About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for January 5th

Texbiker.net Posted on January 5, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 5, 2012

Do you know a fifth grader?

“Bicycling Takes Me Places”—The Saris Fifth Grade National Poster Contest
Peopleforbikes.org

For the second year in a row, bicycle company Saris Cycling Group is organizing a bicycle-themed poster contest for fifth grade students. Last year, more than 5,000 students participated. The theme of this year’s National Poster Contest is “Bicycling Takes Me Places.” Saris believes that asking students to design posters encourages them to think about the benefits of bicycling. At Peopleforbikes.org, we believe in encouraging bicycle advocacy from a young age, which is why we want to get the word out about this competition. In addition to student participants, Saris is looking for state coordinators for the contest, which ends April 1. …

Cycling Double-Speak
www.corinthcycling.com
It’s that time of the year again – the time of year when riders start to break out the cycling double-speak.  Here are some of the comments you might overhear on an upcoming group ride:

I’m tired today = I feel great and plan to dust you

No-drop ride = Better bring your cell phone, because you’ll need directions later

I’m sticking to my training plan = I’m on the wheel of the first guy who makes a move…

Path Passing on the Darkest Mornings of 2012
by Steve A            DFW-Point-to-Point
Well, the challenge was posted. HERE. What is proper trail etiquette? This morning, I simulated same on a video. You’ll see how things worked. No pedestrians were harmed in the making of this video and I’ll imagine that y’all can see one reason why pedestrians present no danger when I pass, even if they go the WRONG WAY, as well as one reason why paths are a bit skitchy when I ride them. Really, I prefer roads. They’re SO predictable! …

Resolution Tested
by Steve A            DFW-Point-to-Point
Yesterday morning, my resolution wavered. It was dark. It was cold. The Armadillo blew off the rear rim of my wife’s bike (modern tire on an old, non-hook bead rim. About 3/4 miles from home which is too close to want to fix it in the dark but far enough to let me THINK; “Golly, maybe I ought to simply DRIVE” to work. After all, I hadn’t done anything to get Buddy properly tuned after I got it back from the shop (at a cost of 0.6 Jaguar Units – bikes ARE different). Even when I got home, I thought about it once…

Today I Will Review A Revolutionary Step in Bicycle Eyewear- Moto-Optix Lenses.
by Justin            The Plano Cyclist
I got a Moto-Optix polarized bicycle lens in the mail the other day, and while I haven’t had a whole lot of time to write about it, I have had time to use it, and this really is an incredible piece of equipment.

The lens comes with everything you see here – well, yours most likely won’t come with a fancy handwritten note, because you aren’t a famous blogger. The lens is a single piece that you attach to your helmet via Velcro. Installation is a snap; peel the included Velcro from the…

Trading My Bike for Shoes The Next Few Days

Texbiker.net Posted on January 5, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 5, 2012

For the next several days I am off the bike due to surgery today. I am not supposed to pull or exert effort on my left arm while the stitches heal. The reason for the surgery was to remove Squamous Cell Cancer from a spot on my inner left forearm. Since bikers ride outside in the sun (most of the time anyway) we are exposed to ultraviolet rays and other stuff that can increase the likelihood of skin cancer. Up to this point I did not think I was having a problem but a visit to my dermatologist in December resulted in a biopsy which showed the skin cancer. I would recommend that every biker get a checkup for skin cancer.

I don’t want to bore you with too many details but I have learned a few things about skin cancer:

  • Squamous Cell Cancer is the second most common one
  • there is a  Skin Cancer Foundation
  • Mohs Micrographic Surgery

So today after two rounds of Mohs surgery I have a 2 inch long incision with a bunch of stitches. I decided to walk about 3 miles to replace the bike ride I was planning in the great weather we were having: 74 degrees, partly cloudy sky and a light breeze. In my last ride report I said I hoped to ride more in January 2012 than January 2011 but this will slow me down for few days.

For the record below is a picture of my bandaged forearm.

Safety in numbers: more walkers and bicyclists, safer walking and bicycling.
by: P. L. Jacobsen
Injury prevention : journal of the International Society for Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention, Vol. 9, No. 3. (1 September 2003), pp. 205-209.
X Abstract

A motorist is less likely to collide with a person walking and bicycling if more people walk or bicycle. Policies that increase the numbers of people walking and bicycling appear to be an effective route to improving the safety of people walking and bicycling.

With all of the trees being cut down due to the drought and pine bark beatles this is a way to use some of the output.

Converting Condemned Trees into Bikes
by Mark Frauenfelder        Make Magazine

Urban Tree to Bicycle from Spots Unknown on Vimeo.

Jeff Diehl made this short film about Bill Holloway and Mauro Hernandez, of Masterworks Woodworking, who “salvage condemned city trees, then build beautiful bicycles out of them.”

He says:
The story of these bikes goes from the felling of a family’s guardian tree, through the woodworking process, and finally, the completion of art you can ride.

They’re self-taught, and the custom bikes are an offshoot of their larger woodworking and detailing business. Bill is a native San Franciscan, and his family has deep roots here. The dynamic between him and Mauro is a compelling…

Corinth trail beauty
by bikedenton

I haven’t written much for BikeDenton lately, but I’m still riding around and taking photos. We’ve had some golden weather, and I’ve taken my own advice to get off the internet and ride a bike. As often as possible.

Just before the new year, I went out and explored the Corinth mountain bike trails on my CX bike, and I snapped these photos on the  first section, just off the Denton Katy rail trail. It’s the least challenging section of the trails, but I really like the aesthetic. Creek, grazing horses and cows, barns, timber fence. The rest of the trail is twisty, as it has to be in such a small space, but it’s still fun to ride and easy enough that I’ve done it on wider road tires…

Our Thoughts are with Liberty Kat aka Misty

For those of you who are not aware, last Saturday Kat crashed during a downhill on the group ride in McKinney.  Someone who was with her said that they noticed her front wheel began to wobble and the next thing they knew she was down.  After the crash her chain was undone but that could have been a result of the…

2012 Hill Country Ride For AIDS: Annual Texas Bike Ride
BY Rebekkah Adams        askmissa.com
Although it is still winter, here in Texas we are already gearing up for the summer weather and all that it brings. Included in this is one of the best forms of exercise: biking. Of course, this is good to do recreationally for health and fitness but in Austin we also host a number of charity rides. The Hill Country Ride for AIDS, an annual Texas bike ride, does not take place until April 28th but it is never too early to start training. To build up expectations and encourage participants to train, they are holding a series of events between now and the ride itself. It all begins on January 13th with the Kick-Off Party at Austin Music Hall. …

Why Be Offended By Winning?
By Justin            The Plano Cyclist
I finally got my trophy from the 2011 Tour De BBQ in the mail the other day. I was (to say the least) very excited to receive it. I haven’t won an award of any type in years, and sometimes, like a 12 year old, I need validation. I’m not proud of it, but I am honest about it. Thanks to lots of fundraising, emailing, begging, and cajoling, I was indeed the first place fundraiser for the ride this year. Not second, not third, or someone who merely met their goal, but number one. …

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for January 3rd

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2012

House envy for this home is hard to suppress. If they can build this in Portland, Oregon, why not in Texas? Just the fact that they 22 bikes between them is over the top.

A House Built for 2 (2 Bicycles)
urbanvelo.org

I want to hate these people. I really do. But as someone who is currently in the emotional vortex of the home buying process, I more envy their ability to build a house from scratch to suit their needs. And let’s face it, if we were all One Percenting bike enthusiasts, this is the kind of house we would build for ourselves as well.

Avid cyclists and professional racers, Tim and Sue Butler designed and built this house in Portland Oregon to suit their cycling needs, which are both many and extravagant. The house contains an…

Cycling is more than finishing first
By Neil Browne            roadcycling.com
As the new year begins I think about what cycling means to people.

Cycling isn’t always about who is the first across the finishing line or about the newest tech gadget. Cycling is much more than that and I look at what inspires the passion before focusing on the approaching 2012 road season.

I recently discovered a new social media site that has started to suck up my time – Pinterest. Type “cycling” into the site’s search engine and you’re rewarded with pages of beautiful images of not only racing, but the spectacle of the sport and the passion of those who enjoy it – either as a competitor or as an enthusiast. Who isn’t inspired by an image of the peloton climbing a sinuous mountain pass? The colors of the various jerseys create a kaleidoscope…
