About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The clear blue sky had a depth that did not end – October 3rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 3, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 3, 2011

Looking through my sunglasses the clear blue sky had a depth that did not end. The horizon just floated beyond my sight. That was what it seemed like during today’s ride. The temperature continues to be mild at 78 degrees (32% humidity) when I started and 87 degrees (23% humidity) when I ended. It was 56 degrees at 7:15AM so fall is definitely in the making. The wind was a light 4 mph from the east but it seemed stronger when I was going into it. This is when you understand the geometric increase of wind resistance.

The start was a little later than what I planned (11:58 AM) because I was working on another website I have (3mailat.com). I will be releasing an ebook in the next day or so at Amazon.com and I need to have that website up to date to support it.

Today’s route was 29.44 miles long. I managed to get my average speed to 15.4 mph (SportTracks says 15.3 mph) with a max speed of 21.4 mph. The average cadence was over 80 at 80.4 RPM which is better than I thought it would be with the headwind I was in at times. I did not see any other bikers along the route. October miles are now 54.67 after two days of biking. Year to date miles stand at 4296.01. the total miles for last week was 154.52 without any rides over 30 miles and not riding on Saturday. Before I retired the miles would have been less because of the declining daylight in the evening.

Easy Street Recumbents and Texas Big Cats for the Heart of Texas (HOT) Recumbent Rally
The Warriors Ride route planning has been put on hold due to the awful Texas drought. Our Scout reports that the routes he has been looking at are cracking really bad — would cause major damage to ties and wheels. So we are going to have to wait until closer to the HOT to map out a safe route — see what…

Schwinn Madison Review
by Christopher Curnutt        Biking In Dallas

In 1985 Schwinn introduced a sport bike that they named after “Madison” racing which is a team track racing event that originated at Madison Square Garden in New York.  Schwinn Madisons of that era were well made and competitive yet  they only produced them for a few years.  Today they’re highly sought out by collectors and…

2011 Texas State Road Race Championship
The Fort Hood Challenge
by Jack Mott

For the past few years the Texas State Championship has been held at Ford Hood, a military base that provides a course completely closed to traffic. Negotiating this race location is not always easy, as security measures are very strict, but the payoff is huge. A closed course means no center-line rule…

Oatmeal is good for you, especially on a cool fall bike ride
by Gil Jones        Musings of Captain Justice
Sometimes we just get lucky and have time for a cycling adventure on a crisp pre-fall morning.  60 degrees at the start and 77 degrees three hours later — it doesn’t get better!

There are so many good routes to take in Burnet and Llano counties that it is sometimes hard to decide. My…
