About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for October 27th

Federal bike funding under attack again
Tim Blumenthal        Director, Peopleforbikes.org
Last month, we asked you to contact your U.S. Senators to oppose Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn’s plan to strip funding from the Transportation Enhancements program, which is the main source of the federal investment for bike projects of all types. Peopleforbikes.org supporters and our allies generated more than 75,000 emails to Congress in 48 hours. This rapid and powerful grassroots response succeeded: Mr. Coburn withdrew his…

Pioneer PotterNavi: a 3G bike GPS that encourages you to meander
By Daniel Cooper          www.engadget.com

A GPS that encourages meandering won’t be the dish of the day (month, or year) for hypermilers, but might do well in the slightly more genteel world of cycling. Pioneer’s PotterNavi sits on the handlebars of your velocipede and can let you decide between straight or scenic routes. The 100 gram device packs a 2.4-inch 240 x 320 LCD screen and fortunate Japanese buyers get two years of 3G data for free, courtesy…

Generally I do not include news about electric bicycles since I am a purist but this one looks so much like the people powered bike that I had to.

Grace One City e-motorbike review
By Tim Stevens             www.engadget.com

There comes a time in nearly every person’s life when they need to get up, get out the door and get to work. Some drive, some walk, some take one form of public transportation or another — but a noble few do something different. Those people ride their bikes, holding on to the passion gained in a childhood of…

Everyone who rides for very long will have an encounter with a vehicle in some manner. Hopefully it is not tragic but there things you need to know.

How to Handle a Bike Accident With a Vehicle
By Ryan Wood            Active.com
John Duggan was riding along the left side of a lane of vehicles stopped in a traffic jam, when a car pulled out from the lane to make a U-turn right in front of him. The car smacked right into Duggan’s bike, sending him flying.

At the time, Duggan didn’t think he was injured, and he wasn’t sure who was at fault. So both he and the driver mutually agreed to go their…

Trek Recalling 27,000 Bikes
Bicycle Retailer & Industry News
WASHINGTON, D.C. (BRAIN)—The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Trek, has issued a voluntary recall of about 27,000 FX and District bikes from the 2012 model year.

The bolt that secures the seat saddle clamp to the seat post can break posing a fall hazard.

Trek has received four reports of incidents with one injury involving a broken tooth and lip injury.

The bicycles affected by this recall include the following models: …

Spreading The Word About Pedal Power – A North Texas Bike Charity
by dickdavid            Bike Friendly Richardson

When we were at the Bike Friendly Oak Cliff, Richardson Bike Mart Cyclesomatic Bicycle Fair last weekend, we discovered a great bicycle charity called Pedal Power. Based out of Mansfield, Texas, Pedal Power is a division of Mansfield Bike Charity, a non-profit organization dedicated to refurbishing and redistributing used bikes. Their bikes benefit kids and adults in need of transportation to school and work, and provide increased…

TAMUG grad bikes 4,000 miles for cancer
By Bronwyn Turner        galvestondailynews.com

GALVESTON — Sam Davenport, of Galveston, never had attempted a long-distance bike ride when he set out alone on a fundraiser earlier this year.

Some 4,000 miles later, he raised $5,000 to donate to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, as well as $10,000 for families with children battling cancer.

He biked from 30 to 130 miles a day, losing 10 pounds and gaining a rubber-meets-the-road message. …

Missoni For Target Bicycle – Completed, With My Thoughts.
by Justin            The Plano Cyclist

Since my blog is now steadily making about two cents a day from clicks on the ads (retirement, here I come) I thought I ‘d give you two of my own since I completed the Missoni for Target “build”. The bike itself is a solid machine, though it came out of the box with a few dings; the fender had a small ding, and the basket had a cut in the rubber it was dipped in. The paint on the bike is solid, and very attractive. However, there is a seam in the…

Social Riding Dirty.
by Justin        The Plano Cyclist
On Saturday the 22nd, there was a bike friendly ride through Ray Charles’ South Dallas. I wasn’t aware that Ray Charles rode bicycles, nor that he lived in Dallas, so I was intrigued by the ride and wanted to go. The stars aligned and I was able to hook up with Hubbard and Curnutt and do a little South Dallas slow riding with Jason Roberts and a bunch of other…

Fourth Day in a Row of 29 miles or More – October 27th

Texbiker.net Posted on October 27, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 27, 2011

I wanted to start the ride earlier today because the weather is supposed to change later in the day. As I write this at 2:10 PM the wind has shifted to the northwest. During the ride it was generally from the south and southeast. Because I started at 10:29 AM the temperatures were lower than they have this week: 73 at the start and 80 at the end. The 7 mph variable light wind was not a problem for the ride but I decided not to use the 50 x 15 gears because about the time I was going to shift into it the wind would turn into a headwind. The mostly cloudy skies had a few dark ones to the north as I rode the last 3 or 4 miles and I was wondering if I was going to get wet but it did not happen even though we sure could use the rain.

As I neared the intersection of Old Atascocita Road and FM2100 I could see another biker about 300 yards east of FM2100 but I turned onto FM2100 north before he could reach me. Most bikers take Old Atascocita Road west to FM960. I prefer not to do that because you have to get across FM1960 without the aid of a traffic light. FM2100 at FM1960 has a traffic light.

Today’s 29.69 miles is the fourth day in a row of 29 miles or more. My average speed was 15.4 mph and max speed was 21.4 mph and average cadence was 82.4 RPM, 1.1 RPM over yesterday. October miles are now 654.49, this week is 117.78 miles and year to date is 4895.82 miles.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for October 26th

Retired BMX Rider Launches Fairdale
from Bicycle Retailer & Industry News
AUSTIN, TX (BRAIN)—It’s not unusual that retired BMX rider Taj Mihelich launched a new bicycle company. But what is of note is that Fairdale isn’t a BMX company, selling instead road/commuter bikes.

“I always wanted to do commuter bikes,” Mihelich said.

What forced Mihelich’s hand was a debilitating back injury that not only ended his BMX career a few years back, but also ended his BMX riding days in general. “It just made sense that I would sell bikes that I could ride,” he said. …

Dallas Bike to City Hall Day
by tracypop        Dallas Cycle Chic
We participated in Bike to City Hall day this morning.  Individuals rode in from different parts of Dallas, and groups of people rode in with organzied (and safer) rides with Bike Friendly Oak Cliff  and Bike Friendly Knox Henderson.  Union Station was the meeting point.

Once we gathered at Union Station,  we all went as a big group  at 8:00 am to the front of City Hall for a press conference of sorts where Mayor Rawlings, Council members Delia Jasso and Scott Griggs, and Max the “Bike Czar” (great unofficial title!) discussed the continuing efforts to implement the recently approved Bike plan.  All…

Pedal for Puppies follows dog head-shaped route
By Pam LeBlanc            Fit City
Put this one down in the annals of puppy-loving wackiness: An urban fund-raising bicycle ride that follows a route shaped roughly like a puppy’s head.

Yes, it’s true. Pedal for Puppies, a benefit for Austin Pets Alive!, will host the 25K ride starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, from Austin Subaru, 200 W. Huntland Drive. …

Use at your own risk: McAllister Park crosswalk a concern for TxDot and pedestrians
by Joe Conger / KENS 5 (video)
SAN ANTONIO –Lorena Cadena and Marie Sabota just ran the gauntlet: making a quick sprint through a crosswalk while traffic streamed by at 60 miles an hour.

“Vehicles fly through here,” said Laura Matthews. Matthews, a cyclist herself, watched the pair from a safe distance as the bikers completed a ride within…

Mayor Mike Rawlings peddles city bike plan with promotional ride to Dallas City Hall
By NATALIE POSGATE            by Dallas Morning News (subscription)
Mayor Mike Rawlings ditched his suit for a T-shirt and shorts Wednesday morning in an effort to make Dallas more bicycle-friendly.

“We’ve got to be a bike-able city,” the mayor said after joining other city officials and biking enthusiasts for a short ride from Union Station to City Hall. “We…

Livable Centers help create livable future
JEFF TAEBEL H-GAC Regional View
I’ve been thinking about Livable Centers a lot lately. The H-GAC Livable Centers Program helps communities create places where people can live, work and play without needing a car to get around.

I know some may be skeptical that walking or bicycling will ever be a significant part of how we get around in the Houston region. But think about places like Downtown Houston, the Texas Medical Center, or the campus of…

Coloradan cycles to Houston from Canada by way of Rapid City
Kevin Woster Journal staff        Rapid City Journal

An opponent of a Canadian oil pipeline proposal to cross South Dakota en route to refineries in Texas pedaled into Rapid City Tuesday with a gusty breeze and emotional message: stop Keystone XL.

Tom Weis, a green-energy activist from Boulder, Colo., began his journey on a tube-shaped, space-age-looking recumbent bicycle on the other side of the Canadian border two weeks ago.

He figures to be in the Houston area in about seven…

Ride Recap @ White Rock Lake 10/25/2011
by Shawn        Texas Mountain Bike Trails
I beat the sun tonight for a fast 14 miles at Dallas White Rock Lake located just east of downtown Dallas and only 1 mile from Amanda and I’s current apartment. It was perfect weather, I mean perfect. The gnats and bugs down by the lake weren’t much fun to ride through, and there is one section of the lake that stinks like hell because…

Warm Before The Cold Arrives – October 26th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 26, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 26, 2011

Today was the third in a row riding over 29 miles with 29.76 miles today. Week to date I am at 88.09 miles. Tomorrow’s weather is unknown for now so I may not get to ride or have a shorter ride than so far this week. The weather does not look like there will be a change tomorrow with the temperature at 83 degrees (start) and 86 degrees (finish). Mostly cloudy skies with a couple of darker clouds but no rain where I was biking. Wind was an issue today with gusts at 16 mph from the south. I did not ride in the 50 x 15 gear combination today because there did not seem to be a place long enough to take advantage of it. October mileage is now 624.80 and year to date is 4866.13 miles.

My 15.4 mph average speed dropped some probably because I did not ride in the larger gears. My max speed was 20.4 mph and average cadence 81.3 RPM.
