About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

In my mind I was singing Ho, Ho, Ho, it’s off to biking I go – December 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 1, 2011 by Rick AnkrumDecember 1, 2011

I was back on the trails today with my Motobecane 700HT mountain bike. In my mind I was singing Ho, Ho, Ho, it’s off to biking I go. This was keeping the ride in the holiday season. Needless to say it is not very wintery in southeast Texas though. The temperature was 70 degrees and when I started it was partly cloudy with a solid 18.4 mph southeast wind. By the time I finished the clouds had come together to block most of the sun but the temperature held steady. I was thinking yesterday that my suntan has to be fading since I have not been able to ride as much and many times I have had my leg warmers on.

The route ended up at 18.33 miles at an average speed of 12.9 mph. My max speed was 20.7 mph which is good considering I did not go down any hills. The average cadence was 79.7 RPM. I am continuing to feel the benefits of airing up the tires to 52 psi. I was able to keep a good pace over the whole route even when I was heading into that 18.4 mph wind. Year to date miles are now at 5389.63. My usual December miles vary between 120 to 240. This is a function of darkness and cold weather in the past but this year could be different since I can ride during the day when it is warmer and brighter. So I think I could get 300 miles in this last month of the year. If I can do that I could end up around 5,700 miles. I have never been that high before. With today’s ride I only have 282 miles to go.

San Antonio Greenway Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on December 1, 2011 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2011

I received this email from Jorge Tijerina (River City Bent Riders ) and wanted to it share with you:

“I read your story about the Salado Creek Greenway on your website. I often go to the Greenway meetings which are held once a month and ride on the Leon Creek Greenway about 2 to 3 times a week.  All of the greenways are 10 feet wide and have trail heads located on the trail to park your car.  The trail heads have portable restrooms and water fountains.  The greenways are patrolled by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Police Department. The Leon Creek Greenway has about 14 miles of trail to ride, walk or jog on.  The other Greenways we have are Salado Creek and River Median Creek Greenways. San Antonio is planning to expand the greenways throughout the city.  The Salado Creek Greenway trail will someday go through Fort Sam Houston Fort which would make about 16 miles long and the Median River Greenway will be connected to the Mission Trail making that trail the longest trail in the city. Someday the Leon Creek and Salado Creek Greenway will also be connected.  If you want to know more about the greenways go San Antonio Parks and Recreation website.  That website is http://www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/ . San Antonio was awarded the Bronze Award this past year for being a bike friendly city.  San Antonio is still working very hard to become more bike friendly city. …”

Click on the shop name on the right and the location will pop up on the map. Check it out.

Ride Report for Day 4 of the Rapha Turkey Takeoff Challenge on Strava – AKA “The Marauding Minivan”
Ready for Plan B
A Normal Guy’s Journey To Plant-Based Cyclist
November 27th, 2011
Readyforplanb.com ride report for Day 4 of the Rapha Turkey Takeoff Challenge on Strava.
On the final day of the Rapha Turkey Takeoff Challenge on Strava I was greeted with temps in the thirties and the wind blowing over twenty miles per hour.  With those winds Ben and I decided we would do a leisurely tour around Dallas and enjoy the ride rather than heading out to the country and just banging out the miles.  It turned out to be a great call.

We rolled down the Santa Fe Trail and cut through a very quiet down town, enjoying the wide open streets cutting through the high-rises.  The Christmas decorations were already up and the tourists were out by the Dealey Plaza.  Still, we both laughed at how amazing it…

I Bike Richardson – Mike Freiberger
by dickdavid
It’s time for another installment of the I Bike Richardson series, where we put a face on Richardson cyclists. We’d like to introduce, Mike Freiberger. He took the time to answer a few questions about biking. Enjoy:

How long have you been riding?
I moved to Allen in 2003 and wanted to bicycle commute to the Richardson office, but never could find a route I was comfortable riding.  In Spring 2007, I talked to a coworker (thanks Bob M!) here at the Verizon Richardson campus, and we sorted out a route for my bicycle commute.  Since January 2008, I’ve logged over 12,000 miles…

I’m a bit behind updating things around these parts, so here goes…Bike Friendly Richardson hosted their 3rd annual Black Friday Ride which was a nice alternative to getting creamed at your local Walmart. Winter Texan bikes almost 1,300 miles to get back to Valley
Zack Quaintance                The Monitor

As a child in Nebraska, Steve Vandenberg had 11 siblings and a mother who did not drive.

He pedaled all over Omaha. He rode to school, he biked to the store, hauling home small items for his immobile mother. Vandenberg, who is now 57, had inadvertently begun training for Sept. 29, 2011.

On that day, he left home on his bicycle. During the next 16 days, he pedaled 1,295 miles. He rode all the way from his front door in Omaha to his winter home in Edinburg, averaging about…

Ever fathomed riding your bike from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska? Us neither, but every June a group of UT students make the journey with the noble goal of raising money for cancer research. Traversing over 4500 miles over three months, 50 brave souls share information and give hope to towns throughout America and Canada while they ride. Tonight, the Texas 4000 for Cancer, a non-profit organization at UT, seeks to raise money for the cause with a quartet of excellent bands.

As In the Tour De BBQ Days, I’m Doing a Quick Check in today.
by Justin             The Plano Cyclist
I hope you have enjoyed the last two days of questionably good content in the blog, but I’m afraid that I have some bad news to report. I was injured in an epic bike battle over Thanksgiving weekend, and I hurt my wrist enough to prevent me from either riding or wrenching for a few more days. I had put some articles and reviews in the hopper, hoping to get ahead, but I ended up waiting for parts anyway, so I have come to a dead stop, bicycle wise.

I did sell my Suteki for my asking price (which was a bargain) to some happy cyclist that had just discovered “skinny tire vintage bikes”, moved to Uptown, and decided that he needed one. He told me that no matter what he looked at, he kept coming back to this bike – even…

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for November 29th

Texbiker.net Posted on November 29, 2011 by Rick AnkrumNovember 29, 2011

I don’t know about you but I am glad “black Friday” has passed. I have hype fatigue.

Black Friday a Boon for Some, Bust for Others
Bicycle Retailer & Industry News
NEW YORK, NY (BRAIN)—The record number of shoppers who turned out for Black Friday may have been encouraging to retailers overall, but bike shops contacted Monday by Bicycle Retailer reported mixed results for their sales promotions over the long holiday weekend.

Despite deep discounts on bikes and 2011 summer clothing, customer traffic was slow at Sid’s Bikes NYC’s Westside store, noted Alex Jacobson. Sid’s offered the first 25 customers $45 Giro winter riding gloves for $10, but even after extending the offer for the entire day a few pair remained at close of…

National Bike Summit March 20-22, 2012
League of American Bicyclists

The 2012 National Bike Summit is already setting records: 200 people have registered, which is more than double the number at the same point last year. Clearly, people understand how critical it is that every bike advocate is on Capitol Hill March 20-22, 2012 to have our voices heard and to save cycling in the Transportation Bill. What can you do in the mean time? You…

Cold Setting A Bicycle Frame
by Justin        The Plano Cyclist

Rob Sherlock from NuVinci dropped by the PC offices the other day to drop off a wheel (and some socks) for me to install on the Bloggipide. (Wheel for bicycle, socks for blogger.) On a side note, if my name was “Sherlock”, I would totally go by the nickname “No Shit”.

This blog doesn’t bring you here to hear my opinions on nicknames, you come here to look for the glaring grammatical errors that surround my bike prose – and presumably you want to know something about bikes. …
