About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Daily News Roundup January 2nd

Texbiker.net Posted on January 2, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 2, 2012

This first article is not a Texas based one but maybe some father/son would be interested in beating the record.

Father-son duo rides into history with national bicycling record
by Mike Lesko | Associate Editor        www.stowsentry.com
Matt Knott, left, of Stow, and his father, Chuck, set a national record in the father/son category in the National 24-Hour Challenge bicycle race in Middleville, Mich.

The first phase of the bicycling career of Magnolia’s Chuck Knott, 59, started about 35 years ago.

After the birth of his three sons, though, he rarely had time for cycling.

About 10 years ago — after his sons were grown — he pedaled back into the sport and brought his son, Matt, of Stow, along with him.

These days, Chuck still rides a lot more than Matt, 28, but when they are training for races, they ride together as often as possible. …

Cycling – Turning a Tadpole Trike into an Offroad Sandhog
Don Bynum’s Blog

Okay, this had the potential to be one of those “Hey honey, hold my beer and watch this!” moments that have provided amusement for the ladies in our lives.  This one involved a 14.5 mile round-trip ride from the Bluffton Post Office on FM2241 to RR261 to the east/south, to Shaw Island Road, to the end of Shaw Island and then across the dry lake bottom to the ruins of Old Bluffton. It is a Mountain Bike Ride due to the segments out and back on the lake bed which is very sandy in places.

This ride is not suitable for road bikes, motorcycles or cars/trucks (the latter being subject to some hefty fines if caught.)  While I describe it as a mountain…

Jacksonville retiree gives away repaired bicycles to needy children

JACKSONVILLE, Texas — Gerla Rangel isn’t old enough to drive a car, but he still enjoys his own set of wheels, courtesy of neighbor Oscar Harper.

The 9-year-old received two bicycles from Harper, one last year and another this year.

He said he feels good because he rides his bike all over his neighborhood.

“Sometimes my cousin takes me to the park, (and) sometimes my mom tells me to go to my aunt and take her something then come…

Octopus Winter Cycling Cap – Made in the USA.
By Justin                The Plano Cyclist
My name is The Plano Cyclist, and I love cycling caps. There, now my dirty secret is out in the open for all of us to process and talk about.

Even though I love cycling caps, I’m not one of those guys who wears a cap off the bike; while I admire the fashion forwardness ( and mustachios) of those guys, I am more practical and just wear them when riding. However, the big problem with cycling caps is that they aren’t warm. That is good in the Texas summer, but when the weather cools here (which it most certainly does), I find myself without a cap to wear. I do have one of those technical type helmet liners somewhere, but it makes me feel like some sort of mental patient. Mostly…

How to Really Succeed in 2012
by Shawn        www.texasmountainbiketrails.com
Welcome to 2012. It is truly great to be here. I shared with you in the last post why 2011 was the best year of my life. Today I want to share with you the one simple way to make 2012 the best year you have ever had.

We are now a couple days in to 2012 and everyone is talking about their New Years resolutions and goals for 2012 – what they will change and how they plan to make this new year even better. On Twitter, I asked people what their cycling and personal fitness goals were going to be. I have to say, the answers were interesting. Here is just one of…

Battling a 20 MPH North Wind – January 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on January 1, 2012 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 1, 2012

I started the first bike ride of 2012 battling a 20 mph north wind and 67 degree temperature. This was very different from the 72 degrees and light southerly breeze from yesterday. A cold front is supposed to arrive tonight so I wanted to get the initial bike ride for 2012 in the book because tomorrow will probably not be warm enough. The blue sky was nice to look at after the overcast sky from the last two days. The wind required extra effort from my mountain bike pedaling but I was able to call forth the energy to make it happen.

There were a number of people and families out walking, jogging and biking. The trails were not too congested and we all shared the space. My first ride in 2011 was on January 1st as well but the next ride was not until January the 6th. I hope to get ride two in with less of a delay. The 16.62 miles today was a good start with last year’s initial ride was 14.42 miles. For one day the biking status is all the same. My average speed was down a little to 11.9 mph, max speed was 21.3 mph and average cadence was 76.7 RPM.

Continuous Aerobic Exercise Gets Rid of Belly Fat
Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine            December 31, 2011
A review of 35 studies shows that continuous aerobic exercise is far more effective that lifting weights in reducing belly fat (Obesity Reviews, January, 2012;13(1):68-91).

HIGH INSULIN LEVELS CAUSE BELLY FAT: Having abdominal obesity and small buttocks means you have high blood sugar and insulin levels, and are at high risk for diabetes and a heart attack. Insulin causes fat to be deposited in the belly and around organs. If you have small buttocks, that increases risk for diabetes and high insulin levels even more because insulin causes fat to be deposited selectively in your belly.

DIABETES MEANS THAT BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS RISE TOO HIGH. This causes sugar to stick to the outside surface of cells. Once there, sugar can never get off. Eventually it is converted to sorbitol which destroys the cell to cause all the side effects of diabetes: blindness, deafness, dementia, heart attacks, strokes, impotence, cancers and so forth. …

Seen at the Biking in Dallas Arts District Bike Crawl
by Christopher Curnutt            Biking in Dallas
We toured the Crow Collection of Asian Art, then had lunch at the many food trucks nearby.  Hint – the green tea with honey from the Korean BBQ place is awesome.  Then we crawled through the district, took some photos at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and ended the day touring the Nasher Sculpture Center.

The weather was perfect and it was nice spending time with old friends and making ones.  We had folks attend from all over including far north Dallas, Plano, Deep Ellum, and even Wiley (Kris #2) join us.  I’ll be planning another Arts District event, one that will include a formal route and ride and that happens on a weekend so that…

Cycling City: Holland Racing Gets the Nod For Club of the Year
By EricPickhartz         www.austinpost.org
Austin is again being nationally recognized as a cycling city with USA Cycling’s recently announced list of the 2011 Clubs of the Year, with Holland Racing taking the honors.

Three separate tiered awards were given out, all based on number of members. Holland won the Division III Overall Club Award for groups of less than 30 members. The other winners were Full Spectrum Racing from Fayetteville, North Carolina (30-75 members tier) and the Matrix Cycling Club (75+) in Dallas, giving Texas two of the three recipients. …
