November 12th Bike Ride – Beat the Chill and Maybe Rain

When I got home from work this evening the warm temperature and overcast sky beckoned to ride. With tomorrow’s weather not looking too good I needed to get at least a few miles in this week or my legs would forget how to turn the pedals. Earlier in the week I pumped up the Hutchinson Basic Acrobat tires on my Raleigh M800 mountain bike to about 60 psi. The last ride I noticed they were not quite as firm as I like them to be. Since my route is almost 100% concrete and asphalt the Hutchinson tires without any knobs in the center are what I consider the best tire for this type of pavement short of a slick tire. The tire noise is almost nothing but this does expose me to an easier flat threat. Generally though flats have been few and far between. Since I don’t put that many miles on the Raleigh M800 the tires last 2 to 3 years.

The skies were overcast but the temperature was 72 degrees. A southeast 9 mph breeze was what caused me to wear a long sleeve jersey though, but only one jersey. Tomorrow this outfit will not be enough.

Daily News Roundup November 11th – Texas Bicycling

Rain continued today so my planned ride did not make it. The next day to ride will be Saturday. The weather is not real promising for Saturday but I expect this during November. That is why my monthly average for November is 200 to 300 miles, mostly from weekend rides. At least I am not facing the weather up north. Checking the weekend weather in my hometown my weather in southeast Texas is not that different: 68 for the high and 44 for the low. I need to remain optimistic! To backup this:

The plan was to ride my Raleigh M800 when I got home from work this evening. Plans are made to be changed. With a change in the wind to the southeast plenty of moisture came in from the Gulf of Mexico and light rain was falling as I drove home. So no ride tonight. “Saddle up” with us on March 26, 2011 (9:00 a.m.) for the 4th Annual LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour. Beginning/ending on the air strip of the historic LBJ Ranch at Stonewall TX, the tour traverses hilly, scenic, traffic-free roads adjacent to the Ranch. Routes of 10, 30, 44, and 65 miles (100K) provide the venue for the beginning of spring cycling in the gorgeous Texas Hill Country. As an added feature at 1:00 p.m., Luci Baines Johnson leads a narrated tour (included with registration fee) of each of the landmarks on the LBJ Ranch – the Texas White House, show barn, old school, old homestead, LBJ grave site. This will truly be a “Ride to Preserve History”. Tour cost is $35.00 until March 5 ($40.00 thereafter) for supported ride, post-ride hot meal (vegetarians accommodated), maps, SAG support, rest stops, commemorative bandanna, and t-shirt (to pre-registered riders).
