About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Pedaler Newsletter
San Antonio Wheelmen
Season’s Greetings!  Are you hoping for some cycling goodies in your stocking later this month?  I know a few members who received new bikes earlier in the year.  They must have been on their best behavior in 2011.  Since I wasn’t, I’ll settle for some socks and a new pair of sunglasses.

Tomorrow, we have the Bullis County Park ride and Sunday’s ride is in Castroville.  Unfortunately, there is rain in the forecast for both days.  Please…

Cowgirl on wheels
by katiejo        Austin on Two wheels

American modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham describes the process of creating art as “… a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive.”

This statement makes me ponder how bicycling riding and art meet at a cross path. The recent East Austin Studio Tour is a perfect illustration of art and bicycles meeting. I’m proud to call east Austin home, and the…

From The Suggestion Box – Let’s Talk About Lights
by dickdavid        Bike Friendly Richardson
A couple of years ago, we opened up the BFR Suggestion Box. This is a place where the Richardson bike community can voice their opinions and suggestions for other Richardson cyclists. It’s been a while since our last posting, so I thought we should share another.

Fellow bike enthusiast, Nick F., sent us a great email sharing his innovative lighting solutions on a budget. He also asks what other folks do for lighting solutions during the darker days of winter. We thought it would be great…

Plenty of gift options for the athlete on your Christmans list
By Bill Cullins            San Angelo Standard-Times
Christmas gifts are a great way to encourage a healthy fitness lifestyle.

There are only 22 shopping days left, so it’s time for Santa to start finding the perfect gifts for the athletes among your family and friends.

In the “Under $25 stocking stuffer” category, you have a ton of options. For cyclists, you might think about a Blackburn mini-pump ($25-$30), an Innovations Proflate CO2 inflater ($18-$25) or possibly some cool-weather shoe covers such as the Castelli Belgian Booties ($22). …

Today I’m going to make one post with links to all of the companies that have sent me stuff to review. If you want to order the same stuff so you can review along with me, then click through.

Top bicycling cities in Texas – San Antonio
by The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas
Hear “San Antonio”, and two things usually come to mind:  Riverwalk and Alamo.  True, they are the top two tourist attractions in Texas, but to really experience San Antonio, get on a bike, and explore…

If you happen to travel to San Antonio without your bike, no worries.   There are multiple options for the wheel-less rider.  This year, the Alamo City inaugurated B-cycle (http://sanantonio.bcycle.com/) , a bike rental system.  Automated kiosks are located at popular tourist attractions throughout the central city.  If you’re not a member of B-cycle, simply swipe a credit card, purchase a 24 hour membership for $10 (7 day [$24] and annual [$60] memberships can be purchased online), select your bike, and the dock will unlock your ride.  A quick seat…

A heavier long sleeve jersey and more sunshine – December 2nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 2, 2011 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2011

A heavier long sleeve jersey and more sunshine were what I needed for today’s ride. When I left home the temperature on my weather station was 74 degrees but it didn’t take long to realize that in the shade is was several degrees cooler and cooler places. The 10 to 13 mph southeast breeze added to the coolness even though the sky was clear and the sun bright. This is going to change tomorrow afternoon when rain and cold weather are supposed to arrive. After three rides with my mountain bike I figured it was time to be back on my road bike. I rode to Huffman and back for a total of 29.53 miles at an average speed of 15.8 mph and a max speed of 23.7 mph. The return portion was aided by the tailwind breeze and an attempt to get back to meet a man about my roof. I was riding fast but he beat me there so I had to stop a couple of times to talk to him on my cellphone. After 2 days in December my miles are 47.86 and year to date I am at 5419.16 miles. At this rate I should be able to get to 200 miles or more for December. I hope to ride tomorrow but there are some chores I need to do as well.

NWCC to Sponsor MS-150 Team!
by Val Tiemann
Over the years, the most frequently asked question about our club has been: Why doesn’t NWCC sponsor an MS-150 team? Well, that day has finally come. Our board of directors has approved the formation of a team.

But first, let’s answer that question: The reason we haven’t formed a team is because MS-150 always occurs shortly after our own Bluebonnet Century (BBX). …

To wave or not to wave: is it even a question?
peopleforbikes.org
One morning earlier this fall, our president, Tim Blumenthal, arrived at the People for Bikes office with a new resolution. “I vow to say ‘hi’ to every other bike rider I pass on my way to work,” Tim declared. “Every bike ride should be a celebration.Tim Blumenthal I’m happy when I’m riding my bike. At the very least, I should muster a smile for the fellow riders I encounter. There’s no room for being smug.”

This idea of Tim’s got the rest of us thinking. Why should we acknowledge other bicyclists, and how should we do it? And what would it look like if every rider did this? …

I Have Posted Every Day For a While Now
by Justin         The Plano Cyclist

So, Like Cal Ripken, I don’t want to screw up my record. I’m going to throw up a relevant “Greatest Hits” type post – and link to my article on the NuVinci from earlier this year. The NuVinci is the hub I have finally finished installing on the Bloggipede. I haven’t ridden it yet, but can tell you that it looks awesome, and I am excited to get up on it. As anticipated, my…
