About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I made it back to riding after a two day absence – June 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 23, 2011 by Rick AnkrumJune 23, 2011

I made it back to riding after a two day absence. We did get a little rain yesterday but not enough to register on my rain gauge. Some parts around Houston got over 1″ and as much as 2″ of rain. This evening was the first ride on the new tires and they came through in flying colors (actually gray) with no flats and I rode over the McKay Causeway on FM1960 without any flats but the smell was another thing. I guess the accumulation of dead insects from the 147+ days without rain turned to a big smelly mess with the rain and the east bound shoulder had some big piles of fermented bugs. The west bound piles were much smaller and thus less smelly. Along with the rain the temperature was milder for the ride at 85 degrees and the humidity was up some to 58%. Wind was at 14 mph from the southeast with mostly cloudy skies. There were some threatening clouds to the west when I started riding but they disappeared by the ride finish. Several other bikers were out in various spots along the route.

This week’s mileage is going to be lower than usual due to the shortened ride on Monday and then the two days off. Today’s ride was 28.65 miles bringing the week total to 40.38, June miles to 492.05 and the year to date miles to 2669.76 miles. I was not expecting my average speed to be 15.2 mph because of the strong headwind for the first 13 miles of the ride. The return home average speed overcame the low speed. Average cadence was 80 rpm.

Cyclist taking on cross-country journey in velomobile
Ed Todd
Midland Reporter-Telegram
As captain of his own ship, David Eggleston happily casts his craft into the civilized wilds.

With it, he wishes health and vitality to all folks through cycling and good eats, energy for the engine.

“Look, Daddy, there’s a rocket ship,” a youngster exclaimed, as Eggleston recently was riding around Midland on a Saturday morning. He was cycling, comfortably and somewhat reclined, in his velomobile. …

Fat Tire Bike Tours guide sightseers boldly through Paris history, architecture
By Ellise Pierce    Special to the Star-Telegram
PARIS — First, a little background. I live in Paris. I have a bike. It is in the garage, covered in three years of dust. I rode my bike (then brand-new) exactly once, and was so terrified of getting smashed by one of Paris’ crazy, screaming, fist-waving drivers that I never rode it again. I prefer the city’s super-efficient-when-not-on-strike metro…

Block Periodization Training Update
by Ken        Texas Racing Life
For a 4 week training cycle, I decided to try block training, which I describe in an earlier post.  Here’s an update on how it’s going!

I have completed the first week of block training, so on to week 2!  Week 1 went pretty well, as I was focused on sprinting. To accomplish this, I was doing mainly 300 meter sprints, which is roughly between 20-30 seconds of effort.  Other days I would concentrate on 1 minute intervals, which is about the longest interval I can do where I feel my muscles are performing purely anaerobically.  Anything longer wouldn’t really be a sprint workout, but…
