About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I remember back when Cannondale bikes first started to be popular. There was a big to do about how large the tubes were. I have owned several over the years. The SpendMatters blog covers strategic sourcing, my profession.

Car Wars! Steel vs. Aluminum — Not as Cut and Dry as You Think
Jason Busch, Metal Miner
Years ago (I’m talking 1991/1992) when I was into Cat 2/3 competitive cycling, we used to make fun of all the nut jobs riding those fat, ugly aluminum bikes made by Cannondale (they used to be much fatter and uglier than today). However, the massively oversized tubes made up for aluminum’s rigidity loss, given the technology and alloys available at the time. And the ride and response was actually quite good, especially looking at value for the dollar (carbon and titanium frames were outrageous at the…

Bear Creek Criterium #1 P/1/2/3 2011
by Ken
Bear Creek Crits are during the month of May in Houston.  They start the real criterium racing season for the Texas Gulf Coast.  The course is really amazing (rivaling the Driveway) with smooth roads and an interesting 270 degree turn about 300 yards to the start/finish line.  The other turns in the course are very sweeping and easy.  The only thing that the driveway has that this doesn’t is more options for different courses. But, they had free…

I fixed the flat front tire last night – May 5th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 5, 2011 by Rick AnkrumMay 5, 2011

I fixed the flat front tire last night and it held up well during this evening’s ride. I did not find a specific object that might have caused the flat but there was piece of glass in the tire near the hole in the tube.

Chamber of Commerce weather was waiting when I got home from work. I was out of the house a few minutes late but there was enough time to ride 28.52 miles which was a little further than yesterday. Mid 70’s temperature with clear skies and a 16 mph wind made for a nice ride atmosphere. I did met two other riders on Old Atascocita Road. I averaged 15.4 mph with a maximum speed 22.8 mph. I have been able to average over 15 mph for the last several rides. This can be challenging with all of the back streets I take to get to the more open roads.

May miles are 101.61 and year to date miles are 1604.28. The next ride day will be Saturday, weather permitting.

Surprisingly, Texas Gets Bike Friendly
by Howard Draper alttransport.com

A decade ago, looking for signs of bike friendly improvements in Texas was like looking for life on Mars. Gas was cheap, sprawl was kicking into overdrive, and local and state governments committed funding towards every pie-in-the-sky, auto-centric transportation project. From 1990 to 2005, Texas population increased 35 percent, while driving increased 45 percent, according to this data. …
