About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

How to tour and experience the Big Bend of Texas
By Jerry Witherspoon
Ft Davis was fun; now what?: Decisions, Decisions
From the Ft Davis hub one can leave to the southeast toward Alpine, the largest town in the ‘Bend, still on highway 118. Or perhaps point south-southeast on hwy 17 toward Marfa. The ride on 118 to Alpine is definitely the prettier of the two, but either way, the rider will want to get to both towns for a look and a discovery session. Neither town is more than a very easy day’s ride, thus the temptation is to again simply pass thru, grabbing a quick exposure. Bad idea, for both these are full of surprises. This article isn’t intended as a travelogue, but to lead the prospect toward…

I Did Not Even Check… – November 16th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 16, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 16, 2010

I did not even check the temperature before I left for the evening bike ride. I was afraid the temperature would be below my 60 degree threshold. When I got back I saw the temperature on my weather station was 56 degrees and 51 degrees at Intercontinental Airport. Thankfully the wind was calm or the wind chill would have probably moved it into the 40’s. I dressed like it was cool with two long sleeve jerseys, wind jacket, full-finger gloves, and leg warmers. Even with this I was chilly until the 2.5 mile point. Then the body heat kicked in and I was comfortable until the end of the ride. Darkness seems to accentuate the chill. The Raleigh M800 is well suited for these rides with the light system of two flashing taillights and headlight.Today was the first one that the sky was clear. Tomorrow is supposed to be a repeat.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 134.30
  • YTD miles 4737.27

If you are not a Google Maps fan then Mapquest could be an alternate.

New API of the Week: MapQuest Bike Route API
from ReadWriteWeb by Klint Finley
MapQuest, owned by AOL, has taken backseat to newer mapping services like Google Maps and Bing Maps of late. But the venerable driving directions site added some exciting new data to its open API: bike routing information. Users and developers will now be able to access routes optimized for biking through MapQuest’s Open Directions Service. …

No more news for today. The weather is due to clear up in southeast Texas so I may get to ride tomorrow evening.
