About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The Best NAHBS Purchase I Made
by Justin        The Plano Cyclist

Early in the year, I built up my trip to the North American Handbuilt Bicycle show in Austin, but never really wrote anything about it; mostly because when I finished my time at the show I had a sad family errand to run and the show was kind of pushed out of my mind. However, I ended up finding my pictures the other day, and I…

Cooler with an 18 MPH Headwind – October 19th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 19, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 19, 2011

55 degrees at 7:00 AM was not quite as low as the weatherman was forecasting but it was below my cutoff point of 60 degrees if I was to ride at that time of day. On top of that the wind was blowing around a lot for that time of the day with my home weather station wind gauge jumping to 6 mph at times. This is a high number due to the trees and houses surrounding it. So I figured today’s ride would have to be an afternoon one which it turned out to be. I left at 1:40 PM and by then the temperature had climbed up to about 72 degrees but the wind was a stiff 18 mph from the NW. I decided I better ride into the wind for the first part of the ride so that I could have a tailwind on the return ride. After I started I altered my route to staying on US59 and heading north rather than going to the west into the wind. This was a wise choice because riding into the wind was an ordeal. My average speed until the turnaround was about 14 mph so I had to ride fast to end up at my 15.3 mph average at the end. As you can see below there is a disagreement on my max speed in the two ride recaps but only .1 mph. My average cadence over the 29.14 mile route was 81.3 RPM.

With the wind I dressed for the chill with a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey over top, regular gloves and no leg warmers. This was perfect. Riding into the wind provided body heat to offset the wind chill.

October miles are now up to 449.75 and year to date I have rode 4691.09 miles. The weather is supposed to warmup by the weekend and the wind should die down by Friday.

To Helmet OR Not to Helmet?
by katiejo        Austin on Two Wheels
Through riding my bicycle I’ve met some of the coolest people I know. Although the two aren’t mutually exclusive, riding a bicycle and being cool. Maybe if riding a bicycle and cool were connected exclusively then helmet and bicycle would form together in a single thought bubble above riders’ heads at the thought of pedaling two wheels. I’ve felt a smidge of drool on my lip when I look…

I can’t believe it, I have been happily CAR FREE for TWENTY MONTHS now!!  It has been a unique experience and I feel fortunate to have a lifestyle conducive to this bohemian adventure—but it hasn’t been entirely without consequence. I am a Brooks saddle guy  – I know that paints a picture in your head of a fussy old dude with a beard, but I don’t always have a beard…

I’m also a guy that reads lots of blogs – the other day, on Rat Trap Press there was a post about work space cleanup. While that doesn’t sound particularly exciting, there was a picture in the post that made my heart race. For the past few weeks, I have been cruising eBay and various bicycle parts websites halfheartedly searching for a red…

Cool Front Blows In, Mountain Bike Out – October 18th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 18, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 18, 2011

The weather changed during the early morning with a cool front blowing in. I decided this would be a good time to ride my Motobecane 700HT mountain bike. It was 68 degrees when I first checked this morning and by the time I started my ride at 9:51 it had went to 64 degrees. The wind was a strong 11 mph to 15 mph but this did not seem to be as strong in the woods I was riding in. The sky was that clear blue again.

Riding a mountain bike is different from my road bike in several ways: not as fast, some different muscles used, I use my arm strength more. I noticed my lower back muscles were complaining about the effort.

I rode mostly on greenbelt trails with occasional street crossings. There were numerous people walking and jogging on the trails. I passed three HPD bike patrol officers. One of them was riding without his helmet strap fastened. Some people were bundled up and some were not. I was bundled some with a long sleeve jersey, leg warmers and windbreaker. I almost wore full finger gloves but changed my mind. That was good move because it wasn’t that cool.
