About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lightning to the North and Racing the Rain – November 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 1, 2010 by Rick AnkrumNovember 1, 2010

November is getting off to a different start from October. We could not have had a much drier October than we did. When I left on my ride this evening I noticed a band of orange and red to the far northwest of the radar sweep. The daylight was still fading when I left so the lightning was not visible if it was happening. Once the sun went down and the darkness set in the lightning danced across the north and east skies. That was when I decided I would shorten tonight’s ride by about a mile and turned back to race the rain, if it was as near as the lightning would lead me to believe. As it turned out I made it home without a drop of rain but the weatherman says after midnight the rain probability will increase. There is a severe thunderstorm watch for Harris County until 3:00 AM Tuesday.

Even with the rain threat there were many joggers, walkers and riders out in the dark without any lights. I met a group of three that I saw last week at the same spot and we commented about meeting. Last time they said they were going to get lights but it hasn’t happened yet. They promised they would before we meet again.

80 degrees, 76 % humidity and a south 8 mph breeze made for a damp ride from perspiration. Cool fronts are expected later this week. Riding could be challenging.

Today’s ride information:

  • November miles 16.33
  • YTD miles 4619.30

11-1-2010 Ride Information

Additional charts, weather and map.
