About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

What A Head Wind – October 23rd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2010

I was riding along at a good clip until I made the turn to the southeast at Grangerland. At first I thought I was just tired from the nice speed I had maintained to that point. But then I noticed how the tree limbs were blowing in the wind. For several weeks the light breeze had not been anywhere near a problem but today the 16 mph SSE wind was really slowing me down. The 24 mph gusts just added to the problem. I went down one gear to see if that would help. Not really. So I slogged it out until I got home. When I stopped at the Valero station on FM1314 for a rest it really was a rest.

Not too long after I turned onto FM3083 I met a group of four bikers headed the opposite direction. They were not in a big hurry and with the wind at their back they were not using a lot of effort. I noticed one biker had on a LiveStrong jersey. Those were the only bikers today.

My new Motobecane continues to ride great. I have to think some of this is from the adrenaline from a new bike. Also I rode on the new Koobi PRS Century saddle for the first time. I will have a report on that in a separate post. I am still waiting on my order from Amazon.com with new Ultegra pedals and Lezyne frame pump. It is several days past due from the expected delivery date.

There was a 20% chance of rain today but nothing came of it. It did get cloudy at times and there were a few dark ones in the distance.

I am changing the below data picture from the Garmin Connect to SportTracks 3.0. Uploading to the Garmin website is a problem sometimes. I will still include that picture in the gallery below the big picture.

Mileage update:

  • October miles 447.93
  • This week’s miles 106.30
  • YTD miles 4449.53

Xtracycle: one year review
from Bike Denton by bikedenton
Xtracycle
3 words: Desert, Island, Bike.
…When I sold my car three years ago, I could carry about two bags of groceries home on my road bike in panniers.  With that much weight over just the rear, steering got wobbly and scary, and I couldn’t carry as much as I wanted to.  So I bought a used Burley D’lite trailer off Craigslist for $100.  Now I could haul 100 lb loads, but…

This was yet another great group ride hosted by Bike Friendly Oak Cliff.   The weather was perfect and I was impressed by the great selection of bicycles.  I’m a sucker for racks and baskets and there were great examples to admire.  Also, when we were relaxing in the Bishop Arts District I kept noticing these gorgeous urban bikes parked…

Daily News Roundup October 21st – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on October 21, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 21, 2010

One dead, one injured during McAllen hit-and-run wreck
from www.themonitor.com
An unidentified motorist plowed into a pair of cyclists and fled before dawn Thursday, fleeing the accident scene before one victim died at the hospital.

McAllen police responded to the wreck at North Main Street and Trenton Road about 5:55 a.m. Thursday. …

It is a sad day when anyone is killed in a hit and run especially a cyclist. Hopefully the police are able to identify the person responsible.

Another light news day for Texas bicycling.

Warm and Humid – October 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 21, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 21, 2010

The warm and humid weather is continuing in southeast Texas. It has now been at least 21 days without any rain at the official stations. I don’t know how many days we have to go to set the record but we are definitely heading that direction. This makes for good riding weather but when I am out in the country I see many brown trees and grass. This evening’s ride went past some front yards that are brown as well. I had my sprinkler system fixed and modified this week so many my yard will endure until the rain comes.

I actually saw two other riders tonight but they did not have lights on and it was dark. Not many joggers crossed my path though. It was 79 degrees when I finished and the humidity was 60 %. Partly cloudy skies and a south 8 mph breeze help to lessen the humidity feeling.

I am looking forward to the long road rides this weekend on the new Motobecane Le Champion. Today’s ride data:

  • October miles 393.76
  • YTD miles 4395.36

10-21-2010 Ride Data
