About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

November 18th Bike Ride – It Didn’t Matter…

Texbiker.net Posted on November 18, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 18, 2010

It didn’t matter that the temperature was 57 degrees (3 degrees below my normal cutoff to ride) when I left for my evening bike ride. I got the new Motobecane 700HT mountain bike yesterday and I wanted to take a test ride to see what I needed to adjust. the first thing I noticed was the position of the Garmin 305 Edge. The angle of the stem made the Garmin almost vertical which meant I could not see the information even when I stopped and looked closely. I should have thought of this when I put the bracket on last night. But I was moving along putting everything together. The seat position needs to be fine tuned but surprisingly the stock seat that came with the bike is rather comfortable. It is a WTB model. The knobby tires were quieter than I thought they would be so I will keep them for now. Disk brakes are new to me so some of the differences are being discovered. One is the disk rubs the caliper slightly when I turn a corner. I think this is from the rim and hub movement caused by the flexing. Standing still and spinning the rims the disks do not touch nor make a noise. The brakes are Avid ones.

So Saturday will be adjustment day for a few items. The weather Saturday though points to road bike riding, not MTB riding except maybe a test run to verify my changes.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 148.31
  • YTD miles 4751.28 (getting closer to my 5,000 goal, 249 to go)

11-18-2010 Ride information and map

Additional charts, weather and map.

Texas Bicycling in the News Today – November 17th

Texbiker.net Posted on November 17, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 17, 2010

No ride this evening. I received my new Motobecane 700HT mountain bike and I spent the evening assembling and moving my stuff from the Raleigh M800 to the Motobecane 700HT. Tomorrow I could be sad about not riding this evening because the weather is supposed to turn cooler by the time I get home from work.

We went for a 44 mile cycling tour out in the hilly part of Texas and came perilously near to extending that ride to 50 miles. We were saved only by the excruciating pain inflicted by a snazzy new “anatomically correct bike seat” on the …

How to tour and experience the Big Bend of Texas
By Jerry Witherspoon
Ft Davis was fun; now what?: Decisions, Decisions
From the Ft Davis hub one can leave to the southeast toward Alpine, the largest town in the ‘Bend, still on highway 118. Or perhaps point south-southeast on hwy 17 toward Marfa. The ride on 118 to Alpine is definitely the prettier of the two, but either way, the rider will want to get to both towns for a look and a discovery session. Neither town is more than a very easy day’s ride, thus the temptation is to again simply pass thru, grabbing a quick exposure. Bad idea, for both these are full of surprises. This article isn’t intended as a travelogue, but to lead the prospect toward…

Big Bend Ranch State Park trail designated an “Epic” mountain bike ride
PRESIDIO – The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) has designated the Fresno–Sauceda Loop Trail at Big Bend Ranch State Park an “Epic” ride.
