About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Coach’s creed guides attorney Berg’s life
by Brenham Banner Press
…But Eric Berg’s “road to Brenham” wasn’t closely connected to either of these cycling adventures (though he has enjoyed participating in the MS-150 charity event from Houston to Austin several times) — but rather his interest in returning to “the prosecution side” following the previous five years as a private practice defense attorney there in Conroe, and happily this situation…

This is why I like riding in the Texas heat. I did not know this.

Heat acclimation benefits athletic performance in hot and cool conditions

by Media Newswire (press release)

Participants underwent physiological and performance tests under both hot and cool conditions. A separate control group of eight highly trained cyclists underwent testing and followed the same exercise regime in a cool environment.

The data concluded that heat acclimation exposure provided…

Cycling – Tour de Longneques – October Edition
by donbynum| 12 Comments
October 23rd dawned with heavy thunderstorms over Burnet County, to the east and south of the Tour de Longneques’ storied route, and more were about 75 miles west of Llano County, but heading northeast.  Since a good percentage of the likely riders come from Marble Falls in southern Burnet County, attendance was less than hoped for, as quite a few riders could not believe that the route of the Tour was…

A Night Time Wind – October 25th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 25, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 25, 2010

I am not sure what is causing the wind to pick up today but it is blowing quite a lot. When I left on my evening ride the wind was 17 mph from the south with gusts to 25 mph. When I got back it is was still 15 mph from the south with 22 mph gusts. Usually when I ride my Raleigh M800 I use the 6th gear on the cassette with the middle ring on the crankset. Tonight there were times when I was heading south that I had to go to the 5th gear on the cassette. Some of this is the weight of the M800 over my road bike, Motobecane Le Champion. The temperature was warm with the weatherman saying the record high for this date could be reached. I don’t think that happened though. With the wind the clouds were thicker than usual. This is in contrast to the lower temperatures predicted for later in the week. Lots of dust and leaves blowing around. These are tough to see in the dark.

There was a bumper crop of unlit joggers and walkers out during the ride. So far I have been able to spot them in time. Today’s ride information:

  • October miles 492.46
  • YTD miles 4494.06

Make a Rear Mud Guard for Your Bicycle Out of an Old Wheel [DIY]

Check out the latest work by Make: Online fixture Peter Wagner, who built this excellent frankenstein bike that sports a pretty radical suspension.

Indian Summer Day – October 24th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2010

We are into day 24 of no significant rain. It did rain at my house late last night but it barely gt the grass damp. So that probably does not count. During the today the temperature is the low 90’s around the area and the scattered clouds do nothing to lower the heat. The wind has moderated some today from yesterday being 9 mph from the SSW. The weather report does not indicate any wind gusts but it sure felt like some when I was heading west on the McKay Causeway over Lake Houston.

No other riders were spotted on my route. This is the fourth ride on the Motobecane bike and the second on the Koobi PRS Century saddle. Both performed as expected.

Today’s ride information:

  • October miles 474.59
  • Miles this week 132.96
  • YTD miles 4476.18

10-24-2010 Ride Information and Map

I am back to using the Garmin Connect data view. The SportTracks was just as good but the image had to be smaller and seemed to not be as readable.
