About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Why do you do what you do?
by Gil Jones        Musings of Captain Justice
…Why I do in recreation what I do is more complex — perhaps complicated in part by having more than a couple of hobbies and endeavors that I enjoy. For purposes of this analysis I think the cycling is the hardest to explain. Put the question in the context of today’s 40 mile ride and the question becomes more difficult.

At about the 32 mile point we were on the Old Spicewood Rd (Old Blanco Rd if you are coming from Spicewood)…

CS Hike & Bike Loop Helps Residents Move Across Town
Reporter: Michael Oder            www.kbtx.com
The newest addition to College Station’s hike and bike paths is the section that cuts through Bee Creek Park. The connection there at Bee Creek Park allows residents to get from one side of College Station to the other.

Some residents use the bike paths for recreation and others to get to and from school and work.

There are a lot of bikes in College Station, many of them thanks to Texas A&M. At one point, it was reported that more than…

Local Perspective
by John Willis        National League of Cities
When people use public transportation infrastructure, whether by walking on a sidewalk, driving a car, riding a bus, catching a train or pedaling a bicycle, they have a destination in mind. The public investment in transportation connects where people are with where they want to go, and how they want to get there.

One of the neighborhood leaders in my Garland, Texas, city council district is an avid and safe bicyclist. He rides his bicycle everywhere he can, and often brings up ideas to help make…

Jagoe recently reopened to traffic featuring a wider sidewalk, bicycle signs and shared-lane arrows, or “sharrows,” while keeping vehicle parking on both sides of the two-lane street. The street design is one…

Not Quite 200 for the Week – October 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 16, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 16, 2011

After yesterday’s rear tire problem stopping my ride short on the planned route I was hoping I could still get over 200 miles for the week but it did not happen. I added some to today’s route but it wasn’t enough and the week’s miles ended up at 196.82. While I can be sad this is still a very nice week total compared to what I averaged prior to retiring: 150 miles. Today I rode 26.09 miles with an average speed of 14.8 mph (15.0 mph on RideWithGPS.com) and a max speed of 21.5 mph. The average cadence was 80.4 RPM. Year to date miles are 4648.30.

The weather continues to be fabulous with 86 degrees at the finish of the ride. Wind was almost calm with just enough to help feel cool. The clouds are scattered with small puffs here and there. The blue that showed through was the same brilliant color.

My new rear tire performed as expected and no flats or other problems. In my attempt to be prepared I ordered two new Continental Gatorskin tires and 5 spare tubes. I hope I don’t have to use any of these any time soon. I ordered the 25mm wide tires because there has been some talk about the wider tire being more comfortable and can be inflated to a lower pressure.

Forte Single Speed Conversion Kit Review
from The Plano Cyclist

A couple of years ago, my brother asked me if I had a “spare” bicycle for him to ride to the gym. Asking if I have a spare bike is like asking a smoker if they have an “extra” cigarette – of course not. However, I had some extra parts, and after sending him out to purchase a Forte single speed conversion kit, I built a modern Fuju Ace road frame into a simple bike he could ride to the gym. When I built the…
