About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Trail Under Central – Serious Progress
by dickdavid

Looks like the forms are up on the southern underpass (just south of Renner Road). It usually doesn’t take them long to pour the slab once it’s at this point. That doesn’t mean the trail will be open, yet. There is a bunch of finishing work that needs to be done before it will be open for riders. We’ll keep you posted.

Who are the Wheelbrothers?
It all started in the summer of 2004 when a soccer player with the name of Rainer, convinced several of his teammates, that the idea of riding in a 100 mile bicycle race, called ‘Hotter n Hell 100′ three weeks later, sounded like a great idea. Not knowing what they were in for, 3 of his friends signed up. The rest as they say, is history…

Moving bikes stay upright—but not for the reasons we thought
by jtimmer@arstechnica.com (John Timmer)
The phrase “just like riding a bike” is used to refer to something that, once learned, you never forget how to do. As it turns out, bikes make that easy on us. If a typical bicycle is moving forward fast enough, it tends to remain upright and steer in a straight line, even if the rider…

The wind shifted to the southeast – April 17th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 17, 2011 by Rick AnkrumApril 17, 2011

The blue skies and moderate temperature continued today. The wind shifted to the southeast and kicked up to 20 mph. It was 80 degrees when I finished my ride. These conditions should have helped the BP MS 150 riders as they finish the ride into Austin today. Again I had a nice tailwind as I rode north away from home but when I turned south at the 10 mil mark the headwind slowed me to a crawl at times when I was in the open areas. Even the trees did not offer much protection. I still managed to average 14.7 mph overall. One 5 mile section I averaged 16.7 mph but this was with the tailwind.

This was a good mileage week with 145.92 miles riding 5 days out of seven. My conditioning is improving from the winter level as I can ride into the wind and not totally come to a stop. Around this area wind is the challenge since there are no hills except for overpasses. The upcoming week will have good riding conditions as the dry weather is expected to continue.

No riders out today along my route; they must all be somewhere between La Grange and Austin.

April mileage update:

  • April miles 371.59
  • YTD miles 1198.26
