About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fighting the Wind Back – November 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 21, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 21, 2010

What a difference the riding direction made today. Heading north during the first half of the ride was an easy 19.4 mph but when I turned to head back home I was fighting the wind. I could tell the wind was strong but I did not how strong it was. When I checked the weather I saw the wind was 16 mph with 22 mph gusts from the south. The good part was the temperature this wind brought with it, 79 degrees. Scattered clouds were appreciated. After yesterday’s ride this was going to be the recovery ride but with this brutal wind I was battling the bonk. The warm weather is supposed to be with us until Wednesday. According to the SciGuy blog there has not been a recorded temperature at Houston of 90 degrees or above in November.

I only saw one other rider and that was near the end when a rider in a University of Michigan (I think) caught up with me.

The Garmin 305 was working today. No battery issues but when I tried to upload the ride into my Windows 7×64 bit computer I got three BSD’s before I managed to get the data. I have tried another fix by deleting the grmnusb.sys driver file and installing one from the Windows Update instead of the Garmin supplied file. I will see if this fixes the problem.

Tomorrow evening’s ride will be warm and the second one on my new Motobecane 700HT MT. I will test my latest adjustments.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 225.37
  • Miles this week 104.94
  • YTD miles 4828.34

11-21-2010 Ride Information

Additional charts, weather and map.

You Pedal: Soccer and a bike ride
by Jami

Love to Pedal
Last weekend I rode over to the neighborhood park to get in a 3 mile run.  Running is not my favorite, but when I only have 30 minutes, it’s a great calorie burn.  Riding my bike over to the park is more fun than driving, and it bookends the jogging with what I’d rather be doing.  Last weekend  I was not motivated to run.  In fact I was forcing myself…

As we approach the winter days the rides are winding down and the news and blogs seem to slowing as well. Not much to report on today.

Oops I missed this one!

Cycling – 18 miler with Gil Jones and David Nantz – Video of 41.1 mph descent
by donbynum|
Friday afternoon Gil Jones, David Nantz and I headed out southeast from the city of Burnet on CR330 and eventually worked our way around to CR334.  The weather was about perfect.  We had fairly light winds, a great blue sky and a starting temperature around 75 degrees.   Gil and David rode their two-wheeled upright prostate…

Mystery Battery Discharge – November 20th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 20, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 20, 2010

I was heading to the door to leave on the ride this morning when I tried to turn on my Garmin 305 Edge GPS. The screen would not come up so I started to wonder what was wrong. I plugged in the USB cable and the charging mode started up. The battery was almost down to no charge. I thought I had finished the charge cycle after my Thursday evening ride, in fact I am certain. But I had some issues downloading that ride from the 305 and my computer crashed twice. I ended up removing the Garmin USB drivers from the computer and then the download worked. There might have been something that set the 305 in the active mode again and drained the battery. Anyway today’s ride is based on a previous ride on a similar route.

This was going to be a different ride because a friend, David Mowry, was driving up from Kema to ride with me. He is into triathlons and needs to get more riding experience. So I met him and we took off. Along the ride on FM2090 west of Splendora a group of riders were coming towards us. There were probably 8 or so. They were moving pretty fast. I am guessing they were from The Woodlands Cycling Club. It was good to have a fellow rider to comment about what and how the ride was going.

Today’s weather was cool at the start of the ride (55 degrees when I left home) but when I finished at 1:23 PM it was 76 degrees. I dressed warm for the ride and left my windbreaker at David’s van. The clear skies soon became mostly cloudy as the southeast wind blew the clouds in at 9 mph. It was a fast paced ride with David pushing some big gears when we had the wind behind us. I needed to pick up the pace when David lead out on FM2090. This is good because when I ride alone there is no one to push the pace.

Not much data for today’s ride:

  • November miles 200.31
  • YTD miles 4803.28

The only thing I have is the weather status when I finished.

11-20-2010 Weather at the end of the ride.

by admin
Anyone who knows Iowa Lakes Head Soccer Coach Kevin Farley and has asked him where he is from also knows that is the answer you will hear in response. Lewisville is his hometown and the “Fighting Farmers” are his alma mater’s mascot.
Now it’s a quote that will be heard quite often over the next six months. Lewisville, Texas, is the next destination for the 2nd annual charity…
