About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Clear blue skies and a temperature 20 to 25 degrees below… – October 2nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 2, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 2, 2011

Clear blue skies and a temperature 20 to 25 degrees below what I am used to greeted me for today’s ride. A cool front passed through yesterday and overnight it was 58 degrees. I was wondering what it would be by the time I was able to ride this morning. It was 75 degrees (34% humidity) when I started and 83 degrees (29% humidity) when I finished. It felt like there was a brisk northeast or north wind but the weather stations show that it is calm. This may account for my average speed of 15.6 mph on my Garmin Edge (SportTracks reduced this to 15.4 mph). My average cadence was a great 82.5 RPM, the highest it has been since August 27th when I rode the Hotter’n Hell Hundred. This weather is supposed to continue for several days so hopefully I can take advantage of it. This is the first ride for October so the monthly mileage is not adding up yet and the year to date miles are now 4266.57. Today’s ride was 25.23 miles. I did see a couple of other bikers out enjoying the weather but they were not close enough to recognize.

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2011

Judy Austin Memorial Jam Cycling Event
Lubbock, TX
This ride will specifically help fund the drugs Fenretinide and Safingol. The protocol involving the combination of these two drugs has shown great promise in attacking cancer cells without harm to normal cells. One hundred percent of the money donated is tax deductible and will go toward the cost of manufacturing these drugs. For more information regarding this research, how the monies are used, or to see your donation at work (tour of the lab), please contact CCF at 806-445-0555.

There will be a 10, 30, and 50 mile ride. For the little ones riding tricycles, training wheels, etc., there will be a block ride.

The Registration fee is a $50 tax deductible donation with a challenge to raise at least $50 more for a total minimum of $100 per participant.

Registration for a child participating in the block ride is a $10 donation and they must be accompanied by an adult who has either registered as a rider, a sponsor or a party animal.  Please be aware that we will not be able to provide childcare and the adult must take responsibility for the child.

The rides will begin at 8:00 a.m., and all festivities will conclude at approximately 2:00 p.m. Check -in will start at 7:00 a.m.

The ride will begin and conclude at the CCF offices. After the ride, there will be a celebratory luncheon/picnic. Wicked Beaver Brewery and Hop of Texas have graciously donated the liquid carbs for those over 21. For those under 21, there will be plenty of soft drinks, juice, and water. In addition, there will be live music and good food worthy of any cyclist.

The CCF staff and volunteers will staff all rest stops, take care of all logistics, provide food/drink, etc.

Routes are being designed and will be posted online soon.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for October 1st

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2011 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2011

No ride today because I spent most of the day at the University of Houston Natatorium for the Houston Area Special Olympics swim competition. My niece was in four events and came away with four gold medals. The number of competitors seemed huge and the concrete bleachers were not butt friendly so thank goodness for the hours I have spent on my bike saddle.

East Texans cycle in the 20th Annual Pineywoods Purgatory
By Alexis Spears        www.ktre.com
LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) –

Terri Cawley strapped on her helmet, gathered her family, and brought her bike to ride across East Texas in the 20th Annual Pineywoods Purgatory.

Cawley is a triathelete, but this is her first bike ride across the Pineywoods.

“I’m just excited, just you know, looking for a good time. For me, it’s about seeing how fast I can finish. For most people, it’s not, but it’s part of the training for…

City updates bicycle plan, focusing on roads
Next year, funds likely will be spent on infrastructure, engineering, studies.
By Vianna Davila        www.mysanantonio.com
City Council adopted an updated bicycle master plan Thursday, along with a complete streets policy that calls for considering the needs of all users — from pedestrians to motorists — in future road projects.

Council adopted the plans without discussion at its regular meeting, just two days before the city’s first ciclovía, or bikeway, event on Sunday. Called SíClovía, the event closes streets to vehicular traffic to foster alternative…

Riding along the escarpment will bring a little climbing and a little downhill and lots of views. The route will be around 60 miles with a bailout along the way giving 36 miles. We will gather at the Maypearl High School at the southern terminus of FM-157. Take FM-157 south, past Venus. The school is on your right, well before FM-157 “T”’s into FM-66.

Contextualizing Cycling Stats
By Carl Bialik            WSJ Blogs
My print column this week examines two recent studies of cycling’s dangers to pedestrians and cyclists themselves that received widespread press coverage. I write that both studies, when placed in proper context, are less worrisome than they first appear.

The more-recent study, of soot in cyclists’ lungs in London, was presented this week at the European Respiratory Society’s Annual Congress in Amsterdam. It compared the soot in certain lung cells of five male bicycle commuters in London with soot levels in the same cells in five…
