About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

4 R’s for Today’s Ride – October 24th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2011

The breakout of the 4 R’s:

  • Rested legs
  • Right weather
  • Right bike
  • Right route

After resting my tired muscles yesterday today my legs felt strong and I was able to keep a strong pace. At the 25 mile mark my average speed was 16.1 mph. The first 5 miles was my usual sub-15 mph average speed because of the stops and starts while I get to the more open road. But starting there my average speed picked up. My average cadence was 82.6 RPM which also reflected my ability to keep a solid pace as well.

The weather was right because the wind was coming from the west which helped to get the average speed up before turning back into when my speed would drop down some. With the speed built up I had some cushion to absorb the wind slowing. The mostly cloudy skies kept the temperature to a nice 80 degrees at the start and 88 degrees at the finish. I also was able to use the different gear combination (50 x 15) that I used on Friday to help for awhile but going into the 6 mph west wind was a little too much so I changed to my normal 43 x 12 for the ride back home. There is a cold front supposed to arrive sometime on Thursday so I may not have weather like today for several days after Thursday.

Right bike is a reach to fit the 4 R’s but I truly enjoy my road bike. The ride is comfortable and the saddle is in the correct position. Since I have changed from the Look Keo pedals to the Ultegra 6700 pedals my feet are much more comfortable.

Traffic and road layout was conducive for the ride today with the stretches between traffic stops and the lack of vehicle traffic getting in the way. Twice I had vehicles let me cross the road rather than have to wait for it to clear. I rode 29.1 miles today with a couple of small adjustments to the route. October miles are 565.80 and year to date miles are 4807.14.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for October 23rd

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2011

My oldest daughter forwarded this article to me from a writer, Bruce Weber, with the New York Times. Bruce recounts his second bike ride across the United States. This story does not have a direct Texas aspect but it is something I have wanted to do. There are probably many bikers out there with this dream. Bruce made it a reality not once but twice. Read his story to see his perspective on time and miles. Being 59+5 myself I can identify with the mortality of one. The scenery in the picture below is gorgeous and the fall setting is Americana. There are more photos at the full article link.

A Man, a Bike and 4,100 Miles

The author in October on the Great Allegheny Passage in Pennsylvania.
By BRUCE WEBER        The New York Times
IF you can be said to be hurrying on a cross-country bicycle trip, for about two weeks I hurried to Pittsburgh. I pushed through some dreary weather in Michigan and Ohio, climbed the roller-coaster foothills of the Appalachians and battled traffic and chewed up roads as I entered the city. From there, though, with the end of a ride that began almost three months ago looming, I slowed down and started on an oblique route home. …

Texas Big Cats for the Heart of Texas (HOT) Recumbent Rally
The Speed Ride route planning has been put on hold due to the awful Texas drought. Our Scout reports that the routes he has been looking at are cracking really bad — would cause major damage to ties and wheels. So we are going to have to wait until closer to the HOT to map out a safe route — see what roads are safe and also see what roads will be under construction to repair the damage. Sorry we cannot have the route posted for you to see, but we want this to be a safe ride.

Cycling – New friends met through the blog
by donbynum            Don Bynum’s Blog
A couple of weeks back, I received a comment on the blog from a woman in Wisconsin.  A google search about cycling in this area had led her to my humble blog.  She and her husband were coming to a family reunion in the our area in a few days and wanted to do some cycling while here.  Beth Peterson and her husband Pat are avid tandem bike riders and go to tandem rallies all over the country when they can get away.  The reunion they were coming for was going to…

12th Fredericksburg Fall Foliage Frolic
The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas
…We were lucky enough to be granted an interview with Nolan Kuehn of Fredericksburg Fall Foliage Frolic to ask some questions about their upcoming ride.

Why Join the Fredericksburg Fall Foliage Frolic (FFFF)?

It’s an opportunity to participate in a ride that’s laid back (no mass start), it traverses some of the most scenic roads in the Texas Hill Country, there’s something for everyone, and a post-ride meal is included.

How long has the event been around and how did it start? …

Abilene firefighters best police in battle of speed, strength, stamina
Firefighters best police in annual contest
By Brennan K. Peel             Abilene Reporter-News
This year the Hoses have it.

Abilene firefighters wrested the title from Abilene police officers Saturday during the fourth annual Guns N’ Hoses, which pits the departments in contests of strength and speed.

The event is held in tandem with the Bent Wheel Bash bike races Saturday and today at Buck Creek trails.

The Guns N’ Hoses competition and bike races serve as fundraisers for Abilene Police Department’s bike unit, said police Lt. Joe Tauer, supervisor of the unit. Money…

Wounded Fort Hood Soldiers ride their way to recovery
By: Chie Saito            austin.ynn.com (video)
Physical training may be challenging for soldiers wounded in combat or those battling illness. But that does not stop a number of Fort Hood soldiers from taking advantage of alternative opportunities which help get them outdoors and into gear.

All participating soldiers are part of Fort Hood’s Warrior Transition Brigade, a program dedicated to giving wounded or ill soldiers the time needed to focus on treatment. The troops are then transitioned into civilian life or back into active duty. …

Cyclosomatic Gallery – Ray Charles Ride
by Christopher Curnutt        Biking in Dallas

On Saturday we joined the “Hit the Road Jack” historic ride through south Dallas of Ray Charles. We visited Ray Charles’ house in South Dallas, the historic Oakland Cemetery where some of the city’s most renowned leaders are buried, the Cedar Crest Better Bridge demonstration.  The photos from the  Blues/Bandits & BBQ festival will come in the next post.

These are just a few examples of the interesting things you might see, and cool people you might meet, if you’re Biking in Dallas. …

Today was the inaugural Oak Cliff Chicken Coop Snoop, and a group of us biked the tour of really cool local backyards. Some of the riders were…

On the path to bicycle safety
Opening of Leon Creek Greenway segment another step toward ‘emerald necklace.’
TRACY IDELL HAMILTON, Express-News        www.mysanantonio.com
Mike Kubena makes the 26-mile round trip on the Leon Creek Greenway at least twice a week.

He rides his Bianchi road bike along paved paths that border the creek, under mature, shady oaks, and away from deadly traffic.

“It’s so nice not to have to worry about cars,” the recently retired San Antonio police officer said Friday morning at the dedication of the latest completed stretch of the greenway, from Bandera Road to VIA’s Ingram Road…

Street project gaining ground
City working to smooth out plans for additional bicycle, pedestrian paths
By Lowell Brown / Staff Writer        www.dentonrc.com
A plan to better connect Denton through bicycle and pedestrian paths is inching toward approval at City Hall.

The plan got its first airing before the full City Council on Tuesday, and no major roadblocks emerged. It now heads to the Planning and Zoning Commission for review before an expected council vote early next year.

The plan takes stock of existing conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians, suggests roadway design standards and offers short- and long-term goals for adding more bike lanes and other…
