About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for January 12th

Texbiker.net Posted on January 12, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 13, 2012

The Houston City Council had some fireworks over bike paths. Two council members sparred over spending in their districts in public. Interestingly the one council member that objected to spending in another district voted for spending in her district.

City Council dust-up pits newcomer against veteran
By Chris Moran, HOUSTON CHRONICLE
It was about a bike path. But it was about so much more.

Councilwoman Helena Brown and Councilman James Rodriguez squared off publicly Wednesday in the kind of bare-knuckled politics usually deployed in a back room.

The outer layer of the onion had them disagreeing on whether the city should spend $2.3 million on a bike path along Sims Bayou in Rodriguez’s District I. Brown called it a “luxury” the city cannot…

Updated details for Rocky Hill Ranch ride Saturday January 14
by Laura Scagno             Austin Ridge Riders
It is definitely cold today and most likely tomorrow but Saturday should be warmer.

The Austin Ridge Riders will be cooking up sausage wraps post ride. We’ll wrap them up in warm tortillas and provide salsa, spicy mustard, guacamole, sour cream and other fixings plus some chips and sweets. I plan on picking up some veggies patties and/or veggie dogs for our non meat eating friends.

We also will have soda, water and beer (for those of legal drinking age). Everyone is encouraged to bring something to share. Potato salad or…

Must Read: Who pinched my ride?
by VeloNews.com
Outside — Infuriated by bicycle theft and empowered by Garmin tracking devices, Patrick Symmes set out on a quest to uncover the mangy underbelly of bicycle theft. By strategically leaving trackable bikes poorly secured around the city, Symmes tantalized bike vultures and lured them in to pick at his two-wheeled carcasses.

He found that “the futility of locking is shocking,” and every security product can be manipulated by a desperate junky. According to Symmes, “in America’s rough streets, there are four forms of currency—cash, sex, drugs, and…

Dallas Bicycle Cafe coming soon!
by Christopher Curnutt            Biking in Dallas

I got this tip reading the Lakewood/East Dallas Advocate.  As many of you know Dallas Bike Works (Northwest Highway and Lawther – map) has an adjacent spot that begged to be utilized as some sort of eatery. Well it’s finally happening, Dallas Bicycle Cafe will be “opening soon” and from what I can…

Airman injured as bicycle struck
Driver was not wearing her glasses
By Jennifer Rios            San Angelo Standard-Times
While bicycling to work, Robert Antoine Abrom wore his helmet, reflective vest and rode correctly with traffic on his way to Goodfellow Air Force Base.

About a quarter of a mile from base, the 31-year-old airman was struck by van whose driver, police said, wasn’t wearing her glasses.

Abrom was taken to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance after the crash, which was reported about 5:50 a.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of South Chadbourne Street, police spokesman Lt. David Howard said. …

Jan. 3: Carlos & Shiro, Tiny Spots Along the Way to Huntsville on TX 30
by Steve
Carlos was a tiny little place where i stopped for a min to try to come out of my East Central TX allerginess a bit more. Sort of refreshingly sparse landscape, population probably in the 100’s for both towns, with lots of farmland. Shiro was a bit more of an extended stop, a tiny bit bigger. The bull in the attached pic was in Carlos I think, while the “Have a Nice Day” was in Shiro, i believe. Either way, was a cool, mostly low traffic day. Biggest drama came from learning to live…

The Hump Day Quick Tip – Get Rid of Butt Pain
by Shawn            Texas Mountain Bike Trails
One of the first complaints that new mountain bikers have is that their butt hurts.

As active as mountain biking is it still puts you sitting square on your butt for some pretty long periods of time. Texas mountain biking covers a lot of rough terrain that intensifies the soreness when you hop over a rock or a root and feel your seat jab into your rear.

Today’s quick tip is how to deal with that discomfort and overcome the pain you feel. …

Should I survive, I expect to be feted and recount the incredible tales of my adventure over countless glasses of sherry. Plus…

UNL grad’s two-year bike trip crosses countries, cultures
By PETER SALTER / Lincoln Journal Star
His co-workers thought he was cheap, this Nebraskan living in Austin but not really living.

Trevor Wright didn’t go out. Didn’t eat out. Didn’t buy drinks. Didn’t drive. Shared a room to cut rent.

He was socking away more than he was spending, collecting enough cash to get out of Texas, out of the United States and out of North America. Two-and-a-half years later, he had saved $35,000 — more than enough to spend the next two years seeing, and tasting, South America from two wheels. …

Bike tour returning to Houston
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
The tour, now in its seventh iteration, will return March 18 courtesy of the Apache Corp., which has sponsored the charity ride after a lack of funding caused the event to not happen last year. An Apache representative said the Houston-based oil and gas company, which just planted its millionth tree in the city and wants to plant 3 million throughout seven states, was willing to sponsor the event if all proceeds could go to the reforestation program. Susan Christian, director of the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, said Parker is appreciative of corporate efforts to save the event after economic hardship claimed it last year. …

After much delay I’m back biking today – January 11th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 11, 2012

After much delay I was back biking today. Between the rainy and chilly weather and recovering from my surgery today is my second ride of the year. I wanted to get several more rides. Now the weather looks like it will turn wintery on me starting tomorrow and continuing until maybe Sunday. Today’s weather was almost perfect with a clear sky, 71 degrees and a stout 13 mph wind from the SSW, gusts were up to 21 mph. Yesterday it only got up to 56 degrees. After the deluge of rain on Monday the trails were water covered in several places. Fortunately my area of Houston did not get as much rain as the southeast side.

I decided today I would ride my mountain bike due to my surgery scar still is stiff and moving my left forearm is not as fluid as normal. The goal was to ride more than 15 miles which I did ending up at 20.44 miles. I overdressed so at about the 3 mile mark I took off my leg warmers. I still wore my long sleeve jersey and windbreaker becuase the wind was a little chilly in the trees on the trails. When I stopped to remove the leg warmers I snapped this picture with my phone.

Motobecane 700HT MTB amongst the cut trees

The bike is leaning against a tree cut down for either the drought or the pine bark beetles. They are still cutting trees down. There were a couple of places where the tree cutters had the trails closed for work.

My average speed was not that great at 11.5 mph. I thought this would be higher as I was biking but the time spent going into the wind must have slowed me down more than I realized. Max speed was 20.4 mph and my average cadence was 74.9 RPM. My left arm is not as free to pull on the bars as my right so this could play a part. My year to date mileage is now up to 37.07 miles. I need to be pushing the pedals to get to my usual 200 miles for January.

Link to my ride at Garmin Connect.  Link to my ride at RideWithgps.com.

Close Call In Columbus
By Brad                        Urbanvelo.org

If you’ve been riding long enough, you’ve had a close call with a car if not worse. Saturday night was my night for a close call, thought it was significantly closer for some others, as a group I was riding with in Columbus OH was hit from behind at speed. Two riders took the brunt of the impact as the car swerved at just the last second to not take out our entire tightly packed group, and I’m happy to report that each is doing well after some scary moments roadside and a night or two in the hospital for observation. Beat up, but given that at least one of the riders was blown out of their shoes upon impact amazing that a broken collarbone and a “slight” concussion is the worst of the injuries between the…

Day 3: Aggie Land
By Steve        Tour de life
Aggie Land, home of a much-maligned class of people. For whatever reasons, my longtime Louisianan homeland always seemed to absolutely delight in belittling & ridiculing “Aggies”.

Why Louisianans could claim superiority to these people, who I and lots of other La. folks probably never even much met, i’m not sure at all. Surely is interesting to me, why all the disdain from my La. Brethren on the Aggies. Maybe because they feel like hicks themselves, best to knock the hicks down the…

1st week in January
by katiejo            Austin on Two Wheels
It’s the day before Christmas Eve. It’s 4 o’clock in the afternoon, and the drury sky has been the same shade of gray and glum all day long. I’m biking across town, which is one of my favorite activities to relax. It calms me to roll through the shifts in urban landscape, and calm is exactly what I need among the fury of cars that I imagine must be whizzing from shop to shop gift buying.

At this point in my ride, I’ve just pedaled underneath IH 35, headed east on 4th street. I head north on Chicon Street. There is a stark contrast between east and west 6th Street at the intersection of 6th and Chicon. The…
