About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup March 4th – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on March 4, 2011 by Rick AnkrumMarch 4, 2011

Today I learned about two bicyclist terms I had not heard before: gutter bunny and bikelash. Checking google.com I found several sources for a definition. These may be new terms to you as well.

According to the Urban Dictionary the gutter bunny is the cyclist you see cranking along the snowbanks every morning in January, huffing home sweating bullets in August, and pedaling off to work, come rain, shine and everything in between. … refer to themselves as. May have originally started as a disparaging remark mountain bikers used to refer to commuters as but it has now been accepted.

Wordspy.com defines bikelash: n. A strong, negative reaction towards cyclists, particularly by police officers or drivers. Also: bike-lash. Call it a bikelash! The NYPD has been ordered to begin a borough-wide crack-down that will hit renegade riders for often-overlooked “vehicular offenses” like failing to obey traffic signals and signs, breaking the speed limit, tailgating, and even failure to signal before turning.

Economic instability and ever-increasing climate change are just two of the many reasons riding a bike is an excellent alternative to driving.
In honor of May’s Bike to Work Week, we’re continuing our look at smart ways to start saddling up and using bicycles for real transportation.

We’ve always taken the greenness of bike transport as a given. But if you’re just getting started — or perhaps trying to convince an employer that bicycle commuting is…

For the first time this year I was over dressed… – March 3rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 3, 2011 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2011

For the first time this year I was over dressed for a ride. I was expecting the 70 degrees at the start of the ride to drop down to 60 by the time I got back but it only went to 68. The fleece jersey, full finger gloves, windbreaker jacket and leg warmers were more than enough. March weather is still acting like a lamb although Saturday’s weather could rough things up a little. I want to do the Baytown Gator Ride but not in the rain. As of now this is what the forecast looks like:

Saturday
tstorms Mostly cloudy. A slight chance of showers early in the morning…then showers and thunderstorms likely in the morning. A chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the upper 60s. North winds 5 to 10 mph in the morning increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Chance of rain 60 percent in the morning decreasing to 50 percent in the afternoon.

Tonight the weather was mostly cloudy skies with a SE 12 mph breeze. The ride was uneventful but challenging at times when I was going into the wind. The Motobecane 700HT gearing is pretty low so I can hit over 100 RPM but not have much speed.

Mileage report:

  • March miles 28.91
  • YTD miles 554.09
