About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Transportation Commission approves plan
by Lufkin Daily News
By MELISSA CRAGER/The Lufkin Daily News The Texas Transportation Commission met in Austin last week to adopt the much-discussed 2035 Statewide Long-Range Plan.

Two public open-house style meetings were held at TxDOT’s Lufkin District office about the plan, which covers the next 24 years and includes “systems and facilities for highways and turnpikes, aviation, public transportation, railroads and high-speed railroads, waterways, pedestrian walkways and bicycle transportation…

2010 Tour Das Hugel Report
from Mike’s Bike Blog
For those of you that don’t know the Tour Das Hugel is 110 mile ride of Austin’s Hills. In the 110 miles it accounts for roughly 10,000 feet of climbing. Most hills are only 1/2 mile in length but average 10-14% grade with 20 to 24% thrown in for good measure. The Hugel is not a race, it’s not sanctioned, it’s a pirate race of sorts. In the years past a t-shirt is available for purchase for those that complete the entire 110 mile route. There generally…

The Sound of Knobby – November 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 22, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 22, 2010

When you ride in the evening in the dark the noises seem to be less which means I could hear the sound of the knobby tires on the Motobecane 700HT MTB as I was out this evening. I am used to riding on semi-slick tires on my Raleigh M800 and they did not make much noise. Also the knobby tires have some squish when you make a turn as the tire twists. I have to adjust my steering technique a little to compensate. I also learned that the rear disc brake stops in a hurry when you grab the brake lever. This happened when I was coming off of the West Lake Houston Parkway bridge sidewalk and there were two lady joggers coming towards me. I thought they saw me but I still slowed down and then one of the ladies turned her head away and started to move into my pathway. That is when I grabbed the brake lever and the rear tire stopped with a chirp. I avoided the joggers and I don’t think they realized what happened.

The weather was nice and warm at 76 degrees when I left on the ride. The skies were cloudy and the wind was 13 mph from the south. I can expect similar weather at least through Wednesday and maybe Thursday, but no riding on Thanksgiving Day. A strong cold front is expected on Friday.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 242.49
  • YTD miles 4845.46

11-22-2010 Ride Information

Additional charts, weather and map.

Annual bicycle rally draws more than 1,000 cyclists
By Rachel Mehlhaff / Staff Writer
from www.dallasnews.com
It took about six minutes — the length of two Taylor Swift songs interrupted by the occasional “gobble, gobble, gobble” — for more than 1,000 cyclists to roll out of the starting point for the Turkey Roll Bicycle Rally on Saturday morning.
Turkey Roll
The 28th annual rally, hosted by the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis Club, kicked off with music blaring in the parking lot of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Riders could choose…

What this is about.
from Texas MTB Guy
So I recently picked up my first “real” mountain bike, and I freaking love it. I want to really get deeper into the sport and find out what it’s all about, so I figured I’d start this blog and keep track of all my experiences.

But first, background.

My name is Tim, I’m an 18 year old college student in North Texas. My bike is a 2009 Specialized Rockhopper. I like to think that I have above average bike skills, but I don’t know how I really compare. Physically I’m in no shape, I originally bought the bike to get some quality exercise. (I hate the gym, too boring.) I figured…

Fighting the Wind Back – November 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 21, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 21, 2010

What a difference the riding direction made today. Heading north during the first half of the ride was an easy 19.4 mph but when I turned to head back home I was fighting the wind. I could tell the wind was strong but I did not how strong it was. When I checked the weather I saw the wind was 16 mph with 22 mph gusts from the south. The good part was the temperature this wind brought with it, 79 degrees. Scattered clouds were appreciated. After yesterday’s ride this was going to be the recovery ride but with this brutal wind I was battling the bonk. The warm weather is supposed to be with us until Wednesday. According to the SciGuy blog there has not been a recorded temperature at Houston of 90 degrees or above in November.

I only saw one other rider and that was near the end when a rider in a University of Michigan (I think) caught up with me.

The Garmin 305 was working today. No battery issues but when I tried to upload the ride into my Windows 7×64 bit computer I got three BSD’s before I managed to get the data. I have tried another fix by deleting the grmnusb.sys driver file and installing one from the Windows Update instead of the Garmin supplied file. I will see if this fixes the problem.

Tomorrow evening’s ride will be warm and the second one on my new Motobecane 700HT MT. I will test my latest adjustments.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 225.37
  • Miles this week 104.94
  • YTD miles 4828.34

11-21-2010 Ride Information

Additional charts, weather and map.
