About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I thought I was over dressed – November 4th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 4, 2011 by Rick AnkrumNovember 4, 2011

When I first pulled out the driveway on the ride I thought I was over dressed. I had a long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, windbreaker jacket and leg warmers and regular gloves. If I am warm before heating up from exercise I am over dressed. But once I started to hit the shade and some breeze I changed my mind. This was the right outfit for me. There was not a cloud in the sky and the wind was an easy 4.6 mph from the north. This was the result of the cold front that pushed through southeast Texas yesterday. I had to wait until after lunch for the temperature to get into the 60’s and it was 69 when I left for the ride. By the time I finished it was up to 70 degrees. Not much of a change. Last year I would not have been able to ride by the time I got home because the temperature would have dropped below the 60 degree cutoff. Nice to not have that problem now.

I saw two other bikers while I was out but only one passed me going the other direction. The other biker was behind me for a few blocks until I turned. The Huffman loop was 29.74 miles today with a good average speed of 15.5 mph. My max speed was 25.4 mph and the average cadence was 82.6 RPM. I suspect the cool weather inspired me to set this pace to keep the body heat flowing. November miles are now 74.93 so I only have 225 to reach my normal amount. Year to date miles are 5058.43.

The Explainer: When and if to sign that waiver
By Charles Pelkey        velonews.competitor.com
Q. Dear Explainer,
My experience is luckily past, but I was hit by a car a year-and-a-half ago. The driver was ticketed by the police, but I can’t quite remember what the ticket was. It did make it clear he was at fault. He was a working Joe that just wasn’t watching out for bikes.

I didn’t want to sue and he had the minimum amount of insurance. I had considerable hospital bills, and even though I had health insurance I wasn’t sure they would cover the bills. I felt like the driver’s insurance, and my health and car insurance were all trying to make sure they spent the least money possible. Since I wasn’t going to sue, lawyers weren’t interested in talking to me. In the end, my health insurance covered the bills and the driver’s insurance and mine did pay…

Additional Information

The Tradition Returns
For several years, new friends and old friends have been joining me for a nice bike ride in the country – with some black-eyed peas and cornbread for dessert. This year we are bringing back our same traditional riding and eating experience, with a bit of a twist or two.

Just what kind of ride is this?
We should make it clear that this is not a big time bike rally with a full blown production behind it. This is a simple ride, more like a glorified club ride. We have nice routes with break points that are stocked with fluids and snacks. We have a few friendly volunteers to help take care of you on the road, and some even nicer ones who have cooked black-eyed peas and cornbread for you to enjoy after the ride. My Mom will even be there to make you feel at home. So come on out and join us for a pleasant ride to give the new year a healthy start.
