About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fish To Fry – October 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 30, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 30, 2010

The last two days the weather has cooled down significantly from earlier in the week. That delayed my ride today until after we got back from the adult Sunday School fish fry. By the time the temperature got into the 50’s there was not enough time to ride 50+ miles before we would leave for the fish fry. The skies continue to be clear blue and the humidity has dropped below 20% making the riding condition ideal once the temperature rose to the 70’s. It was a little cool when I was riding in the shadows after I made the turn back home at the 29 mile mark. I was riding on the south side of FM1314 and the trees were casting shadows onto the road. Every so often a break in the shade would come up and I could feel the temperature difference. Several counties have flash fire alerts because of the dryness (no rain this month so far) and the very low humidity. I read in the paper this morning that have been many grass fires. So far none of have been serious or out of control. We do not need to experience what California does.

I received my Shimano Ultegra 6700 clipless pedals and installed them before the ride today. One problem I had with the cleats on my Diadora shoes was the screws included with the cleats were not long enough to reach the threaded inserts in the shoe soles. I had to use the screws from the Look cleats I was replacing. This work fine. The cleats are much firmer in the pedals than the Look Keo pedal/cleat combination I have been using. When I twist the cleat to exit the pedal the movement is quite different. Another thing I noticed is the cleat entry is better than the Keo in that I did not miss the engagement like I have done with the Keo’s.

Also I added the Lezyne frame pump in place of the old one from my Mericer bike. The Lezyne is a tiny little frame pump that according to the packaging can reach up to 160 PSI. I will have to try this out because the aluminum body is very light. The interesting feature about this pump is the rubber hose to attach to the tire valve fits inside the pump while mounted and waiting to use. Depending on which type of valve you use determines which end of the hose is screwed into the body. This rounds out the addition or upgrades I have planned so far.

Toady’s ride information:

  • October miles  575.19
  • This week’s miles 100.60
  • YTD miles 4576.79

Gran Fondo:Texas TMCO – Hockley, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on October 30, 2010 by Rick AnkrumMarch 26, 2011

Gran Fondo:Texas TMCO
Start: Sunday, April 03, 2011 @ 7:45 AM
Houston Oaks Country Club & Family Sports Retreat
22602 Hegar Road   Hockley, TX
The Texas Medical Center Orchestra will sponsor a bicycle ride on April 3, 2011, for the benefit of the orchestra and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society:  Lone Star.  The ride will be a “gran fondo” type of ride which in Italian means “big ride”.  “This type of ride has become immensely popular in Europe” said Phil Pauzé, Event General Director and organizer.  “These rides are for all riders regardless of expertise and skill and include skilled cyclists Categories 1 through 5 as well as amateur cyclists in the recreational category.
Registration will open in January 3, 2011.  Registrations will be limited to 3000 riders.

Some of the best road surfaces in the greater Houston area are found in Waller County along the northwest corridor of Highway 290 West. The Gran Fondo: Texas TMCO has maximized these roads to create routes that are unique, safe and challenging. Scheduled just 2 weeks prior to the BP MS150 and 2 weeks following the last Texas Cup race, the timed component of the two longer routes (100K and 100 mile) will allow riders of every skill and competitive level to compare themselves to their fellow riders. From the flat and rolling roads at the start at Houston Oaks Country Club & Family Sports Resort to the 6-7% grades of the hills around White Hall, expect the perfect final test for those riding the BP MS150, an ideal benchmark ride for those triathletes participating in the Memorial Hermann Ironman or a ‘no excuse/ no regret’ incentive to “Cat up” as the ride will meet USAC Gran Fondo requirements.

October 24: Bike In Single File
from TylerPaper.com
RANT: I wholeheartedly agree with a previous writer regarding bicyclists on Loop 49 between Texas Highway 155 and U.S. Highway 69. However, I would like to add one more bit of advice to these bicyclists: Bike in single file, not double file. When you are…

Ben Bostrom isn’t the only motorcycle racer making news with pedal power. A day after Bostrom won the Singlespeed World Championship in Rotorua, New Zealand, Kevin Schwantz, the 1993 500cc World Champion, was part of the four-rider Team Cycle Progression/Brand 34 squad that won both their class and the overall victory in the 24 Hours of Rocky Hill, at Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville, Texas.

Intervals to Improve Both Endurance and Speed

Dr. Gabe Mirkin’s Fitness and Health E-Zine
October 31, 2010

In last week’s eZine I explained why intense exercise is necessary for both *maximum health benefits of exercise and *maximum speed and endurance in athletic competition. This week’s issue describes how to use interval training for these benefits.

Cyclists, runners, and almost all other athletes have to move very fast in training to be at their best in competition.  owever, you can’t move very fast over long distances, so athletes…
