About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Change of Plans for this Bike Ride – November 5th

Texbiker.net Posted on November 5, 2011 by Rick AnkrumNovember 5, 2011

My biking guidelines say to start riding into the wind when the wind is strong. Well today I was planning on riding to the north but as I was getting ready I took my usual snapshot of the weather conditions. The wind was 18 mph from the southeast with gusts to 25 mph. This made me change my plans and I took a route that was mostly to the south and east. Also I was thinking of riding 34 to 36 miles but while I was riding I was not quite as warm as I would like to be even though I had a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey on and no leg warmers or windbreaker jacket. So I ended up riding 29.76 miles. As long as the sun was out I was almost warm enough but the clouds start to move in with the southeast wind and the sun almost went away. Although the temperature was 72 when I started and 74 when I finished I was never really feeling warm. My bandana was soaked when I got home so I guess I was warmer than I thought.

I was surprised I was able to keep a strong pace with the wind coming at me. My average speed ended up at 15.5 mph and max speed was 22.7 mph. The max speed was with the tailwind. The average cadence was 81.0 RPM. At one point I checked my average speed and it was 15.8 mph but this was before I hit the section of the route with the stops. I am making progress on November mileage which is now 104.69. Year to date miles are 5088.19. Tomorrow the weather should a little warmer and maybe not so windy.

What’s up with the poll?
Austin Ridge Riders
by Laura Scagno

During the past year, there have been several mountain biking related accidents resulting in serious injuries. In several cases the rider involved was uninsured. This issue was the subject of discussion on BikeMojo with very interesting comments, feedback and ideas.

The Austin Ridge Riders is currently researching accident supplemental insurance options to include coverage provided by groups like IMBA and the USA Cycling Association. We would like to be able to provide some idea as to how many of our members and/or website registered users are uninsured. Please remember that I am not a professional pollster and we do not…

New BMX park ideal hangout for participants and spectators
by katiejo            Austin on Two Wheels

What makes riding your bicycle in Austin so special?

Nope, it’s not riding under the Congress bridge on Lady Bird Lake and inhaling the aroma of bat guano?

Maybe it’s cycling around downtown, and spotting a pseudo-life-size artisan painted cow?

Definitely the bike-able access to local farms and fresh produce specializes Austin from other major urban areas. There are centrally located farmers’ markets at least 3 days out of the week within 3 miles of my home. …
