About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Daily News Roundup October 1st – Texas Bicycling

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2010 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2010

These designs look very strange against the bicycles we have today. I am not sure why there is a need to radically change what we have now but the search for a “better” bicycle is interesting. Bicycles make good design assignments for design schools since they are not so complex and everyone can identify with them. I do not expect to see these on Texas bike rides anytime soon though, if ever.

Yesterday I had a surprising tweet come through from @RoadMag:
“@RoadMag: Mike Wiland and Bruce A MacDonald you’ve won the Levi’s Grand Fondo tickets!! Please contact us today”

My first though was “is that me?” So I emailed the contact person back to see as I do recall doing something for a contest or two recently. I went to the Road Magazine Facebook page and read the contest was for uploading a photo for a chance to win a free entry to the sold out Levi’s Grand Fondo. This seemed like a contest I might…

With this gorgeous weather, it seems prudent to provide another update on the progress of the local bike trail system. There’s good news on most fronts, with two significant links almost completed and two more under way.

Both the Heritage East trail from San Jacinto to McKee north of downtown and the new bayou crossing into Herman Brown Park north of I-10 and east of the East Loop will be open by the end of the year, says Dan Raine, the city’s bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. …

UC Jacket & Jersey – September 30th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 30, 2010 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 30, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/51191350 465 548]

Today I received my new Adidas University of Cincinnati black logo jacket today. This goes with my UC jersey I have had for a couple of years and baseball hat. Now that I have these three the UC football team has not had a good start this year but I am not giving up on them.

Now these things do not have a direct connection to today’s ride but I wanted to show my Alma Mater loyalty for UC. A couple of years ago I was surprised to spot the UC jersey at Voler.com and my wife insisted that I get one even though I was reluctant due to the cost. I am glad I it got though.

Today’s ride on the Raleigh M800 mountain bike was good. The temperature was slightly warmer than yesterday at 83 degrees when I started to ride. Skies continue the clear blue streak and wind is non-existent which causes ozone alerts for the area. Riding after sunset puts a different look on the streets and trails I ride on. I still come up on people after dark without some kind of a light. So far no collisions.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 18.04
  • riding time 1:24:43
  • average pace 4:42 min/mile
  • average speed 12.8 mph
  • max speed 18.1 mph
  • no cadence sensor on the M800
  • climb 60 ft., descend 63 ft., max elevation 82 ft.
  • September miles 301.64 (I made it!)
  • YTD miles 4001.59 (I made this goal as well!!)
