About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup April 28th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on April 28, 2011 by Rick AnkrumApril 28, 2011

Dear Dr. Mirkin:  What should long distance runners and bicycle racers eat to help them recover faster?
During their recovery periods, they should eat huge amounts of foods loaded with protein and carbohydrates. Since the 1930s, athletes have known that they can recover faster from hard workouts by eating extra carbohydrates: fruits, vegetables, and whole grain bakery products and pastas. The carbohydrates refill their muscles with glycogen (stored sugar).  Sugar requires less oxygen to fuel muscles during…

All of us have seen the riders with the strange looking Mohawks on their helmets at bike rides. If you have wondered how they made them this next article from Make Magazine will show you how to dress up your helmet.

How-To: Helmet Mohawks
via Make: Online by Sean Michael Ragan

A commenter on yesterday’s CRAFT-y Bike Projects round-up alerted me to the DIY bike helmet mohawk phemonenon. Those pictured at left are from 2009 by Instructables user dan. The bright orange model is made from cable ties. To lower right is a helmet mohawk made with…

Urgent call to action on TX Complete Streets Bill from Bike Texas
We have just received an urgent alert from Bike Texas on the Complete Streets Bill making its way (hopefully) through the Texas Legislature.  This bill would help the Texas Department of Transportation and the Texas Transportation Commission transition to full consideration of all road users in all decision making and projects.  This would mean better sidewalks, better compliance with ADA requirements, more safe bike routes, and the proper consideration of all of these things throughout the design and implementation of projects. …

I increased my average speed – April 28th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 28, 2011 by Rick AnkrumApril 28, 2011

I was able to go a little farther on this evening’s ride than yesterday’s ride. Not by much but it was .7 of a mile for a total of 28.48. I increased my average speed from 15.2 to 15.4 mph. This was probably caused by the wind being much lighter than yesterday. The wind was 8 mph from the east and the skies were still clear. Temperature was not a factor other than it was about 73 degrees when I finished but it was a little cool in the shade when the sun was down below the tree top line. The humidity continues to be low: 25% when I started and 32% when I finished.

Unexpectedly I met 5 bikers that were coming back as I was going south on Fairlake Drive and Old Atascocita Road. On my evening rides I do not usually see other riders. My average cadence was up to 82.5 rpm from 80.4 rpm. Maximum speed was 22.2 mph a little lower than yesterday. The extra sunlight helps to get this longer ride in.

April mileage update:

  • April miles 612.90
  • YTD miles 1439.57
