About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Thanks for speaking up to support federal bike funding

A few weeks ago, we asked you to contact your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators via email to ask for their continuing support of dedicated bike funding in the next federal transportation bill.

Your messages made a difference: Members of Congress and staffers talked about the strong response, and many said that it was a convincing statement of how much…

Lather on the sun screen and venture forth – August 2nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2011

With my new leisure status I can now ride when I choose so I think but with the record temperatures each day my best option is to ride in the early morning. Even then the temperature is starting to move up the gauge. Today when I started it was 84 and at 11:15 when I finished it was 93. There was some relief when I rode in the shade but I am learning the morning shade is on a different side of the road than the evening shade. The partly cloudy sky was visually attractive but it also did not offer much shade either. So lather on the sun screen and venture forth brave biker. The wind helped to add some cooling but it was only 7 mph. Humidity was high at 53% when I finished which probably accounts for the perspiration rolling off about every part of my body. It was 72% when I started.

After yesterday’s 41 mile ride I figured today should be shorter to allow for some recovery. I thought my route would be around 30 miles and it turned out to be 30.11 miles. Average speed was 15.0 mph and max speed was 21.4 mph. Average cadence was 79.0 RPM. August miles are now at 71.62 and the year to date miles are 3510.27.

Everyone Should Train like an Athlete
Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin
All exercisers should follow the principles of training used by competitive athletes. You will gain far more health benefits from intense exercise than from more casual exercise, and you will gain more strength and muscle growth. Athletes do not do the same workouts every day. If they did, they would not gain the increased strength, speed and endurance that are necessary for competition. They take an intense workout in which they feel a deep…

Today’s ride is the first one in retirement – August 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 1, 2011 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2011

Today’s ride is the first one in retirement. My wife gifted us a weekend in Galveston so I did not ride Saturday or Sunday. The plan as to leave around 9:00 AM this morning on a somewhat new route for a 40+ miles ride. Well I left at 9:08AM and the ride was 41.51.miles. Leaving early on a weekday was a rare event for me in the past since this would be either on a holiday or a vacation day. The temperature at the start 81 degrees and this felt comfortable with the light breeze that was around. By the end of the ride the temperature was 97 degrees at my home weather station. Riding in the shade made a big difference. Weekday traffic is different in the morning than in the evening when I normally ride. I think I prefer the morning variety with fewer people going my direction.

The new route portion was on a road I just discovered a couple of weeks ago called Tram Road which begins in Roman Forest and ends north of FM2090 east of Splendora. I believe this road was used by the tram’s from Houston to Cleveland back in the early 1900’s and was abandoned when the trams quit running. I had been on Tram from the FM2090 side but I did not know it went through to Roman Forest. The Kingwood Clippers use this route at times I am told.

Since this is the first day of August there is no month to date mileage to report but I am up to 3480.16 miles for the year. As I was riding I wondered if this could the first 200 mile week I have ever had. Time will tell.
