About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

First Fall Evening Ride – September 27th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2010 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2010

The Raleigh M800 mountain bike was called into duty for this evening’s ride. Fall is in the air. Thanks to slow traffic on the drive home I got a later start than usual which combined with the 7:11 PM sunset made for the first ride in the dark since early spring. The temperature was 72 degrees but it felt like it was in the 60’s. I wore a short sleeve jersey but should have worn a long sleeve one. Wind was not more than 7 mph but adding in the riding speed the wind chill was close to my wimpy limit. Clear skies are the forecast for the next several days so the temperature will be chilly so I will need to dress better. With the sunset getting closer to the time I get home from work the Raleigh M800 will be the bike for the evening rides for the rest of the year. The headlight and taillights were necessary for the ride back home. I made it about half way before I had to turn them on.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 15.81
  • riding time 1:14;41
  • average pace 4;43 min/mile (the gearing on the MTB is much lower)
  • average speed 12.7 mph
  • max speed 18.5 mph
  • no cadence sensor on the Raleigh M800
  • climb 56 ft., descend 60 ft., max elevation 80 ft.
  • September miles 266.06
  • YTD miles 3966.02

Back Home from The Vacation – September 26th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 26, 2010 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 26, 2010

[iframe http://connect.garmin.com:80/activity/embed/50678578 465 548]

Today’s ride was the first since we returned from our three week vacation. The flat land here is quite different from the hills to mountains I encountered while I was on vacation. The weather here has a definite Fall feel to it. The temperature was 83 degrees with scattered clouds and a 11 to 12 mph NNW wind. According to the weather people this will be the first Fall “cool front” for our area. As a celebration I put the bikini top on my Jeep Wrangler. The weather is supposed to be clear and crisp in the mornings for the drive to work at least through Thursday. I’ll see if I can make it to then without getting caught in the rain.

It looks like I will not reach my goal of 400 miles for the month but I will be close to 300. I still plan on making it to 5,000 for the year but I will probably have to endure some cold day rides to make it happen.

During my absence not much has changed on my route that I rode. The roads are much smoother than some I rode in Zanesville and Mobile, AL. but about the same as Williamsburg and Lancaster. No other riders were spotted today.

Today’s ride statistics:

  • miles 26.36
  • riding time 1:49:16
  • average pace 4:09 min/mile
  • average speed 14.5 mph
  • max speed 20.5 mph
  • average cadence 77.4 rpm
  • max cadence 106 rpm
  • climb 186 ft., descend 196 ft., max elevation 117 ft.
  • September miles 250.25
  • YTD miles 3950.21 ( this is adjusted from what I was reporting while I was on the road due to SportTracks calculating different from Garmin Connect online)
