Chris Tucker Rides His First Charity Ride
On November 12, 2011 I am cycling in Wounded Warrior Project’s (WWP) Soldier Ride San Antonio. It is my personal goal to raise funds to support our wounded servicemen and women of our nation’s armed forces, and you can help me reach this goal! You can sponsor me by clicking on the website listed below.
It will be my first charity ride. Should things go off well I plan on doing Tour de Cure in May, hopefully with the other cyclists from my hospital who have expressed an interest. Since diabetes was a primary cause of my brother’s death last year I figure I should do more to end this dreaded disease.

Six Key Bike Measurements: Park Tool Positioning Charts and Tutorials
by Eric Bowen         BikFit Blog
Every cyclist should have some of their key bike measurements recorded. Without this information it’s going to be difficult to get your position dialed in should any of the following apply:
You travel, pack your bike, and need to build it up again.
Something comes loose and slips, usually the seatpost or handlebars
You have work done at a shop, and they accidentally change something
You install a new stem, seatpost, saddle, and/or handlebars
You want to duplicate your position on another bike
You want to test ride a bike and get your position close to your current bike…
Teen bicyclist killed in north Houston
Houston Chronicle News
A 16-year-old bicyclist was killed after being hit by a truck in north Houston Wednesday morning. The collision occurred in the 1000 block of Greens near W. Hardy about 10 a.m., according the Houston Police Department. Police said the teen, whose name has not been released, was rushed to Memorial Hermann Northwest hospital. HPD confirmed her death later Wednesday. The truck was eastbound on Greens when the teen, westbound on the sidewalk, darted into traffic, police said. Two cars avoided hitting the girl, but the truck struck her. The bicyclist appears to be at fault, police said. …

Tour Das Hugel … A voyage of transformation, and pain (Part III)
by robdamico         Austin on Two Wheels
This is the third part of Rob D’Amico’s series looking at Tour Das Hugel and his attempt to do the 2011 ride. See here for Part I. He also is hosting a fundraiser that lets you donate a set amount for each mile he completes, with all proceeds going to local bike nonprofits.
About Me: Part II
I’ve managed to lose an entire pound more for a total of eight pounds shed. And with the ride day being Saturday and no big training days left, I’d say that I’m going to have to be happy with eight or nine pounds lost overall. Oh well, that’s all the less to haul all day. …
Welcome Bike Friendly Cedars
by dickdavid      Bike Friendly Richardson
There’s a new bike friendly group in Dallas called Bike Friendly Cedars. You can find them on Facebook for now.
Here’s their description:
“Bike Friendly Cedars is about cycling, but we’re more about community. We’re about putting together events to entice folks to spend more time in the Cedars, rather than just rushing through. Cruise around the neighborhood at 10 mph, and see what, and more importantly who you’ve been missing.†…
Ice Biking: A Dangerous Sport
By Jim Arnold, Yahoo! Contributor Network
I do not recall seeing snow before the age of 6. Since that age, I have become rather intimately familiar with the substance. However, in Austin, snow is infrequent to say the least. Therefore, on any occasion when it does happen to snow or ice over, the town goes absolutely crazy and shuts down. Schools cancel classes for any amount of fallen snow or ice on the road, simply because the locals do not know how to interact with this foreign substance.
Driving becomes rather dangerous for several reasons. First, people do not know how to use defrost in their car. Why would we? It’s Texas. Second, people do not alter their speed while in driving in their vehicles. It’s a good rule of thumb to slow down considerably when roads are iced over. But if there is a speed limit, many Texans…
Bike Nazis at the Texas Medical Center
By Steve Jansen    Houston Press

ARGH! DON’T YOU DARE PARK YOUR BIKE AT THE TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER OR ELSE!
?Before going to the office this morning, I cycled over to the Texas Medical Center to visit Chris Gray, the Press’s whiz-bang music editor who is recovering from an apparent heart attack. I greatly enjoyed sharing laughs with Chris during my visit, which lasted about 20 minutes. (He’s doing much better, by the way.)
When I returned to my bicycle, somebody had played a joke on me. Or so I thought. …
Former Batavia man bikes California to Florida at 62
Cyclist also raises $7,500 for cancer during cross-country trip
By Elena Ferrarin         www.dailyherald.com
Robert Marincic completed Monday a nearly 2,700-mile solo bicycle trip from California to Florida to raise funds for the American Cancer Society much faster than he anticipated.
It took the former Batavia resident just 41 days, including a two-day stop in Carrollton, Texas, where his wife met him for a visit halfway through the trip. He thought he’d be on the road for seven full weeks, he said. …
Life suck? Blame mountain biking
A friend of a friend has a blog. Here is his most resent post:

X axis = income, Y axis = you’re ****ed now
The late-2000’s recession, sometimes referred to as the Great Recession, Lesser Depression, Long Recession, or **** Honey We’re Broke Decade, is a severe ongoing global economic problem that began in March 2004 when President George W. Bush took up mountain biking. The economy took a particularly sharp nosedive in September 2008 as the cumulative effects of the president’s obsession with cycling caused him to completely ignore his obligations to the nation and, in effect, pedal the economy off a cliff.
The Great Recession has affected the entire world economy, with higher detriment in some countries than others. It is a major global recession characterized by the various systemic imbalances that are all too familiar to the spouses of avid cyclists, i.e., declining wages and increased…
1987 Schwinn High Sierra
by Justin      The Plano Cyclist

I said I would do it, and here it is; a post about my 1987 Schwinn High Sierra. This bike has gone through a couple of changes since the last full picture I put up, so I wanted give you a look at it in it’s completed form. The High Sierra frame is custom butted tri-caliber tubing, finished in a gorgeous (and rare) “black chrome” color. There aren’t many bikes this color out there, and this one is done very well. In fact, the process is actually illegal to do now…
Riding in the Dirt and on the Trails – November 2nd Bike Ride
After writing about my mountain bike yesterday I decided today I would ride my Motobecane 700HT MTB instead of my road bike. Also I was suffering from some stomach distress so I thought riding 15 to 20 miles away from home may not be wise. So I hit the greenbelt trails and dirt trail beside the drainage bayou. There is definitely something different about riding in the dirt and trails versus on the road. First is the knobby tires. Rolling resistance is much higher plus bouncing over a rough dirt surface takes a toll on the arms and shoulders. Even though I only rode 15.6 miles I felt like I had rode 29 or more. I suppose the 14 mph wind (23 mph gusts) did not help much when I was out in the open but the trees did not shelter me from the wind that much.
Before I started riding I wanted to get the Garmin Edge 500 to pickup the cadence/speed sensor signal. I adjusted the position of the magnets but still was not getting it to register. Then I went into the settings and started messing around until I found the “rescan” function and the sensor was back to life. I forgot that I needed to rescan when I change bikes. Now I will need to rescan when I go back to the road bike.
Earlier in the week I said I wanted the warm weather back. Well for at least one day I got my wish. It was 80 degrees when I started and 83 at the finish. The skies were mostly cloudy and I already mentioned the wind. Tonight or tomorrow the temperature will drop again. I probably will not ride tomorrow because the temperature will be low and in the afternoon I am going to downtown Houston for the Platts Gas Houston Forum (for my other blog 3MailAt.com ). I plan on riding the Metro bus to save on parking and Jeep Wrangler wear and tear.
Since I was riding my MTB my average speed dropped to 11.3 mph and the max speed was 21.8 mph (going down a nice hill). My average cadence was 72.7 RPM which is higher than I thought due to low gearing. November miles are a whopping 45.19 and year to date miles are 5028.69. Based on my typical November mileage being 300 I am already 15% of the way there with only two days gone.

Shimano Deore DX And Rarity
by Justin      The Plano Cyclist
I love rare things – but I never finished college, so I will never be able to afford to buy the rare things that anyone else wants. Therefore, I have to work very hard to discover what is rare, worthwhile, and inexpensive. Once I acquire those things, I have to work even harder to make people know just how rare they are by writing a blog post about them. You thought you were hardcore with your hobbies? Pfffft.
Thankfully, bicycle components meet all of my criteria above, and today I’m going to tell you a little about one of Shimano’s mountain bike lines, Deore DX. Shimano’s top of the line system was Deore XT, and DX was the step below that from 1990-1993. I’ve tried to find the…
Cycling – Ride to Walden Planation for Lunch
by donbynum            Don Bynum’s Blog

On October 26th, John Chalmers and I decided to ride from Lake Buchanan over to Walden Plantation, a really nice Bed & Breakfast that also has a grill and does gourmet burgers at lunch. It is a good thing that it is a 55 mile round trip. The 4,500 calories that Garmin thinks I burned on this ride might, maybe, offset the calories supplied by the burger, fries, sweet tea and Pecan Pie Muffins (oh! those…

Cyclist says car accident won’t stop him
By VIMAL PATELÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Theeagle.com
World-traveling bicyclist Hans Frischeisen, 70, recuperates at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan on Monday after his cross-country journey was put on hold. He was in an accident in Brazos County on Friday while riding on the shoulder of Texas 21 East.

A man who has biked in several dozen countries over two decades, including brutal hotspots like the Sudan, says he never had an accident — until a recent crash on Texas 21 broke his arm and injured his leg.
But Hans Frischeisen said Monday, three days after the incident, that he plans to recover and continue his neverending journey of traveling the world that began after he retired as a sales rep from IBM in 1990. …
SAVE THE ANTHILLS

Postby rafdog (read the complete thread for more information)
As some of you know or may have heard, the county has been developing a plan to solve flooding issues that involves building retention basins along the bayou from the dam down to the beltway. The basins will result in large areas of the south side of the bayou clear-cut and dug out, eliminating existing trials and forest. Although the proposal seems…

October 22 – 28: College Station TX to Leesville LA

Well, we’ve officially had our first week on the road bicycling from Texas to Florida… kind of. I say “kind of†because, although we set out on Saturday, October 15th, we had a week long setback which brought us back to College Station until the following Saturday.
Failure to Launch
When we initially rolled out we were joined by one of Jason’s college friends, Mikey, who camped with us the first night in Richards TX and headed back the next morning. The first and second days were short (~30…
