bikers get a taste of slick rock riding in the Hill Country
Reveille Peak Ranch hosts events, caters to cyclists and trail runners

Pam LeBlanc AMERICAN-STATESMAN
BURNET — Cranking a bike up the grippy, sandpapery rock at Reveille Peak Ranch feels a little like pedaling across a lunar landscape.

Bikepacking in Texas?
by Bill in Houston        forums.mtbr.com
Have any of you ever bikepacked in Texas?
I am trying to figure out where there would be miles of trails/fire roads/FS roads, opportunities to tank up on water, and not too many rednecks/meth-heads/drunk teenagers throwing stuff at me. Any ideas?

McKinney Velo Camp 2012

Under the good strong leadership of Jeff Fene, this group of McKinney Velo racers is enjoying the scenic roads of the Fredericksburg area by day, and sharing food, spirit and camaraderie at night. So far, the weather is cooperating and everyone is… if not in good fitness, at least in good spirits (yesterday’s standoff with a rabid llama notwithstanding).

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for February 10th

United States Bicycle Route System
www.adventurecycling.org
The United States Bicycle Route System (USBRS) is gaining support daily. Click on a state on the National Corridor Plan map (at the above link) to see that state’s progress on the project (or scroll down to see a state-by-state listing).

About the Project
The National Corridor Plan map identifies 50-mile wide corridors, both prioritized (numbered) and un-prioritized (faint brown corridors). The plan can change — based upon state opportunities and interests — with new corridors or realignments. As corridors become official routes, the wide swaths of color that show the corridors on the map will become solid lines to define actual routes (see USBR 76 and USBR 1 in Virginia as an example). Links to U.S. Bike Route (USBR) maps, state bike maps and informational websites will be provided as they become available.

Phase I: Planning
Bike Texas is working on historic and cultural Texas Bicycle Tourism Trails in coordination with the state DOT. The tourism trails could become routes for the U.S. Bicycle Route System. For more information or to volunteer, contact mark at Bike Texas

Biking on one wheel is half a bike but twice as challenging.

Unicycling provides fun challenge
By Bill Cullins            San Angelo Standard-Times
Get on your mountain bike and start riding a typical off-road trail.

Cruise the trail for a few minutes, getting “the feel” as you negotiate your way through turns, over rocks and roots, around ruts and up or down inclines.

Now take your hands off the handlebars and ride that same section of trail with no hands — just hold your hands out to the side to (hopefully) maintain balance…

The then-30-year-old had first consulted a physician about the pain in his lower back in October 2008 and had been given a long list of remedies.

None of them helped. Exercise and stretching didn’t ease his pain. Pain pills didn’t reduce his discomfort. He was unable to sleep, thus unable to…
