About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hot and Humid and No Dogs – July 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 23, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJuly 23, 2011

Today’s ride was the first one in a while without a dog sprint. I did not miss them either. One thing I did have was 91% humidity at the start. Thankfully this dropped to 51% by the time I finished. I have not weighted but I must have lost 4 to 5 pounds of water in sweat. At my first stop to refill my water bottle I was pouring perspiration like a fountain. The temperature went from 78 degrees to 94 degrees. My goal was to ride at least 55 miles and I made it to 56.1 miles. My average speed was 14.9 mph which was a little lower than I would have liked but there were some stretches where the wind was strong and slowed me down. I did managed a max speed of 21.9 mph though. Average cadence was 76.4 RPM. I saw one other biker at the 49 mile mark and I almost missed him when he rode past me from behind as I turned left onto another street.

July mileage update:

  • July miles 493.04
  • This week miles 130.12
  • YTD miles 3332.13

I had been hit with a wet blanket – July 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 22, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJuly 22, 2011

When I walked out of the house this evening to the garage to go on my ride it was like I had been hit with a wet blanket. After all of these months without rain the last two days we have had rain. Today was .41″ of rain so th humidity is moving back up to normal for here. The temperature was in the 90’s and the humidity was not too far below that. I normally do not ride on Friday’s but I didn’t ride yesterday because I wanted to watch stage 18 of the Tour de France with the HC mountains. this stag might decide who was going to win and the broadcast amount of time was long. So I decided to ride today. I was struggling some when I was going to the south and I was wondering how strong the wind was. When I got home I found out the wind was 17.3 mph from the southeast. This explains at least partially why my average speed was only 14.4 mph. I did manage a max speed of 21.5 mph during the 25.02 mile ride though. Average cadence was 77.9 RPM, somewhat low. July miles are up to 436.95 and year to date I have ridden 3276.03 miles. This week is at 74.02 miles.
